Subject: RE: Lyr Req: 20,000 marching Cornishmen From: Zany Mouse Date: 27 Jul 03 - 07:52 PM Hmmmm - could be The Cornish Anthem. Chorus runs along the lines of: And shall Trelawny live? And shall Trelawny die? There's 20,000 Cornishmen shall know the reason why. Don't know anymore but I am sure there will be a Catter around who knows - it might even be in digitrad. ZM |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: 20,000 marching Cornishmen From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 27 Jul 03 - 10:48 PM The language has been revived, and a small number of enthusiasts have been bringing up their children to be bi-lingual; there are now, therefore, once again some people for whom it is technically their mother tongue. There is, incidentally, no such thing as "Cornish Gaelic"; the language is Brythonic, not Goidelic, and is closely related to Welsh and Breton. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: 20,000 marching Cornishmen From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 28 Jul 03 - 09:11 AM Check out this thread for info on a Cornish speaker & singer - Carrl Myriad of the Ragged Band gets a great wrap from an American fan!! Carrl is of Cornish descent & learnt his ancestral language as an adult & has received recognition for his service to the Cornish language & culture - an award that translates as Eminent Person if I remember correctly. And he's a good bloke, too, as well as a good performer & friend. http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=50377#764418 |

The film company hope to make more films in the future as part of Cornwalls bid to have the language premoted within the UK and EU. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: 20,000 marching Cornishmen From: greg stephens Date: 30 Jul 03 - 01:31 PM As a card-carrying Cornishman from as many generations back as I can trace, I cannot hear the Song of the Western Men without stirrings of patriotic pride. I am very sad that the language died, but die it did. If anyone wants to learn it at night school and write songs in it, fair play to them. But certain credulous people have been deceived into thinking they are hearing ancient real Cornish folk songs. They aren't. Any "traditon" created by back-translating English language songs into reconstructed Cornish is no more than a bit of fun, and can be fraudulent if it deceives the gullible. |
