Subject: BS: Where to put honorary rose tattoo??????? From: Art Thieme Date: 20 Sep 03 - 10:08 PM As I said in the Utah Phillips thread, I was made an honorary member of The Rose Tattoo---the loosely organized traveling singers and group of rack-on-tours. Members, for the most part, all have a rose tattoo somewhere on their bodies. Where ought I put mine??? Art Thieme |

Subject: RE: BS: Where to put honorary rose tattoo??????? From: katlaughing Date: 20 Sep 03 - 10:50 PM Well, Fine Art, you could do like me and have one put on your right breast!**bg** Rog has roses on his right upper shoulder. First rule of tattooing: put it where YOU have control of it, i.e. where it can be seen or NOT according to your desire at any given moment! (Of course, I say this, now having got one on the inside of my left wrist. I couldn't help it, it demanded to go there!) Actually just inside the left wrist is a kind of neat spot; people don't see it unless you have your hand out and, when chording, etc. YOU are the one who sees it and is reminded of the honour it bestows (even if you don't chord much anymore.) luvyakat |

Subject: RE: BS: Where to put honorary rose tattoo??????? From: GUEST,reggie miles Date: 20 Sep 03 - 11:09 PM Well Art, I have a friend who is part of the gang and his is on his forearm. He's tried to get me to tattoo one on too but I'm a little shy of needles. I tried to get around the needle thing by offering to get one of those temporary jobs. You know, the kind that can be transfered with just a gob of spit but he didn't think the boys would approve. As to where you should consider attaching yours, all I can say is that for group photo ops with the rest of the brothers, the easiest or most acceptable pose might be one that exposes a part of your body that is most convenient like a forearm. That way all you'll have to do is roll up your sleeve, and you can show your smilin' face at the same time. Now should you choose to inprint your chest or back it may require removing your shirt before photos. Depending upon how buff you are this could be a nice effect or just get kind o' drafty. But if you choose to tattoo in a spot "below the belt" somewhere it may limit your ability to flash your colors in certain company. Of course that last scenario depends on how brave you are. ;) wink, wink, nudge, nudge, say no more. |

The other says, "That means I'll spend the next 3 days with my legs in the air !" Her friend responds, "Why, don't you have a vase ??" Art |

And don't all of them worship Moloch at the Bohemian Club? Does this mean that Art is going to have entree to the Rich and Powerful? That he will be hobnobbing with and the Bushes and the Kennedys and the Cheneys and the rest? That Art Thieme will soon be mentioned on the news with the same breathless awe reserved for Movers and Shakers? Art, when you're sipping your 75-year-old Scotch with those oilmen and bankers and tycoons and magnates, sometimes remember the little people, okay? I've been amassing a set of songs about circus sideshow characters. "The Bearded Lady", "The Tattooed Lady", "Snake Charmin' Baby", etc. I think "Sawing A Woman In Half" could fit in this bunch as well, and I can do a fair rendition of "The Man On The Flying Trapeze" on my musical saw. I figure I'll have a pretty good set list together by the time I get ready to run away from home and join the circus. Would you like me to guess your weight? I love the bearded lady cuz her kisses tickle so. Her whiskers make me prickle from my head down to my toe. That kiss with the moustache in it, no wonder I get passionate! If you catch him in the right mood, he'll show you where it used to be. (It was for his then girlfriend, Cathy Coonley ... I suppose later on it was inconvenient). He also has a small one on his right forearm; it may also be a rose, but that is barely discernable. Perhaps you should perform the song? Tattoo, c1983 by Gordon Lightfoot Whatever you think of me I'm still your friend So other than nothin' what's new The water's still flowin' Through the rose on my skin This here tattoo is for you The boys at the parlor downtown Didn't waste anytime a-puttin' it down Time has been wastin' away I can see it Go sailin' on by as it slips through my fingers The bow and the wave never wait for tomorrow They just keep on rollin' as straight as an arrow Good night Girl of my dreams You get better each day I wish I could see you somehow Girls that I love is there no other way This here tattoo is for now I'd been out drinkin' all day I got carried away at the parlor last night This summer rose is for you it's no wonder I bothered to wander back into the parlor It's red and in bloom and it's more than one color It lives on forever for just a few dollars Good night Whatever you think of me I'm still your friend So baby whatever you do Now that it's taken its permanent home This here tattoo is for you The boys at the parlor downtown Didn't waste any time a-puttin' it down Time has been wastin' away, you know time doesn't Wait for nobody to find what they're after It just keeps on rolling on down the deep canyons And through the green meadows into the broad ocean Good night Whatever you think of me I'm still your friend So other than nothin' what's new The water's still flowing Through the rose on my skin This here tattoo is for you The water's still flowin Through the rose on my skin This here tattoo is for you ------------------------------------------------------------------- Forgive me, but I just couldn't resist! |

Subject: RE: BS: Where to put honorary rose tattoo??????? From: jacqui.c Date: 10 Mar 09 - 08:44 AM I had a rose tattoo done last year, in remembrance of Utah. The man and his music had a profound effect on me over the short time that I knew him and it just seemed like the right thing to do. The tattoo is quite small and neat, at the top of my left arm. My daughter recommended the tatooist she had used. I went to that guy last August, accompanied by one of Sharon's friends, who was there to make sure that I had no after effects. (When did my daughter become my mother?) Sharon paid for the tattoo for my birthday. She's still wants to know when I'm going to start acting my age...... |

Subject: RE: BS: Where to put honorary rose tattoo??????? From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 11 Mar 09 - 02:45 AM Years ago (decades ago) I read a history of tattooing by a (British?) naval doctor & did those sailors get some interesting tattoos in some interesting places! There were also a few pics of very old tattoos on very old weathered skin - not a pretty sight on old inelastic skin, even tho the colours had faded. Tho naturally modern folks, especially women don't expose their skin to the conditions faced by working folks in past centuries & also take better care of their skin, so today's tats might not be such a sight in decades to come, & of course, removal techniques are better & getting better. Many years ago I knew an 18year old girl who wore a 2" square of sticking plaster on her upper arm to cover a tat she got one drunken night when she was 16. Dunno if 16 year olds were old enough to get tats in those days, but they were certainly not old enough to be drinking alcohol. I also knew a bloke who was tattooed in prison in his much younger days, & had made attempts with a knife to remove them. yuk Jacqui, my friend's daughter offered her a tattoo for her 50th birthday & they went off together to get matching pics! But it's not my thing. Years ago I knew a bloke who tried a temporary tat on his face - a small red spider web - folks thought he has a wound or blemish on his skin! sandra |

Subject: RE: BS: Where to put honorary rose tattoo??????? From: Gervase Date: 11 Mar 09 - 05:52 AM In the UK the tattoos women get in the small of the back are commonly known as the 'tramp stamp'. Which sort of sums up the demographics of tattooing on this side of the pond. I used to work with a guy who had been heavily tattooed in his young days. Even on the hottest days he would never roll his sleeves up because he was ashamed of the mess he'd made of his arms. To anyone even mentioning a tattoo he would always say, "just don't". |
