Help: Queen Mum procession - name that tune?

Watching the procession of the the Queens Mums coffin to Westminster house on the TV and I heard a bagpipe tune that was very familiar but I could not place it. Sorry to you Scots about being an ignorant Sassenach and all that but it's driving me potty!

It was, as you would expect, in slow march time, but the tune had similarities to 'Bonny Dundee'. Can anyone put me out of my misery?

Possibly "The Dark Island" said to be the Queen Mother's favourite lament?

That's it - Also, expect the Black Watch at some point to play "HM Queen Elizabeth" tomorrow - a tune written in her honour some 60 years ago.

it was the dark island because i remember watching it and they said "now a scottish lament, the dark island played by so and so..." but i always thought it was a waltz.

But it's a great free show, even if we are paying for it. It's a symbolic way of marking the passing of the century, and a lot better organised than that millenium celebration ever was. And a tribute to a bloody great generation.

I know the Dark Isle - I'm pretty sure it wersent that! I don't know Flowers of the Forest that well but some strange instinct tells me it wersent that either...

The tune was definitely like Bonny Dundee but slowed to 1/2 pace.

The Dark Island was originally titled "Dr. Mackay's Farewell to Creagorry." (Tune would be more popular with folkies if it weren't so popular.)

It's been discussed somewhat in uk.music.folk. What they've said was the tune was the Dark Island, her favorite lament, and it was played by her personal piper as the coffin left Windsor.

This was well after that - as the coffin was getting closer to Westminster House from what I could see.

The first part (the A part for you folkie types) of Flowers of the Forest could fit that description. Having said that, there are plenty of slow marches and airs to choose from.

(Up until it got played to death by massed (pipe) bands at Scottish games in Ontario and Michigan, Road to the Isles was one of my favorites, close second was The Mist Covered Mountains.)

One of the tunes played was 'My Home@ - that might be the one you heard.

The 2 tunes played by the massed pipes & drums (120 pipers, 76 drummers) were "My Home" and "The Mist Covered Mountains of Home".

Jonah has it right... and the tune played by the pipes and drums after the funeral was Oft in the Stilly Night.
