Subject: RE: looking for folkies From: bradfordian Date: 28 Aug 02 - 11:51 AM Well I'm 24 x 2. (and a little bit) You could share me......and we could go to Fylde.Folk Festival........if only I was in the West Mids.......and wasn't working....Oh lack-a-day. Well, Bev & Laura, tell us 'catters a bit more. Do you sing or play an instrument, Do you get to any particular folk clubs? |

Subject: RE: looking for folkies From: Kate Date: 28 Aug 02 - 06:07 PM I'm 23 and used to be in the East Midlands. Now down in the big smoke. I like a wide range of folk music, both vocalists and musicians. I enjoy pretty informal folk sessions, but also go to concerts. I want to start making it to more festivals as I normaly only go to Sidmouth and occassionaly Wadebridge and Lowender Peran. |
|
Subject: RE: looking for folkies From: Kate Date: 28 Aug 02 - 06:26 PM I posted this message before I'd finished - It's been a long day! Meant to carry on saying: So which artists are you most into? Do you make it to many festivals? Would be great to know some other folkies. |

Subject: RE: looking for folkies From: Beverley Date: 29 Aug 02 - 06:30 AM Well Im Beverley and Im trying to learn to play the Bodhran and love singing. I love Emily Slade, Pete Morton, Jo Freya,Tarras, Suntrap, Kate Rusby, Nancy Kerr and James Fagin, Irish stuff, and trad English! I love festivals this year went to Bridgnorth, and warwick, cos poor but me and Laura are going to Bromyard too!!Laura is learning the melodian, and plays the recorder and tin whistle and does Irish dancing. She loves Bedlam, the Pack, Andy Cutting and Nigel Eaton, Kate Rusby, Eliza Carthy and Irish and English trad stuff!!! We are a bit stuck cos we are both very shy and though been doing festivals etc for ages dont have the courage to talk to people!!! All together now Ahhhh!!!

|
Subject: RE: looking for folkies From: smallpiper Date: 29 Aug 02 - 08:08 AM Well now you've made a start and you can't be shy and play the Bodhran - cos you'll bare the brunt of too many jokes for a kick off. So start talking and get out and play girl! |
|
Subject: RE: looking for folkies From: Noreen Date: 29 Aug 02 - 01:53 PM Beverley, there will be several Mudcatters at Bromyard, some of us singing with the Shellback Chorus (and probably singing in the Hop Pole when not performing). I'll be wearing my Mudcat t-shirt at times, and my Mudcat badge all the time (well, almost) so please come and say hello; it would be lovely to meet the two of you. (I was very shy too before I met my first mudcatters... *grin*) I was at Bridgnorth and Warwick too; weren't they wonderful?! Noreen |

Subject: RE: looking for folkies From: janey Date: 29 Aug 02 - 03:56 PM You don't have to be rich to do the festivals! If you want tickets it seems fairly easy (from where I'm sitting) to get yerself a job doing the stewarding and "earn" yourself a free ticket. Have a look at the Froots Festival Guide website and ring the organisers. Alternatively, why not choose your festivals and just do the fringe side of things. If you can get up to Scotland in October (10th ish) then try and make Innerleithen Both Sides of the Tweed Festival. Last year it was a brilliant weekend and only cost three packets of chips, two bacon butties and a few beers. If you really are shy then I recommend you yourselves a border collie dog and wear a cowboy hat; you'll find that no one can resist commenting on either the hat or the dog. Once they comment on the dog/hat, you can amaze them with your wit/repartee/whistleplaying/bodhraning and you never be lonely again! It works for me! |

Subject: RE: looking for folkies From: Beverley Date: 29 Aug 02 - 04:36 PM Hello all, Well we are much cheered by all your replies and would love to meet up at festivals! We are going to Bromyard this year saturday and sunday, so if anyone wants to meet up email us on matthewsbeverley@aol.com! We want to meet people our age cos all folkies seem to be 40+ or below 10!! I will bring my Bodhran, dont know about Laura, but are both real beginners but will practice before, or just to hang out!! We are also trying to find some sessions, and concerts around mids, especially west mids cos we dont drive, so if anyone again wants to have a night out let us know cos we would love toxxx |

Subject: RE: looking for folkies From: Mr Red Date: 29 Aug 02 - 05:26 PM Well I have to say from a perspective of more than mid twenties that the range of ages is pretty good at festivals but I don't count the years and the numbers. It does help if you sing or play an instrument. Bodhrans do qualify. **BG** Say hello at Bromyard, you will spot me by the red bodhrans. |
|
Subject: RE: looking for folkies From: Beverley Date: 29 Aug 02 - 05:35 PM well we do both sing and play though we are struggling we are getting there its hard to learn alone though so should be ok, how we will spot you I dont know but if you email I can send photos from my new posh webcam!!! OOOH I hear you all cry!!! Beverleyxxx |

Subject: RE: looking for folkies From: michaelr Date: 30 Aug 02 - 06:04 PM Welcome to the Mudcat, Beverley! I applaud your efforts to learn trad music and become part of the folk scene. In a way, I envy you living in England, as there seem to be a lot of festivals, and the distances aren't nearly as vast as here in the U.S. As to folkies being 40+, that's certainly true for many Mudcatters... and then some! Cheers, Michael |
|
Subject: RE: looking for folkies From: Beverley Date: 31 Aug 02 - 05:51 AM I know what you mean about the folk population being mainly 40+ which is cool, but me and Laura see loads of people our age at festivals, but are too scared to go up and strike up a conversation as they all seem to be in big groups! So we had to find a way to make friends that would make it a bit easier! Pathetic I know, but resourceful!! |
|
Subject: RE: looking for folkies From: smallpiper Date: 31 Aug 02 - 06:46 AM Nothing pathetic about it girl and just think all these younsters will be 40 plus eventually so make friends with the oldies and they'll introduce you to the younger ones. Get you an in so to speak. Thats being resourceful. |

Subject: RE: looking for folkies From: awig Date: 31 Aug 02 - 07:06 AM West Midlands..... I don't know if this will help, not knowing where in the W.Mids you are. There is an excellent session in Coventry every Tuesday night at the Four Provinces (known as the Four P's), on the corner of Allesly Old Road and Lord Street just past Spon End. Since it's in an Irish club and Ceoltas meet upstairs on a Tuesday, it's a mostly Irish session, but all sorts of things have crept at times in including African drummers, Spanish singers, Didgeridoos (spelling?), classical guitarists etc. There's a liberal dose of English and continental music thrown in as well as plenty of bodhran's and a wide age range so you wouldn't feel out of place. It's the highlight of my week :-) Andrew. |

Subject: RE: looking for folkies From: Mart Date: 31 Aug 02 - 07:11 AM Are you on the bigsession mailing list? That has a lot of young folky types on it (most of the pack amongst others). Look on: http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/bigsession/ or mail bigsession-subscribe@yahoogroups.co.uk to join > no nutters please Uh oh - that could be a bit of a problem, though... |
