well son of a bitch...been on holiday for the past month...come back to work and it turns out they are closing the contract....laying everyone in my department off...so after over two years here, the longest I ever spent on a job, I get the pink slip....time to pound the pavement once more....and here I just found the most wonderful woman in the world...and she lives in Sydney...and I was going to start saving for a trip for February....but it looks like that will not occur...anyone need a tech support geek?

Even though they keep making noises about the economy coming back, it seems like there is another wave of cutbacks going on. The good news is that even though some places are cutting ranks, there are still places hiring, you just have to look a little harder. Depending on where you are, you might have to consider looking out of the area.

Also, when you put together your resume, figure out what your niche is, that is, the thing that youare best qualified for, and forget everything else and go for that. The reason is simple: there are a lot of people out there to choose from, so managers are getting a lot more resumes, and they can afford to filter out the people who aren't a close match to their requirements.

Sorry to hear that amergin. I'm on my fifth career, so-to-speak. Chin up and smile. The next job will be better. I only have one piece of advice... take whatever you are offered and keep looking if it's not what you want. The next potential employer will see you in better light if you are employed, especially if the "temporary" job is beneath your abilities.

How about a nice, cheap backpacking trip over here, Amergin. There's usually enough casual work for people to do here and there as they travel around Oz, and there are some really nice places to stay, including Newcastle, NSW of course!

Sorry to hear about it; I'm in the same boat. Just do all the appropriate things (polish your resume, do your networking, turn over every rock you can) and trust that something good is going to happen. Never quit believing that things will work out. As long as you're still "above the sod", you can make it better.

I saw quite a few tech support jobs on hotjobs that I wasn't qualified for, you'd probably fit the specs better. A lot of them were for TO but there are mudcatters here who you could stay with for a bit, probably.

Try setting yourself up with Abracat's system of daily email through its Adhound. I've used it several times when I thought I was going to be moving, and have come up with a couple of jobs I interviewed for. It searches the classified ads in the region where you tell it you want to search, and sends you an email every night reporting back. You re-up every couple of weeks and can modify it or run several in different areas and for different jobs. It's a hit or miss proposition, depending on the newspapers and the type of databases they use for their ads. But it's free and its interesting.

You could say "Term of employment ended" or something equally mundane. Under no circumstances should you say"Terminated due to criminal malfeasance", unless of course you're applying to Worldcom--

No job safe, that's for sure. I have worked for the same company for 30 years (cue cries of "you don't look old enough") and they're closing us down at the end of the year with 1,000 jobs to go. Better hit the streets and start looking...

well I have already started cutting back...so far my list of cutbacks includes sacrificing my dulcimer lessons....sigh...that part sucks bad...granted I'm probably ata point where I could figure alot of things out on my own...but it was so much better with a teacher...

I'm contemplating looking for a new job, too, because I'm sick of working for a boss that won't pay me a living wage, won't give me a raise, and only pays half my health insurance (but can buy himself a new truck, an air-conditioned horse trailer, and a fifth horse to put in it). Unfortunately, I'm in the US and George W Bush is president, and it sounds like the job market is in the gutter all over the world. So, now I'm trying not to chicken out.

And Ely, just because the U.S. economy is still in the tank doesn't mean the rest of the world is. The boom was not as insane here in Canada, and the "bust" is a lot shallower--even telecom is starting to happen again.
