Pick any three chords and ya' can play all Dr. Hooks songs. Jus' funnin'. But really, they're not too complicated. I just pick a hey I can do 'em in and let it rip. As fir range, now that's different story. If yer trying to sing 'em as one person, good luck. They danged things will work ya'.

My favorite is "Carry me, Carie". Seems I do it in E, as I recollect, but gotta satrt off real low to hang with the song thru the chorus. That's the problem with those guys. Too much range so you're gonna most likely have to rearrange the songs to where you're comfy.

When you look for stuff like this, try spelling out doctor, try another search with the abbreviation, or try just doing Hook+chords and see what you get.

A lot of these were written by Shel Silverstein, so try that too.

Man, you've made me want to dig my old vinyl out now!

Good luck and happy hunting!

Here's a good site for Shel Silverstein lyrics - which, as has been pointed out, include a lot of the best-known Dr. Hook songs.

Peter.

Anyone know what happened to Dennis Locorriere from the band? He had/has a great voice, I hope he's eating well.

He's still touring, singing the old songs. He certainly does (still) have a great voice, kind of rough and warm at the same time -- a real heartbreaker. I remember seeing them live once (Hammersmith Odeon, late seventies) and they came on like a bunch of loons, stoned out of their gourds, just messing around, then as soon as the first song started (sound of fingers snapping) they were right in there, tight harmonies, bang on the money. Brilliant songs too, especially the Silverstein ones. I'm gonna dig 'em out too. I particularly want to hear 'Last Morning' again -- I love that song!

Years ago I remember reading about a show they did in Denmark. They came on stage as their own lead-in band.Dressed differently, playing regular rock and roll and using a stage name. They were booed off the stage. The crowd was there to see Dr. Hook and not anone else.

They changed clothes and came back on as themselves to standing ovations.

Later on when the audience found out what they had done, they were not amused.

rangeroger, I've never heard that before. What a perverse, but great thing to do! Figures that Dr. Hook would do it!

They tickled the dookey outta me with their disco, "When you're in love with a beautiful woman". I loved "Sylvia's Mother" and "Love you a Little bit More".

Hilarious guys, wonderful speed-freaks to whom I could relate!

I can't think about them without thinking about the wonderful Shel Silverstein. There won't be another like him.

And, guess what, yes, you've guessed it! A Doctor Hook site!

It's wonderful what you can find when you look.

Alan

PS On the Shel Silverstein site, have a look at "The Father of the Boy named Sue". Hardly PC, but oh, so funny!!!

Lanfranc, like I said when I opened this thread I can find sites with the lyrics, both Dr Hook and Shel Silverstein sites, but I've yet to find one with chords. Sarcastic remarks about ability to find sites are not particularly helpful to a genuine request for assistance.

Speaking of Denmark -- I saw Dr Hook there at the Roskilde festival in... hmmm, it must have been 1974 or so... Towards the end of their set the rest of the band left the stage, leaving Dennis L. to do a solo "Sylvia's Mother". When he was done, the others came back out STARK NAKED!

Dennis looked around him in surprise, then shrugged and dropped trou himself... and the band finished their set and encore in the buff!

Only in Denmark could you get away with that without being arrested! One of the fondest memories I have of my misspent youth.

Cheers,
Michael

Raggytash,

Believe it or not, I was not intending sarcasm, merely expressing my delight at finding those two sites.

By the time I'd read down to the point where I posted, and diverted to Google to do a search, I'd lost track of the point that it was the chords you wanted.

Anyway, I'm grateful to this thread for the dates of Dennis' tour, and I will do my damnedest to get to at least one gig, possibly Chatham.

Alan

Lanfranc, I except your explanation Thanks for that. I watched Dr Hook several times in the late 70's early eighties. They were always brilliant on stage, note perfect. On one occasion in Mnachester (Apollo I think) a woman brought her daughter, about 12, to stand in front of the stage where she could take her photograph with the band in the background. Denis stopped the band, gathered them all the to front of the stage had the little girl lifted onto the stage so her mother could take photographs of her with the band around her. Absolutely brilliant, he then took the camera and photographed the audience as well! Great night.
Have to giive those tour dates a good lookover.

Great stories, guys!

Wish I had the chance to have seen them live back in their heyday. Good to know they were having fun and enjoying the moment instead of taking themselves too seriously as (harumph harumph) "ARTISTES!" (And that's no slam on their music at all... good stuff!)

Yeah, love with a beautiful woman was a radio highlight of the time, in a time when frankly radio was already losing it's appeal to me.
