Subject: Lyr Req: Need help identifying a song From: GUEST Date: 20 Jan 03 - 04:35 PM Hey all, I figure this is the best place to ask for help. My Mom is trying to find a song that she used to listen to when she was younger. She thinks it is called 'Girl In The Tavern' but isn't sure. She's also not sure if it is actually a Newfoundland song, or just something she might have heard on the radio. She's given me the following lyrics to work with, but I haven't come up with anything yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated. One night as I sat in a tavern And drank while the wine flowed so free A girl came and stood in the doorway She was a picture of beauty to see I went and placed a hand on her shoulder And asked if she liked to sit down She said "I'm just here for my husband I've looked for him all over town Since he's not here I'll be leaving But thank you kind sir just the same It seems that he's out with another And it looks like he cheated again" As she turned and walked out of the doorway I thought what a fool he must be To be out sleeping around with another When he had one so true as I could |

Subject: Lyr Add: GIRL IN A TAVERN (Smiling Bill McCormack) From: GUEST,Newfiegirl Date: 21 Jan 03 - 08:50 AM Your mom was right; the song is called "A GIRL IN A TAVERN." I don't think it is a Newfoundland song. I also remember hearing it when I was growing up. God bless. One night as I sat in a tavern, And drank while the wine flowed so free, A girl came and stood in the doorway. She was a picture of beauty to see. Her face was the image of heaven, Her eyes like the stars up above. I could tell by the way she was smiling That her heart was made only for love. I went laid my hand on her shoulder, And asked if she'd like to sit down. She said, "I'm just here for my husband. I've looked for him all over town. "Oh, seeing he's not here, I'll be leaving, So I thank you, kind sir, just the same. I think that he's out with another, And it looks like he's cheated again." As she turned and stepped out of the doorway, Oh, I thought what a fool he must be, To be slipping around with another, When he has one that's true I could see. Now I thought I had learned a great lesson, So I drank up and then went straight home, 'Cause I love the girl that I married, And from her I never will roam. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: A Girl in a Tavern / ...the Tavern From: GUEST,Billy Hater Date: 29 Dec 18 - 01:51 AM Smiling Bill is from St. Charles P.E.I. but moved to Hopefield and lived literally a couple feet off the County Line Road deviding Kings and Queens counties. I know this because I am first cousins with his daughter in-law Lorraine. His son (also named Billy)and I, have played in many bands together over the years and remain fairly close. He and his own son Willian both share Smiling Bill's great talent and passion for music. Sadly, Smiling Bill passed away on Dec. 23, 2018 in Hamilton Ontario. |
