Subject: RE: BS: What has happened to Google? From: Ebbie Date: 03 Oct 03 - 06:42 PM Today's Yahoo News: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft's Internet Explorer Web browser have been exploited again, security experts said on Thursday, this time by a Trojan horse that redirected traffic from more than 100 popular Web sites to an IP address designated by the attacker. The Trojan, dubbed Qhosts and Delude.B by various anti-virus vendors, redirected traffic on compromised machines from a large number of legitimate sites--primarily search engines, among them those found at AltaVista, Google, Lycos, MSN, and Yahoo. According to Computer Associates, requests to surf to those search sites were shunted instead to a Web site that was taken offline within 24 hours of the Trojan's appearance. Don M., it wouldn't have anything to do with this, would it? |

Subject: RE: BS: What has happened to Google? From: Bill D Date: 03 Oct 03 - 07:01 PM wisenut may be fine, but it has VERY little information about its reach and origins. If you want something close to Google in speed, access and power, there is only one real alternative right now...http://www.alltheweb.com/ it does NOT have ads or biased search parameters. It doesn't do usenet searches, as Google has that locked up, but everything else is as good as Google. Subject: RE: BS: What has happened to Google? From: GUEST,pdc Date: 03 Oct 03 - 08:40 PM If you can't get Google, it's important to note what you ARE getting. There are a lot of browser hijackers these days that nicely redirect your search to whatever web site(s) they are promoting. There is a piece of freeware called Hijack This (link below) that is extremely fast, and will remove any browser hijacker you have. You need to know what you are doing, as when you run Scan with this program, it shows a whole list of what runs through or via your browser. But if you look at the list carefully, you can usually spot the ugly intruder. Also, Hijack This allows you to highlight anything you aren't certain about, then click for more info on it. Good luck -- I had three of the damned things, and got rid of them all. Download Hijack This |

Subject: RE: BS: What has happened to Google? From: Bassic Date: 04 Oct 03 - 12:49 PM pdc, tried to run Hiyjack This but it wont open for me, says I have a file missing or something. Anyway, are we talking about the same stuff that Spybot gets rid of here? If so I will stick with that cos I know it works on my pc. |

Subject: RE: BS: What has happened to Google? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 04 Oct 03 - 01:51 PM I downloaded Hijack This and installed it with WinZip - but now the PC has an error message saying "A required .DLL file, MSVBVM60.DLL was not found. So I do a find and there's an icon for this sitting there, and its been unzipped and so forth. But the error message is still there... |

Subject: RE: BS: What has happened to Google? From: GUEST,pdc Date: 04 Oct 03 - 03:31 PM Below is a different website from which you can download Hijack This. The one I sent you may have a problem -- I'm pretty sure that the one listed below is the latest version. Bassic, AFAIK, Spybot does not eliminate browser hijackers unless you buy the Pro version (I have the freeware version). By the way, if you are missing a dll file on any software, you can do a Google search for the specific file (include the .dll extension). You quite often come up with an excellent "dll site" which you can then bookmark. Good luck with this site: http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ |

Subject: RE: BS: What has happened to Google? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 04 Oct 03 - 05:48 PM The puzzle was that I actually appear to have the missing .dll file, but the program can't recognise it... |
|
Subject: RE: BS: What has happened to Google? From: Bill D Date: 04 Oct 03 - 06:22 PM McGrath..it often depend on where the .dll needs to be located...it may need to be in the windows/system folder, OR in the program folder...or both. That is a VERY common file, so it may just need a copy somewhere else. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: What has happened to Google? From: GUEST,pdc Date: 04 Oct 03 - 06:37 PM Bill D is right -- I checked my version, and the .dll file is not in the program file, only in the Windows System folder. Stick it in there, McGrath -- even if it's wrong, it won't hurt to have that file in your Systems folder. Fingers crossed for you. |

Subject: RE: BS: What has happened to Google? From: Dave the Gnome Date: 05 Oct 03 - 12:40 PM Found mine had gone up the spout while I have been away in sunny Spain! Seems to have been Qhosts or some such as I found an erroneous DNS entry and a perculiar hosts file. The Hijack program does NOT fix this! The only way I could resolve it was to set the netwrok DNS search back to automatic and remove the odd host files. It's fime now. Cheers Dave |

Subject: RE: BS: What has happened to Google? From: Dave the Gnome Date: 05 Oct 03 - 04:07 PM Open up your local area network properties. Highlight the TCP/IP section and open up the properties for that. Make sure you have either the same DNS server(s) that your ISP provided or check the box that says 'Obtain DNS server automatically'. Next do a search for files that are called 'hosts' and delete them. If you must have a hosts table for any reason you will be aware how to use it. Just delete the erroneous entries from it. Should do the trick:-) Cheers DtG |

Subject: RE: BS: What has happened to Google? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 05 Oct 03 - 06:31 PM Just had a look there - found a couple of icons which, when I right clicked and looked at "properties", described themselves as SAM files, created on 20 September 20 2003 and modified on 23 April 1999. How are these things on my computer evidently able to travel backwards in time? |

Subject: RE: BS: What has happened to Google? From: GUEST,pattyClink. Date: 19 Nov 03 - 05:33 PM Thanks for this thread. I've had myself hijacked away from EVERY search engine I tried to use in EVERY browser, to some stupid domain-name site. Really frustrating. There weren't any virus-fixes for this problem last time I looked, so I've been just waiting it out a few more days until I get a new PC setup, it was time to move to a new OS anyway. But, it's nice to know I'm not crazy. |
