First Wednesday of the month (tonight) is the regular session at the Miner's Arms. It's the friendliest session I know, always great fun.

for anyone who hasn't attended this event before, there's a bi-annual folk gathering at:

Miner's Arms Folk Club
Miner's Arms, Priest Weston, Shropshire, 8:15 1st Wed (01938 561352)

every easter bank holiday weekend & also another in the autumn.

sessions are based on the pub, but there's scope for outside bashes on the campsite opposite the pub.

camping's free but facilities very basic.

the village is tiny & set among the shropshire hills in a most beautiful & picturesque area.

further up the hill from the campsite are some standing stone circles- The Stiperstones- & you'll see lots of energetic types out walking up the slopes to this monument. not me though- not with my knees!

last time, it was an effort to me climbing the north face of the campsite, as it seems to have an almost 1:10 gradient in two different directions.

after i'd erected me tent, it was a challenge trying to find a flat bit to stand a chair to sit on without toppling over & this was before imbibing any alcohol!

during the first night, after a tremendous singe & music sessh in the pib, i scaled the grassy height to me tent & got in me camp bed.

i lay there for a while then turned on my side to sleep. the bed fell over & threw me out & i slid down the slope & out through the door!

it was much too late to muck about with the bed there & then so i just anchored meself on the mattress & sleeping bag by one of the tent poles.

the next day i had to peg down the bed , the table, chairs - almost everything to stop 'em sliding out of the tent.

i wasn't alone with this prob,- colin who was next door invited me & other fiends over to his for lunch. he put out a table on the grass but almost immediately it began to topple over, so he had to dig little holes for the legs to ensure stability.

it was impossible for us to sit around the table without falling, so we all had to sit in a line facing forward down the hill.

don't let me put anyone off this interesting & challenging site though for the experience was truly hilarious.

i'm going to go down a day earlier this time so i can bag a flat bit on the campsite.

hope to see throngs there!

john j,

no, you can put caravans, camper vans etc on the hard standing by the pub carpark.

also there's some flat bits on the campsite if you can get there early enough to stake your claim.

So sorry I can't join you all this year for the semi-organised hill-rolling session - I've been tempted away to Miskin.

Thanks mr happy for all the information - I'm sure it'll help other Cats find this event!   Have fun everyone :-)

Haven't managed to track anybody down yet. This event tends not to be organised by the locals, and John and Yvonne are definitely not the contacts. I've just been trying to ring Glenda, the landlady, but she's not answering at the mo. Her number is 01938 561352 - she'll be able to tell you roughly what's on, although she may not have any info about the Village Hall stuff. You could try a PM to Nick the Fiddler - he may have a bit more info.

I may have to pop down there tonight I suppose (sigh!). These events are always a bit like this - the September one last year wasn't organised until the week before.

Mr Happy is right about it being a nice place,(although the standing stones aren't the Stiperstones John, they're a bit further on - almost in the back garden of my beloved Squilver) and don't forhet there's also the Bishops Castle Folk weekend in June, and I'll be publishing details of Squilverfest a bit closer to the date in the summer.

Trevor, we have had a little conversation on that at folkinfo. Pip seems to think the stones are Mitchell's fold and Phil Taylor has mentioned a wonderful legend about a magic cow.

Yes, the standing stones are Mitchells Fold. The Stiperstones is the next ridge to the east - the Devils Chair and Manstone Rock are the two highest points, Cranberry Rock is the closest to the Knolls carpark (we call it Lion Rock - have a look at the shape, viewing from the east), and just below the Stiperstones is Squilver. You're right about the names for the little communities hereabouts - The Bog, Snailbeach, Ratlinghope, Frogs Gutter, The Knills, The Knolls - to name a few. Sorry about the thred creep!

To Mr Happy: Joe le Taxi will not be playing this year; in fact I don't think there is anything planned for Village Hall on Friday evening but the usual seelid will probably be on Saturday.
To My guru: Yes, this was one of those "almost well-kept secrets". The pub is very small and some of the regulars (myself included) are getting to be quite large.
To Everyone: If you don't save me a seat I may have to sit on your knee.

I've just heard from Paul Hutchinson, virtualoso of the pianic accordion, that he will be playing for the seelid on Saturday in the Village Hall. Newcomers to the village might like to know that it is not far to walk but it does get very dark down those lanes so bring a torch.

had a marvellous tim at the session on friday.

didn't make the ceelid, but triped the light fantastic in the pitch black coming out through the beer garden door in the early hours of Sat morning.

i totally missed the few little steps & found meself flying through the air in a somersault, casually flinging away me precious instuments, then landing in a heap on me back in the road.

ooh! ow! the pain!- 2 buised knees - one cut.

after that experience, i brought along a toch to light me way on the other nights.

a truly brilliant session & sing-ar w/end & many tanks to yokie + owen for the hilarious rafle on Sunday afternnone- a truly staggering performance!!
