Subject: Tune Req: I'll Sail upon a Dog-Star From: GUEST,MMario Date: 03 Sep 03 - 10:11 AM I'LL SAIL UPON THE DOG-STAR (D'Urfey?) I'll sail upon the Dog Star, And then pursue the morning, I'll chase the moon 'till it be noon, But I'll make her leave her horning. I'll climb the frosty mountain, And there I'll coin the weather; I'll tear the rainbow from the sky, And tie both ends together. The stars pluck from their orbs, too, And crowd them in my budget! And whether I'm a roaring boy, Let all the nations judge it. tune? anyone? |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: I'll Sail upon a Dog-Star From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 03 Sep 03 - 12:36 PM According to Simpson (The British Broadside Ballad and Its Music, 1966, 713), this is a re-working of Loving Mad Tom ("I'll bark against the dog-star") which appeared in Wit and Drollery, 1682, p.84 (and earlier, in The New Academy of Complements, 1671, No. 317). There was no tune direction, but it had the same stanza-pattern as The Oakerman, which was sung to the tune of Tom of Bedlam. D'Urfey's verses appeared in his play A Fool's Preferment (1688, Act IV), set to music by Purcell. I don't know where you would get Purcell's tune, but there are probably settings available. Failing that, the Tom of Bedlam tune (unrelated, presumably, but it would fit the metre with some arguable authenticity, though you wouldn't need the second strain) is in the DT under Bedlam Boys. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: I'll Sail upon a Dog-Star From: Mark Cohen Date: 04 Sep 03 - 04:52 AM I have Purcell's tune. About 20 years ago when I lived in Portland I took some voice lessons, and this was one of the songs my teacher had me learn! I think I might be able to figure out this new scanner well enough to make a JPEG file of the sheet music...will that help? Alternatively, I can enter the music into Noteworthy Composer format and send it to Mmario, who, as I recall, has some way of making those files available to normal people. Aloha, Mark |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: I'll Sail upon a Dog-Star From: GUEST,Tralfaz Date: 16 Oct 03 - 10:12 AM Don't know if you ever got the tune for this, but Purcell's complete songs are/were published by the "International Music Company" in New York in four volumes for voice and piano. "I Sail Upon the Dog Star" is in Volume 3. At least when I ordered them, the publisher's address was 437 Fifth Ave, NY NY 10016, and the catalog number for volume 3 is 1635. I'm sure there are many other editions, too. Hope that helps! |
