Subject: August quiz From: greg stephens Date: 15 Aug 03 - 10:20 AM Double prize. one for the guesser of the overall theme, one for the most correct answers. Subject: RE: August quiz From: greg stephens Date: 15 Aug 03 - 11:25 AM Manitas: that's a good run. All right except: 5 Not Lord randall(but it is another version of the same song) 14 not Edison 20 correct, but you need another step to the actual answer 28 not Clementine. Perfectly good answer, but I want another "my darling" 37 Brown Girl in the ring"is the right song, but another step(or leap) is needed to the actual answer Jeri: sorry, not Yoko. It's John( Manitas got it right). |

Subject: RE: August quiz From: greg stephens Date: 15 Aug 03 - 11:29 AM Jeri: no. I'm not washing my laundry, I've just been having a smoked mussel sandwich, and fixing up acts for a multi-cultural festival in Stoke. I still have some clean clothes in the cupboard, and I can still push my way past the dirty clothes in the bathroom to get to the loo, so why would I be washing clothes? Your question intrigues me. |

Subject: RE: August quiz From: manitas_at_work Date: 15 Aug 03 - 11:31 AM 20 Henry VIII is supposed to have written Greensleeves so the royalties go to royalty 5 Is this My son John.. my currant bun.. oh mother be quick, I want to be sick? 37 She looks like a sugar in the plum? |
Subject: RE: August quiz From: greg stephens Date: 15 Aug 03 - 11:35 AM steve: some correct. wrong ones are 9 not mcTell 14 nether sir Paul, nor Edison(I like the Edison answer though). 22 not general strike 28 not Clementine...could be, but isnt. 33. Not poor bu honest, but Geordie(like 34). Already answered by Amos. Well, I'm surprised nobody's got the theme yet, there are enough answers in. |
Subject: RE: August quiz From: manitas_at_work Date: 15 Aug 03 - 11:38 AM The theme seems to be the names of Kings and Queens of England from William I |
Subject: RE: August quiz From: greg stephens Date: 15 Aug 03 - 11:39 AM Manitas: 20 Correct on Henry VIII. 5 'Enery My Son, not John or Randall 37 Re:sugar in a plum. You're getting closer, but one more bit of the clue needs using to get the final answer.(I may add this is the clue I made deliberately difficult). |

Subject: RE: August quiz From: manitas_at_work Date: 15 Aug 03 - 11:43 AM 37 Plum Plum |
Subject: RE: August quiz From: greg stephens Date: 15 Aug 03 - 11:48 AM constant billy is half the answer(you'll see why when you get the theme). "Plum plum" is good, but still not there yet. |

Subject: RE: August quiz From: Jeri Date: 15 Aug 03 - 11:54 AM I saw the Cotton, shirt, Greensleeves and made an amazing leap of illogic. I had a couple other answers, but they seem to be equally strange. Like 32: Tiny Tim, and "tra-la-la-la-la" for 37b. 26 is Rogers, although I don't know if you want the first name. I think Stan sang it and I know Garnet did. If Tiny Tim is right, the quiz is sounding a bit Dickensian, eh? If it's wrong, everything's normal and I'm doing my usual great job at your quizes. (And 20 people will have posted before I sent this so it will be redundant.) |
Subject: RE: August quiz From: greg stephens Date: 15 Aug 03 - 12:04 PM Manitas: I've realised I have missed one of your postings. CONGRATULATIONS The theme is indeed the kings and queens of England from William I. Which is why I made Q37 so difficult. I also tried to make Q27 a bit hard, but failed to fool Amos and others. Keep going, you can win the prize for most questions right if you persevere, as well! |
Subject: RE: August quiz From: greg stephens Date: 15 Aug 03 - 12:08 PM Jeri, sorry, it's kings and queens, not Dickens! So you'll have a job fitting Tiny Tim in anywhere. |
Subject: RE: August quiz From: greg stephens Date: 15 Aug 03 - 12:17 PM APOLOGY WRONG CLUE Sorry, in a senior memory moment, I wrote clue 4 under the impression Steve Goodman wrote a song called Spirit of New Orleans, Of course, it was actually called City of New Orleans. So my clue was b*ll*x. The answer is Steve Goodman. |

Subject: RE: August quiz From: greg stephens Date: 15 Aug 03 - 01:08 PM Snuffy:thanks for laying them out, saves me the trouble. Queen Anne has also been asnwered(Ragtime Annie). Also William and Mary( Charming/Faithful/Constant Billy alternative names for tune). Though no-one has explained the Mary. Plenty more to answer, before I calculate the winner. surprised no guitarists have turned up and solved the trio 9/10/11. It was necessary to set a compex and elusive clue for Victoria, if that had been easy it would have been too simple to guess the theme! |

Subject: RE: August quiz From: Nigel Parsons Date: 15 Aug 03 - 04:03 PM Victoria: Plums. Hence the line in the anthem which tells of the queen's love of that self same fruit: "Send her victorias!" Nigel |

Subject: RE: August quiz From: greg stephens Date: 17 Aug 03 - 03:58 AM Have added up scores so far: seems to be Steve P 2 Ely 5 Manitas 11 Snuffy 4 Amos 2 Noreen 6 Which means it's still anybody's game, as there are loads of questions unanswered. Here are the ones still untouched 1,3,9,10,11,13,14,16,26. Snuffy's helpful list of kings and queens will give you the necessary first names for the answers. |

Subject: RE: August quiz From: Snuffy Date: 17 Aug 03 - 06:23 AM 1. Bill Bailey (won't you please come home) 26. Charles Kingsley (& John Hull) THREE FISHERS |
Subject: RE: August quiz From: Snuffy Date: 17 Aug 03 - 06:36 AM 13 Harry Cox lived at Potter Heigham Guessing here....... 10 Did Duane Eddy wear a black glove? 3 I don't know the cajun national anthem, but did Henry Clay Work write it? 16 Ned of the Hill was an earl who opposed the English, but I can't see a Black & Tan connection |
Subject: RE: August quiz From: greg stephens Date: 17 Aug 03 - 07:03 AM Snuffy: Bill Bailey, Charles Kinsgley and Harry Cox all correct. Henry Clay Work was agreat song writer, but not,I'm afraid, anything to do with the cajun national anthem. You're way off beam with the Black and Tan question. The clue is a bit of a red herring, not all Black and Tans are part of Irish history. Duane Eddie is not the black-gloved guitarist(he may have been, but not the one I'm looking for). Keep at it |
Subject: RE: August quiz From: GUEST,pdq Date: 17 Aug 03 - 12:06 PM oops, again..."Duke" Ellington did "Black and Tan Fantasy," maybe before he was a "Duke". |
Subject: RE: August quiz From: GUEST,pdq Date: 17 Aug 03 - 01:54 PM 3. whoever wrote Jole Blon 9. Eddie Lange 14. Alexander Graham Bell 16. Edward Kennedy Ellington |
Subject: RE: August quiz From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 17 Aug 03 - 02:38 PM Not many left by the time I saw this, and I've just been beaten to Edward "Duke" Ellington, too. 3. Henry Choates (fiddler; wrote Jolie Blonde). 9. Edward Carroll? 14. I suspect Henry Ford. On a minor point of order, the Kingsley poem was set by John Hullah, not Hull. |
Subject: RE: August quiz From: GUEST,pdq Date: 17 Aug 03 - 07:22 PM If the theme is royalty, I guess we want "King" Oliver on question 9, but he played trumpet (trust me on this one). |

Subject: RE: August quiz From: GUEST,MCP Date: 17 Aug 03 - 07:45 PM 9. I think Blind Willie Dunn was a pseudonym for the ubiquitous guitarist Eddie Lang used when recording with Lonnie Johnson. Mick |

Subject: RE: August quiz From: greg stephens Date: 18 Aug 03 - 07:04 AM Have just had a look, and there are only 2 questions unanswered. Both guitarists, both with Edward as the relevant monarch's name. Q10 wants a guitarist with a black glove, Q11 a guitarist wants a guitarist who backed Mezz and Ladnier. If someone would obligingly answer these two I can work out who's won, and send of some prizes. i imagine the knowledgable mr Google will help if asked politely(and skillfully). |
Subject: RE: August quiz From: greg stephens Date: 18 Aug 03 - 07:17 AM I've just checked out Eddie Condon. Guest MCP(mick) is perfectly correct, he did play with Mezz Mezzrow and Tommy ladnier, and has the right christian name. I was in fact thinking of the classic recordings of guitarist Teddy Bunn with Mezz and ladnier, but Eddie Condon is just as good an answer, so a point to MCP. So, only one left,Q10: a guitarist with a black glove, first name Edward(or variant therof). |
Subject: RE: August quiz From: Hrothgar Date: 18 Aug 03 - 07:47 AM If you included Lady Jane Grey, why didn't you include Queen Matilda? |
Subject: RE: August quiz From: greg stephens Date: 18 Aug 03 - 08:04 AM I do know a couple of songs with Matilda in the title, but frankly I didnt think she was crucial,I thought Stephen would do. Also, I was already trying to disguise Victoria and Oliver a bit, as I didnt want think things too obvious. So I guess matilda's very obvious name and not very crucial place as a monarch made me ignore her. But you're right, it was unfair, I did get William and Mary in, and lady jane Gray, so Matilda did deserve a mention really. |

Subject: RE: August quiz From: GUEST,MCP Date: 18 Aug 03 - 08:15 AM Could 10 be Ted Hawkins? Mick |

Subject: RE: August quiz From: Steve Parkes Date: 18 Aug 03 - 10:43 AM And just to be picky: King Stephen spelled his name S-T-E-P-H-E-N, not S-T-E-V-E-N! Stephen Parkes (with an 'E') |
Subject: RE: August quiz From: greg stephens Date: 18 Aug 03 - 11:43 AM Yes, Ted Hawkins it is for Q10. That's all the questions answered. Steve( Stephen): it was Snuffy, that spelt it STEVEN..not a mistake I am likely to make with my surname! Congratulations everyone, I will count up the scores shortly. |
Subject: RE: August quiz From: greg stephens Date: 19 Aug 03 - 06:52 AM Final scores Steve Parkes 2 Ely 5 Manitas 12 1/2 Snuffy 7 Amos 2 Noreen 6 1/2 Guest MCP 2 Guest PDQ 2 Malcolm Douglas 1 Glok 1. Which leaves Manitas undisputed winner by a long way, and he also gets another prize for guessing the theme of the quiz. Prizes on their way to him (and also to Snuffy for a previous quiz, I'm sorry to say I forgot to send him his prize for that). |
Subject: RE: August quiz From: John MacKenzie Date: 19 Aug 03 - 10:42 AM I take it you didn't get my PM of last week then, with possible answers to all 42 questions? Or were they all wrong?? Giok |
Subject: RE: August quiz From: greg stephens Date: 19 Aug 03 - 01:39 PM Glok: when I added up the scores I only credited you for the one question you answered right before anyone else had answered it. Hwever, following your query I've cross-checked the precise time your PM message came in, and in fact you should have scored 5. The answers were comong in thick and fast and I got the time of your PM wrong. However: 5 points wouldnt have put you top, so it doesnt affect the results. In any case, the instructions were quite clear that answers were to posted to the thread, so I'm afraid you're disqualified. Get in quick next time, though, and the prize will undoubtedly be yours. You got some of the obscure ones!! |
