is there a way of making mudcat my home page?

Yes, just set it in the Tools/Internet options if you are using IE. There's a similar setting in most other browsers.

If you have a dial-up connection, though, it can be a bit irritating if every time you start the broswer it hunts for 10 seconds or so and then says the page can't be found.

You can set any web page you like as your home page, or if it is difficult to set it because of delays described above, just make yourself a desktop shortcut link. Click it and it will take you straight to the discussion forum.

To make a desktop icon using IE, simply bring up the main page you want to link to. Using your mouse, right click anywhere on the page that isn't a link. In the resulting menu you'll find the option "Create Shortcut." Click on it. When it appears on your desktop, you'll find it complete with the blue Mudcat logo.

An alternative approach is to make your own home page, store it on your computer and point to that. I have very quickly cobbled an example together to give an idea of what can be done. I have placed it here.

The Mudcat supersearch doesn't work on this example as I can't get into the search on Mudcat to view the form and get the details. I think the Google search should work - more or less a straight copy and paste from their site.

OK, supersearch is back and I may have that bit working.

The point's I'm trying to address are:

1. The odds are when you log on to the internet, you probably are going to use one of a few regular sites. So they are there.

2. Sites such as Mudcat have problems that can make just choosing www.mudcat.org the home page annoying - sometimes you need ragtime or loki because the others aren't working. This "home page" has links to shory, loki and ragtime.

3. Sometimes your reason for a visit to a site is just to search. In this example, I think I can now directly search from Google, The Mudcat Supersearch (forum, dt or both - an option not availible from the thread page here) and from John Chambers search engine.

4. As it's local, assuming you are dialing up, there is no dialup until you choose where to go.

The "hard part" is the forms but mostly all you need to do is just copy and paste between (and including) FORM tags in the HTML. Where it may say something like 'Form action="/newpost.html"', just remember that you are running on your own desktop so, if the site you were using was Mudcat and that is the thing, change "action=" to include the full URL, e.g. 'action="http://www.mudcat.org/newpost.html"' and your'e in business.

I should just add - giving credit where it's due, etc. that the idea (although not as a homepage in the example given) came to me from Jeff/ Pene Azul here.

I just take ideas and modify to suit my needs - hope others do the same.

As Jon said, best to make your own homepage, with links to the various Mudcat servers on it. Including the help forum. (And that homepage could be either in your computer, or up on the web somewhere, which is better if you might want to open it from another computer.)

FYI: Not all browsers allow you to change your home page. I used to subscribe to CompuServe as my ISP, and CompuServe provides its own browser. Apparently you HAVE to use CompuServe's browser to make the connection to CompuServe's modems. (If there's a way to get another browser to establish the connection, I never learned what it was.) Then you automatically get CompuServe's home page. They want you to see THEIR advertising, I guess. And I searched diligently for a way to change this, but none was provided.

After the connection was established, you could switch to a different browser. Once in a while I used Netscape, because CompuServe was unable to download large images like the broadsides at the Bodleian Library.

I understand America Online works the same way.

By the way, the only reason we had CompuServe was because my wife bought this computer, and she got it cheap as a package deal if she promised to subscribe to CompuServe for 2 years. There was a huge penalty for early withdrawal, so to speak. Even though the 2 years isn't up yet, we have already switched to another service so we could get DSL. Once again, DSL came as a package deal with MSN as our ISP. Now I use Internet Explorer as my browser. We are still paying for CompuServe although we never use it, except to receive email. And we will be phasing that out as we notify friends of our new email address.

By the way, if anybody is considering DSL, or any other kind of upgrade, I suggest you research it thoroughly. There are a lot of options the salesmen don't tell you about. Such as, that I could have used the new DSL line along with CompuServe or many other ISPs.

Another option for your regular sites (if you are using Internet Explorer)is to use the 'links' section of the favorites menu.

This allows you to set up a customised toolbar. You can drag the toolbar up to make use of the blank grey space to the right of the help menu.
