The Gospel Messengers, lead by our own Jerry Rasmussen, wowed them at the Folklore Society of Greater Washington concert on Saturday night. The Washington Ethical Society Hall rang with beautiful gospel harmony. The quartet, hailing from in and around Stanford Connecticut, delivered traditional gospel tunes and a sprinkling of Jerry's originals, all driven by a distinctive fingerstyle electric guitar. Beautiful.

I've heard a tape of the Gospel Messengers and can vouch for their quality but, being in the U.K., can't unfortunately get to hear them live. I'm sure that they are a real treat when you're in the same room. I know that Jerry is working on a C.D. and, from what he tells me, most of it is recorded in one take to keep the vitality of the voices working together and maintain that "live" feel. I'm looking forward to it!

I don't know of anything that lifts me up and leaves me there, like old-time black gospel music (except my grandchildren). Jerry & friends are the "real thing", 2002-style. Way to go, and thank you for being you.
