Subject: Banjoist-Fiddler wanted: MT Airy 6/6/03 From: Fortunato Date: 03 Apr 03 - 10:04 AM THE SHIVERS are looking forward to the Fiddlers Convention in Mt Airy, NC this June and we sure could use a good Old Time Country musician, either banjo or fiddle, to perform on stage with us. It's a requirement that Old Time Bands, must have one or the other and our fiddler is not attending. So if you're thinking of coming to Mt. Airy and are interested in playing with us, please answer here or PM with me. Also, if you're just going to Mt. Airy and wouldn't care to perform with us, that's ok, let me know and we'll just arrange to say howdy and pick a bit for fun. Chance Shiver |

Subject: RE: Banjoist-Fiddler wanted: MT Airy 6/6/03 From: GUEST,Russ Date: 04 Apr 03 - 11:00 AM What are the Mt. Airy rules? I ask because I don't go to Mt. Airy but I do go to Clifftop. At Clifftop the rule is that a musician cannot play the same instrument in two different bands entered in the same contest. If the same rule applies at Mt. Airy, that could cause problems for your search. |

Subject: RE: Banjoist-Fiddler wanted: MT Airy 6/6/03 From: Fortunato Date: 04 Apr 03 - 11:21 AM Russ, I just read the MT. Airy rules and I don't see anything about individuals performing in more than one band. Thanks for your note. I haven't been to Clifftop, but I understand from my friends in Roustabout that it's more of an actual competition with objective judgement. We should go to Clifftop sometime, I reckon. regards, chance shiver |

Subject: RE: Banjoist-Fiddler wanted: MT Airy 6/6/03 From: BanjoRay Date: 04 Apr 03 - 11:47 AM If you know the guys in Roustabout, you should definitely go to Clifftop! You can Jam for nine solid days, even if you have to take an hour off for one of the competitions. I got to meet some of those guys in 2000 and 2002 - very impressive. Cheers Ray |

Subject: RE: Banjoist-Fiddler wanted: MT Airy 6/6/03 From: Fortunato Date: 05 Apr 03 - 09:44 AM BanjoRay, Yes, indeed, they've told us that Clifftop is the very thing these days. It seems to fall in the only time when we can get our boys together for a family vacation, but we hope to make it some day. We've been playing music around Roustabout and the Doubledecker String band guys other for some25 or 3o years. I used to be the guitar player for Doc Scantlin's Red Hot Peppers (a Georgia Twin fiddle band) played old time, but it was a working band and we didn't go to the jamming much, but I left out of the oldtime crowd after that and went to playing rockabilly in the DC bars. When my wife and I started putting the new act together we crept back in the last few years. Well, BanjoRay keep in touch, we might see up Clifftop won of these days. Say do know an older couple named Westfall? We sang a lot with them last year and I hear they hang out on "the porch" at Clifftop? |

Subject: RE: Banjoist-Fiddler wanted: MT Airy 6/6/03 From: Fortunato Date: 05 Apr 03 - 02:18 PM Hey, Russ. Bill and Hazel came by our setup at Mt. Airy last year and stood to listen. After a song or two Bill went to get his guitar and they sat down with us. We played lots over the next few days. Odd thing was, Hazel is the image of my mother, though younger, and she has the same maiden name. She's from down Danville way, though, and my mother is from the upper Valley around Stanley, Va. We had lots of fun making music with them. In a strange way, we felt related to them; Hazel was just so much like my mother some years ago. Well, Russ, I hope we run up on you one of these days. Subject: RE: Banjoist-Fiddler wanted: MT Airy 6/6/03 From: Fortunato Date: 06 Apr 03 - 08:21 PM Russ, thank you very much. No they didn't mention the book, but I just returned from the website and I've hip. We did get one of their cassettes from Hazel. I can see that we are just a few of the many, many people Bill and Hazel have shared the old time country music with. We felt quite touched and honored by the hours they spent with us and, as I mentioned above, a kind of kinship. Your post sharing their book and knowledge is the very stuff that Mudcat is made of and too seldom happens these days. Please keep in touch, Russ. THANK YOU. Chance Shiver |

Subject: RE: Banjoist-Fiddler wanted: MT Airy 6/6/03 From: GUEST,Mary V. Date: 11 Apr 03 - 09:58 AM I have to ask the weirdest question? I am new to this and I never know what refresh means when I see it in a reply? Anyone care to share with me? Oh how I love fiddles and old time music. Would love to come down there sometimes. We do have fiddlers in Wisconsin... but they are pretty hard to find. |

Subject: RE: Banjoist-Fiddler wanted: MT Airy 6/6/03 From: Fortunato Date: 11 Apr 03 - 10:07 AM Refresh: posting to the thread to keep it appearing on the list, hoping for further input/more posts. In this case I wanted to keep it up in view for a while, hoping for some response. Once it's disappeared below the one day threshhold, it may never be seen again. Welcome to the mudcat, Mary V. |
