I find the following in my notes - possibly of incidental interest:

Carolan's Concerto occasionally also appears as Mrs. Power or Mrs. Poer, and erroneously as Fanny Power.

is occasionally found as Mrs. Trench and also (erroneously) called Planxty Fanny Power.
Fanny (Frances) Power was the daughter of David Power of Coorheen. She married Richard Trench of Garbally in 1732.

I have a facsimile of O'Neill's Music of Ireland as published in 1903. In a section labelled "O'Carolan's Compostions" it has Planxty Fanny Powers, in 6/8 time and in the key of A. I have usually heard this tune played rather slowly and gracefully, so that it becomes a waltz. It's popular at sessions and renfests.

O'Carolan's Concerto is there too, under that name. It's a piece in 2/3 time, key of D. It's usually played fast and sounds baroque, similar to the music of Vivaldi and Bach.

To me Carolan always seems to belong more to the 18th century classical mainstream than to any specifically Irish tradition. Not that that's a putdown in any way - I love to both play and listen to his stuff. Just that he seems closer to J S Bach than to The Rakes Of Mallow.

Several of my references indicate that Carolan was criticized in his own time as being too "modern." The implication was that he was too much influenced by "modern" orchestras and "European" composers.

One must also recall, though, that Niel and Nathaniel Gow - about as trad as we know? - also lead their town orchestras.

Apparently the Concerto was composed in reply to an Italian musician in Dublin. It seems to be a variation on a theme to one of Vivaldi's (can't remember which at the moment). There are several places in the tune where you can play the original Vivaldi as a sort of counterpoint.
