Hey all,

I figure this is the best place to ask for help. My Mom is trying to find a song that she used to listen to when she was younger. She thinks it is called 'Girl In The Tavern' but isn't sure. She's also not sure if it is actually a Newfoundland song, or just something she might have heard on the radio. She's given me the following lyrics to work with, but I haven't come up with anything yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

One night as I sat in a tavern
And drank while the wine flowed so free
A girl came and stood in the doorway
She was a picture of beauty to see
I went and placed a hand on her shoulder
And asked if she liked to sit down

I've looked for him all over town

I have heard a very similiar song at bluegrass festivals, although I think it was more of a "honky-tonk" song. Did you try Cowpie?

Your mom was right; the song is called "A GIRL IN A TAVERN." I don't think it is a Newfoundland song. I also remember hearing it when I was growing up. God bless.

Smiling Bill is still alive, he is in a seniors care facility in Hamilton.

Smiling Bill is from St. Charles P.E.I. but moved to Hopefield and lived literally a couple feet off the County Line Road deviding Kings and Queens counties. I know this because I am first cousins with his daughter in-law Lorraine. His son (also named Billy)and I, have played in many bands together over the years and remain fairly close. He and his own son Willian both share Smiling Bill's great talent and passion for music. Sadly, Smiling Bill passed away on Dec. 23, 2018 in Hamilton Ontario.

what a loss for us Islander's I live in Wellington, PEI and have heard this song many times on the hoedown Sat.nights. visiting my sister in Burlington and we were just talking about this song so I looked it up thank goodness for you tube signed Linda Delaney
