About 10 years ago a friend gave me 5 tapes of a poet I had never previously heard of, Stan Rogers- well it took my breath away and still takes my breath away every time I play one of his songs.
The thing is, the tapes are now almost completely worn out- I would love to buy a complete set of Stans music it deserves to be re-released and played to everyone who ever had a soul.- I live near Sydney Australia and as well as being a musician and ex fisherman like to play around in old boats-'one lungers" according to Stan. You might imagine how his songs resonate with me. Any Stan fans are very welcome to correspond.

Readings in Lygon Street Melbourne, used to keep Rogers' CDs in stock. It was where I got my set years ago. They may still keep them as people are discovering him all the time. If you want to buy via the Net, CDNow seems to have most of them.

Welcome Mike.

Do yourself the favour of joining Mudcat, as there are alot of Stan Rogers fan's here, myself included. Curly Boy Stubbs(aka Paul Mills) has a membership here, although I'm not sure the last time he posted. Rick Fielding (a damn great singer in his own right) might know what's up with Paul.

One of the best ideas to get Stan's music, would be to contact Ariel directly.

Hi Mike. Welcome to the club!

A one-lunger is not a boat as such, its a particularly primitive outboard motor, which has the interesting characteristic that when you yank on the cord and start it, you have no idea (if it starts) which direction the prop is going to spin in. Much nautical hilarity can ensue...

Anyway, all Stan's recordings should still be available.

Hey Michael,

I've a friend from Sydney, Australia who plays the guitar and loves Stan Rogers. He bought my Stan Rogers songbook at a gathering in Louisiana. Look for "Waterlogged" on the Acoustic Guitar Magazine discussion forums if you want to meet him.

Willie, a cape islander would be too large for an outboard motor, I think Stan was refering to a motorboat with a one cylinder inboard motor. "One lunger" being one cylinder. Our family had such a boat when I was growing up. Some of my fondest memories were of fishing in that boat.

   "Make and Break Harbour" is very special to me because about the time it was written I was traveling throughout Newfoundland and I saw the song unfolding. Abandoned boats and gear and the draggers raping the fishing grounds. Stan was not only a poet but he was a fine comentator who really touched our hearts in the Atlantic provinces of Canada.

A "One Lunger" is in fact a single cylinder motor that was particularly suited to open boats. The engine has a flywheel that is grabbed and spun to start the engine. They'd do a steady 760 rpms and do 6 knots against a 5 knot tide and never show an inch of strain.

The ignition used was called a "Make and Break" ignition because of its simplicity. As the flywheel turn the electrical contacts would "make" to create the timeing for the spark and "break" once the spark plug fired.

Make and Break Harbor is a favorite song of mine. Especially since a spent some time in the fishing boat industry.

Hi and thanks to everyone for the information about one lungers- I didn't mean to sound ignorant about them. actually, I live on a small island an hour north of Sydney and am involved in restoring old work boats including 'one lungers- or Kickers as we sometimes know them here. The 'Putt-Putt motors are wonderful old beasties. we have four main types Chapman and Blaxland engines are two strokers which are started by wrapping a leather belt around the exposed "bacon slicer" flywheel. Simplex engines are a simple matter of rolling the flywheel to TDc, a little thumb over the Amal updraft inlet to suck some fuel through, then gently roll the flywheel away from you- away you go.
The rather more sporty Olds motors are still made in Queensland and are started by crank.
I do love the exposed valve gear and conrod of the water pump going in and out at a very visible speed.
We took a couple of the boats around to Ettalong a two weeks ago where we took part in a concourse d' elegance. there were several hundred beautiful old wooden boats taking part- what a day.

I guess I had make& breaks and one-lungers mixed up...but I know from Make and Break Harbour, I played it last night.

Then I dropped my guitar and broke it...but that's another sad story.

I will get onto it straight away. There seems to be an abundance of Canadians in Sydney- They keep turning up in my life this year- do they breed like normal people or do they divide and multiply?
They do play some good music though don't they.

From Coffee House to Concert Hall is not a live album per se. It is a compilation of previously unreleased songs, many are live but there is a helping of studio, TV and Radio cuts as well.

I have a sneaking suspicion that if Stan had lived longer, "Coffee House to Concert Hall" might not have been released. A lot of the stuff on it is not up to his usual high standard.

I'm glad it was released. It is a treasure and although some of the cuts are rough they give a broad sample of his progress as a writer and performer. Some of the gold which whould have been left on the studio floor has been preserved in this instance.
