Somebody has sent me this. Is it a wind up or does anybody have a solution before I start sticking pins in my eyeballs!

A RIDDLE THAT'LL KILL YOUR BRAIN!
>This is going to make you so MAD!
>There are three words in the English language that end in "gry".
>ONE is angry and the other is hungry. EveryONE knows what the
>third ONE means and what it stands for. EveryONE uses them
>everyday, and if you listened very carefully, I've given you the
>third word.
>What is it?
>_______gry?

total mis-direction in the question.

Depending on your source the answer to the question is either "The question is unasnswerable" or "it" is ONE.

A much better, and truer, linguistic riddle is to ask for a sentance that can be spoken correctly but never written!

Mind you, I don't know how I can give you the answer...;-)

I've been asked this one a few times, and never ('til now) seen it in print. People keep asking assuming I'll answer straight of.
I hadn't thought of trying 'the net', but a quick search on Google with Angry & Hungry gives several hits on the first results page. This one is quite thorough and describes why the answer could be "Three" or "Language"

much like the child's rhyming riddle I recall from years ago:

'If a feller met a feller in a field of fitches,
could a feller tell a feller where a feller itches?'

How many 'Fs' in that?

None, if you mean "that".

Another one from childhood...

Antidisestablishmentarianism, is a very long word. Spell "it"!

Ok - seeing as you all asked...

You can say 'There are three ways to spell *' But if you write it down it does not make sense.

* Can equal to, too or two OR rain, rein or reign.

If you write 'There are three ways to spell to.' It is completeley untrue because there is only one way to spell to! (or too or two...)

Cheers

Similarly, the sentence 'There are at least two ways to pronounce "read"' is true when written, but not when spoken. (Even if you say it twice with different pronunciations!)

The third "Gry" is anhungry. It shows up in Shakespeare (I don't know which play) and is supposed to mean "very hungry", although it sounds like it should mean "not hungry". I read this info somewhere, but I can't remember the name of the book.
