Subject: BS: Anyone in the Catskills last week? From: Gloredhel Date: 20 Jul 03 - 02:26 PM Last week, ending yesterday, was the 9th annual Catskills Irish Arts Week, and it was quite a week! (Still feeling a bit ill from all the second-hand smoke I inhaled in pubs at 2am--but there won't be any smoke next year!) I took a singing workshop from Maggie Boyle, and noticed that she handed out one or two lyric sheets to us that had a Mudcat logo at the top. Several of the other students asked "What is this website?" which I was very happy to answer (though I neglected to warn them about some of you folks). So, I was wondering if any of my new friends were going to show up here, and also if any current 'catters were hanging around watching great Irish musicians like Felix Dolan, Tommy Peoples, Jackie Daly, Benedict Koehler, Billy McComisky, John Skelton, and the ever-wonderful Mary Bergin. |

Subject: RE: BS: Anyone in the Catskills last week? From: Oaklet Date: 23 Jul 03 - 04:58 AM It has always been my ambition to launch a thred and have it plummet towards the bottom, but people will insist on posting to it. It's just not fair! |

Subject: RE: BS: Anyone in the Catskills last week? From: Gloredhel Date: 23 Jul 03 - 11:05 PM Oaklet, thanks so much for boosting my morale. In case you wondered, I think I've started about five threads in my two years here, and none of them got more than 9 responses. And lookie here--6 posts, and 4 of them are me! I just love talking to myself! |

Subject: RE: BS: Anyone in the Catskills last week? From: DonMeixner Date: 23 Jul 03 - 11:12 PM Hi Gloredhel, Last weekend I was doing what everyone who plays in a band that is busy does. I was playing elsewhere. Looks to me like you got lucky. That is an area I have played before so I know those woods well. And don't be worried about so few posts. Mine either die at inception or cause so much controversy that they have a life of their own. Don |

Subject: RE: BS: Anyone in the Catskills last week? From: Zhenya Date: 24 Jul 03 - 02:03 PM I was up there last year and the year before, but alas, not this year. However, I wanted to add to the number of your responses so you can try and break your old record! Seriously, I've taken fiddle and song classes there, and really enjoyed it. I'd highly recommend it, and will probably go again some other year. (maybe next year.) I'm glad to hear you really enjoyed it. Could you give some more details about your song class? Zhenya |

Subject: RE: BS: Anyone in the Catskills last week? From: Gloredhel Date: 26 Jul 03 - 01:22 AM Hi Zhenya. I've been to Arts Week the past two years as well. My song class this year was nice because, being in the morning when no one wants to sing, there were only six of us, plus Maggie. She was able to take a slightly different approach and spend more time with each of us individually. She picked one song for each of us specifically that she thought would suit our voices (I got "Lord Gregory," and so did one other woman), and then worked with us on ornamentation and technique. But we also got printed lyrics to each of the songs she gave to others in the class, plus we looked through her repertoire book to see if there was anything else we wanted to learn. So I came away knowing one new song that really suits me, plus lyrics and recordings of about ten other songs (most of which I rather like). It's more than I can say for my song class with Karan Casey last year. She's a nice singer, but she didn't teach anything that I wanted to add to my repertoire. |
