This is a subject worthy of discussion. As a result of last weeks Oakley barefoot-in-shorts scandal at South Ferriby, Mr. Watson and I decided to come out in sympathy on Saturday night at Durty Nellies. We turned up looking like a pair of beach bums just for him. Mr. Watson was a little unsure...'is there any chance we will end up looking a pair of twats, tonight, Pete?' to which my reply was...'absolutely'.

However, the full hilarity of the evening was only realised when we arrived at said venue, to see brother Oakley waiting for us in the car park. Fully suited. I mean, the man looked absolutely immaculate. Dark grey suit (buttoned up), crisp white shirt, tie, and highly polished black shoes. Like he was about to enter a high-powered business meeting. We nearly died laughing.

Needless to say, Ossonflags did not look amused when we all walked in...two beach bums and a solicitor...to play in front of a packed saturday audience..!!! Nobody quite knew what to make of us. Oakleys dedication to the cause was truly awesome..he played all night, refusing to give in, and still had his buttons done up at 11.30!!! This despite high temperature and almost unbearable humidity. Not only this, but Oakley played blindingly well all night. He should wear a suit all night. Many thanks for making my evening so entertaining, and musical, Oakley!!

In fact, being in the vicinity of brother Oakley this weekend has been adviseable for anyone wishing to participate in his unique brand of insanity, as those who witnessed the Purple Helmets Display Team in action yesterday will testify to.

I have never seen anything so funny as Oakley appearing through a cloud of prematurely discharged smoke and hurtling down the length of Hengate trailing Greg and the occasional puff of blue smoke, straight through the red light, to the cheers and clapping of the raggle taggle session crowd who had assembled on the pavement to witness the event. The man is truly insane.

I read elsewhere that September's display is already in it's planning stages, and is going to be something quite spectacular, so anyone wishing to view the now world famous Purple Helmets Display Team needs to be at my next Nellies Session, which takes place from 2pm on Sunday 1st September.

As one eye witness of the Purple Helmets cycle display team's daredevil dash through Hengate described the display as "Awsome truly awesum, I've never seen anything so premature in my life!" There were think clouds of blue smoke, some really perplexed looking car drives and the unbelivable blur as the two mad cyclists dashed through the street, one shouting about having had a premature (smoke) ejaculation.

It was the funnies thing I've seen in ages Keep it up boys

DeanMeister, one the of recurrent threads in our text messaging has been "What the hell is going on at the moment?" The events of the weekend indicate that I am really no nearer to figuring this out and am pleased to say that reality is slipping nicely away. I really enjoyed the gig, and I guess my playing was a lot more fluent after the 4 hours rehearsal at the busking competition in Beverley.

I explained to the other Purple Helmet on the ride to Nelly's yesterday, that I have a job interview on Tuesday and needed the suit to be in a passable condition. To prevent it looking like a piece of tissue paper, I removed the now-soaked jacket and trousers in Durty Nellies car park, folded then neatly on the back seat, removed the tie and wet shirt and drove home practically naked. I was getting the instruments and the wet clothing into the house, when the security light came on and Mrs Drinkall from no 21 bid me a cheery good evening as she was returning from emptying her dog in the back garden. As if it were entirely normal. Which I suppose it is.

As for the display, I chuckled when I imagined Doug ashen - faced in the crowd, writing furiously in a reporters' notebook to support yet another anti-BS thread. Another two pints and I would have agreed with Gary's suggestion to do it starkers and get arrested. It really was that close!

I regret running out of steam in the afternoon, and abandoning my plan to go to Wooton, leaving Gary to tear arse home and prepare my place behind the settee. But one just can't do everything.

A belter of a weekend, a belter.

I can't tell you about Les's prize, but dodgy bird was indeed there in all her glory, John. It would seem you have missed your chance. She seemed rather taken with the Humberside Police Special Whistle Squadron, and the Purple Helmet Display Team had her entranced. I fear you have some catching up to do. 9.

You know, the more I read about these goings on the sorrier I am that I was not there to witness it. It sounds like only a guest appearance by the Great S**tner could have improved upon the festivities.

I have only 2 questions:

Were there any parrots?

What are you people on?

Hi Dodgy! jOhn, you appear to be attracting a lot of profiteers who must have got wind of the fact that you will inherit a small fortune when Brian is eventually poisoned by your feet. Transo, Bircleys, The Inland Revenue, The NHS all seem determined to get their slippery hands around the jOhn from Hull wonga. And milk you dry.

In an earlier thread, I alluded to the fact that my Hiace van in blue should have been the subject of a cult movie. Now, jOhn, I want you to promise that if you have any plans to comment about this, you will be extra-careful about the spelling of the word "cult". For all our sakes9.

John, I to suffer from the incredible shrinking trouser syndrome, it is caused, Ibelieve ,from drinking ginormouse amounts of bear likewise amount curries.

Therefore I shall give you the name of my tailor:

www.dickies4less.cm

said dugaree garments were imported from america via the internet.

What atracted me to above garment was the advert "Dickies, the only trousers that make your belly part of the garment" aha!! I said, those are the very fellows for me and ordered two pairs.

I hope you tske to wearing them,we might start a new trend.

I have just blushed hotly, Interested Spectator. It was a really good evening. Didn't we have a chat later in the evening?

Don't trouble yourself with the Purple Helmets just yet. One thing at a time, with this particular drivel-fest.

Whose round is it Banjo-Flower? If I'd have known you were so generous I'd have let you buy me a pint well before now. How selfish of me.

In between visits to the toilet, I am trying to think of intelligent questions to ask tomorrow, but all I can think of is "What are the hours?" and "What's the holidays like?" Any suggestions anyone?

I was expressly forbidden to cook this evening. I had planned a mashed garlic, sprout and onion vindaloo washed down with cheap lemonade and home made sherbet. Instead, I chose to play it safe: Eight stale scotch eggs, two kilos of dried apricots and a generous handful of suet. Oh, and a chinese takeaway (an unwanted gift). All washed down with a fine bottle or two of 6 year old Beaujolais Nivea. And a digestive; two slugs of home made pea and ham Hock - a wine kit with a bit of added body curtesy of Campbells. I think the spelling might have gone awry then, but I have already pressed the submit button. Nerves have a terrible effect on the guts, don't you think?

I have just been informed that the present Mrs. DeanMeister is indeed engaged tomorrow evening, so it appears unlikely that I will make an appearance at the Hase. This is a disappointment, as I have spent all evening building a special harness to facilitate the carriage of the newly acquired Double Bass on the back of my motorcycle, with a view to committing a violent act on Sue the Piper.

I woz also9 planning on giving jOhn9 a slap, and buying Doug a pint. Oh, and possibly playing a little music. I may appear, as in a vision, later in the proceedings, wearing leather jhodpurs and a purple (ish) helmet. Depending on wether 'er indoors has managed to escape from the clutches of a load of loony women (Dodgy Bird included) at one of these Anne Summers thingies. What happens at them, anyway? Is it a sort of make up party? Should I go to see what it's all about? Can anyone help me???? jOhn9?

Lady from Hull, Gary and I have some technical matters to attend to with the smoke generation, but the next outing will be to hijack the session in Nellies on September 1st with (all being well) a naked display. I can't believe I've committed myself to that, but there you go. The next Durty Nellies gig is on the 30th August. It would be great to see you and Interested Spectator there.

Claire Frisby is the famous woman off the telly. More than that I don't know, because Rugby Cement's South Ferriby plant obscures the signal from Yorkshire Television's transmitter, condemning us to watch that dratted Geordievision, despite the fact that goings on in North Shields or Cockermouth, as interesting as they must be, are of little relevance to us in North Lincs. The Frisby woman is a local leg end. But not here.

I find that Shetlands are quite nice when you mix and match 'em, as long as you make sure that the striped ones 'ave their 'ats on straight and the purple ones aren't all twitchy, if you know what I mean. I once attended such an event in Pokingworth on Tyne and 'ad a really smashing time. The best part was when the announcer got his filberts stuck partway down and copped a thrown 'orseshoe right in the Adam's apple. You should have 'eard him curse! Even me parrot would've been embarrassed, and covered 'is little ears wiv 'is wings, 'e would've. Bloody marvelous it was!

Hey, interested spectator, I believe I have finally placed you. It came to me in blindig flash of inspiration at about 2am this morning. David described you as long dark hair, white dress and impossibly brown eyes and I still did not get it. Had he mentioned that you were also fiendishly attractive, drinking champagne, and always do the Fields of Athenry dance then I would have placed you immediately!! Nice to pick up so many insights into the art culture of those far across the water.....from Lincolnshire. Seriously, a great thread keep it coming!!!!! Would suggest that for Shantyfest visitors like us down south, you have a word or two with Peter and close the Saturday quayside session with a Purple Helmets display.......on the other hand the floating stage might not be......well...you know....stable enough?????????

I'll let you down now, Fenman. Sadly, the 'Helmets were ill-equipped to be exposed to the media, and the usual tale of booze, drugs, groupies, even excess has taken a swift and heavy toll.

It isn't the end of the line for us, but we are having to retreat to a sanatorium in Sligo for the duration of the Hull Shantyfest, to discuss artistic differences. Also, it's a bit like Mudcat, when occasionally someone spoils the BS by bringing in a musical dimension, as my partner, husband and manager will be involved recording home-made tunes with the Potato Orchestra, another one of his tax-evading identities.

Have no fear, the 'Helmets will be back in September, with pyrotechnics that actually work, acres of naked flesh, a study of sobriety after the heady self-destruction of premature adulation.

Gary

Thats sad news Gary, and there was me looking for that extra culture dimension at shantyfest this year. So sad to hear of the worn out / worn down state at present, obviously copious quantity R & R needed urgentest if life threatening state is to be avoided. I am advised that sudden habit changes are precipitously counter productive so best interests is not to emulate trappist monks tooooooo suddenly. Suggest (not originally) regular dosing with sligojuice is a cure for almost everything........enjoy

Oh Sireen, my dear, to use the 'Ull vernacular, we are gutted. jOhn and Brian's business launch should be some consolation, surely? You'll just have to come back on a Nellie's Sunday, preferably the October, when the 'Helmets are planning their greatest outrage to date. We have acquired explosives, but my quartermaster says they're sweating and unstable, and will fit in nicely. We have also discussed the practicalities of a feminine shave. I'm sure that nice Linda would welcome that harmony stuff whot you do good, and we can enjoy your thr'upenny bits 9Yours and Alanwww.'s, that is).

Jesus Gary, the test firing was awsome. Is it appropriate to Hengate? The nudity is, but it is the bangs that make me wonder. Sireen, there is of course only one drawback to recording with the potato orchestra with both wifes in a supporting role, that is missing the power lunch. October at Nelly's perhaps?

It's the 1971 Morris Minor Traveller heading towards Anglesey on Sunday, with the bloke normally dressed as the bloke from Kiss, and my other wife. I will have the report on your desk within hours of my return. Enjoy the power lunch, spare a thought for Ms Penelope Rutledge, and remember to drivel, Sireen, with pace, grace and a fluid sense of balance.
