An immeasurable loss to North Kerry & Irish life as a whole. I remember watching a documentary on RTÉ a couple of years ago. he had awonderful quote about the importance of being a writer. I would love if anyone had that quote as I can't remember it.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam

Good writer, bigot when it comes to Pavees. All is forgiven in death. Holding him in the light. Larry

So glad to have met you - I forgive you for taking the piss! (was taking a picture of the pub early one morning when passing through for my 'scrapbook' when I was aware, through the viewfinder, of someone ostentatiously 'posing' on the doorstep. What better way to start an unexpected meeting?

A fine man and one of my favorite modern Irish authors and playwrights. Fare thee well, John, and many, many thanks for the thoughtful laughter you sowed along your path.

John B, was a wonderful story teller, there was a tribute to him to-night on RTE TV. God rest his Soul. Ard Mhacha.

The world will be a little poorer from now on. John helped fight the tyrany of the Irish Catholic Church and helped drag Ireland screaming and kicking into the 20th. century. A great writer and a great man. Ill drink a pint to his memory. Slan leat.

Never to speak ill of the dead (w/a wink to Larry). It is no longer up to us to forgive him, but I agree he was a bit of a right winger. A man who won't be sorely missed by many of us, may he RIP.

I suspect his stature will grow now that he's dead. Some of the plays and novels are classics on a world scale (what about "The Field" - a classic in every sense of the word?).

A wonderfully human writer, with warmth and understanding even for the unpleasant characters about whom he manages to write with sympathy by giving some insight into what made them what they are.
