Subject: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Sooz Date: 12 Oct 03 - 05:28 AM Well, I've given it a lot of thought and decided to blow my own trumpet. On Thursday evening, Mike and I won the BBC "Write a song for Lincolnshire" competition. You can listen to us here. |

Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: BanjoRay Date: 12 Oct 03 - 11:55 AM A beautiful song, Sooz. My dad was in Wellingtons and Halifaxes. It brought back a lot of memories of the tales he used to tell. Cheers Ray |

Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Sooz Date: 13 Oct 03 - 12:30 PM Woven threads of linen. (Written by Sue Dewsbury) During WW2, Roses made gun turrets for Lancaster bombers instead of machinery for wrapping chocolates. The wife of the owner of the company used to give tea parties for both visiting dignitaries and the servicemen stationed in the area. She asked all of her visitors to sign her tablecloth, and she embroidered them for posterity. This song tells the story of one local airman who missed out on her hospitality, but made it to the tablecloth in the end. Sixty years after the Dambuster raid, the cloth is on display at the Gainsborough and District Heritage Association. In the early 1940's when the war was at its height The factories in Gainsborough made munitions for the fight Aerodromes were all around, Hemswell, Scampton too Full of all the young men in their uniforms of blue Mrs Gertrude Rose was like the mum they'd left behind She fed them tea and sandwiches and let their nerves unwind Then they went back to their squadrons to fight the German foe Then she stitched their names onto her cloth - a talisman of woe Woven threads of linen and stitches neat and small Tell the stories of the young men who went away to war Bomber Harris was a tea-time guest in 1943 He'd watched the new gun turrets made in the factory Guy Gibson and the other lads from 617 came With their Lancasters and bouncing bombs as dambusters found fame Woven threads of linen and stitches neat and small Tell the stories of the young men who went away to war Flying Officer Johnny Johnson didn't go there for his tea His mother lived in Gainsborough so it was her he went to see He aimed the bomb from N for nut which breached the Eder dam Celebration in the plane then Gibson's order "Head for home" Woven threads of linen and stitches neat and small Tell the stories of the young men who went away to war When Johnny came back to Gainsborough in 1995 He saw the tablecloth with all the names - few still left alive He took a pen and signed the cloth a tear drop in his eye Remembrance of comrades true - so many had to die Woven threads of linen and stitches neat and small Tell the stories of the young men who went away to war |

Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Gareth Date: 13 Oct 03 - 03:51 PM Thanks Sooz - Moving, very moving. Gareth |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: GUEST,Strollin' Johnny Date: 14 Oct 03 - 09:12 AM A great song and it was well performed on the night - good singing and a pleasure to hear a fingerpicked guitar after all those strummers! A well-deserved win. Very evocative lyrics for me, as both me grandad and me old dad were amongst those who worked for Rose Bros., building the packaging machines and then, during WW2, the Lancaster gun turrets. One thing I don't understand - how come '16 Miles To Every Acre' (Sooz's entry last year) didn't get into the first three in the previous competition? It was every bit as good as 'Woven Threads of Linen'. If any of the judges are out there, can you (dare you) enlighten me? Johnny |

Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Sooz Date: 17 Aug 06 - 04:39 AM I've refreshed this old thread to save bunging up the system with a new one. Who is entering this year? (The inspiration hasn't hit me yet but the closing date isn't until 8th September) For anyone who hasn't had a go already or not even been to the finals night it is really friendly and great to be a part of. |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Georgiansilver Date: 17 Aug 06 - 05:23 AM I will be entering again. Final ten in 2004 with my song performed by your good selves (Mr+MrsSooz). Second place last year with my song performed by Jane Kitchen...This year there appear to be a lot of people entering who did not enter last year so competition must be strong. I would urge anyone with any writing ability and an 'ear' for a tune of your own making to enter. If I can do it with no previous experience I am sure many others can. This year my song will be sung by Rosie Jackson (Myrtle) with me doing the harmony and Phil Brougham (The Fence) playing guitar. Recording it tonight with the Sooz family...be nice to see the dog again as not seen for almost a year. Best wishes and good luck to all who enter this year. Mike |

Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Big Al Whittle Date: 17 Aug 06 - 05:39 AM I'm in....but I've decided to rerecord the song I've already sent in. I didn't intend to this year, but I got this idea for a song, so I thought I'd give it a bash. |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: GUEST,William McGonnagal Date: 17 Aug 06 - 09:07 AM A very nice song. |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Amos Date: 17 Aug 06 - 10:31 AM I am sure that is not the real Wm McGonnagle. For one thing he would be impossibly old and senile--but then, he always was. For another thing he would not say that. He would pen a REAL song for Lincolnshire. E,g,: "Of all the places I have been both far and near, Few can compare with the beauty of Lincolnshire. It has rich green meadows, which most beguiling lie, Rivers and forests to enchant your eye. So if you decide to wander from your own hearth's fire There are few better choices of places to go than dear Lincolnshire." I think that's about his speed. A |

Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Grab Date: 18 Aug 06 - 10:08 AM Song for Lincolnshire? Oh aye... Flat flat flat flat, flat flat flat CLEETHORPES. Flat flat flat flat, flat flat flat GREEN. Flat flat flat flat, flat flat flat GRIMSBY. Flat flat flat flat, flat flat flat FEN. Did I miss anything important? ;-) Graham. PS. Good song Sooz! |

Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Sooz Date: 18 Aug 06 - 11:11 AM Thanks Graham - what about the Wolds? |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Rasener Date: 18 Aug 06 - 11:23 AM Hill Hill Hill Hiil WOLDS Hill Hill Hill Hill STEEP HILL LINCOLN I feel a song coming on called All is not flat in lush green Lincolnshire |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Rockhen Date: 18 Aug 06 - 11:46 AM I wrote one called 'Lincolnshire isn't all Flat'... We (the Wild Wolds Women) entered it into the self-same competition a few years back. Unfortunately we didn't get through to the finals althought we did sing it on the telly which was exciting. I seem to think we sang it live on the (Lincolnshire) Wolds, complete with accordion, cello and guitar or did we just mime, hmmm memory failing, now...I remember it was a bit windy so singing with long hair is a bit of a giggle. The competition entry was recorded on a tatty old cassette player, if I remember correctly...blooming heck, it is not that long ago but I feel ancient! Lincolnshire isn't all Flat is still available on our Wild Wolds Women first cd (shameless plug!) pm me for details! :-) I love hilly Lincolnshire it is Beeeeeautiful! |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Rockhen Date: 18 Aug 06 - 11:47 AM In fact, Villan...I am not sure that we haven't sung that already at the MRFC....hmmmm, guess it needs to be added to our set on the 22nd of Sep! |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Rasener Date: 18 Aug 06 - 12:14 PM Thats a good idea Rockhen |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Tim theTwangler Date: 20 Aug 06 - 12:21 AM Heck Ididnt realise you were allowed to mime! For those of us who never entered a competition before, can someone tell me if you get any feed back from the judges ? I mean other than if you get through to the final stages. I just like to get peoples opinions on what I write,I dont always take any advice given but constructive critisism is a great thing I have found. Any how good luck to all who are entering and can someone let me know about the final as would like to go along for a listen. I thought maybe it was ticket only or only enough seating for freinds and family you know that sort of thing. If iot isn it would be really cool to go hear you all and see how 'tis done. |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Rasener Date: 20 Aug 06 - 02:38 AM The feedback Tim, is if you come 1st, 2nd or 3rd or win the musicians award. Its not X factor yet M8 |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 20 Aug 06 - 04:10 AM Has anyone else found that 4 minutes is very restrictive - how do you write a meaningful, story-telling song that lasts 4 minutes or less? That's pop-music territory. |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Sooz Date: 20 Aug 06 - 04:19 AM Spilsby theatre is quite a place. It used to be the courthouse and it still has cells although they are now used as dressing rooms. Most years you only get a seat if you buy a ticket (or if you are a judge) as the finals concert is very popular. Competitors generally find perches on old bits of scenery back stage or in the bar. The most valid feedback is from the audience (not the judges) they join in and clap a lot if they like your song! Four minutes is long enough for me SJ - my memory span can't cope with any more! |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Big Al Whittle Date: 20 Aug 06 - 04:22 AM Yes I do find it restrictive. But When I listen to the rubbish song I wrote last year, I am pleased they shut me up after four minutes or so. They should have had a gong and when I got to the end of the first verse shouted - okay, that's enough - bugger off fatso! This year i've done better though, so I think, though I do tend to get hypnotised by my own creations. Its like some people enjoy the smell of their own farts. |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 20 Aug 06 - 04:22 AM OK, now let's see..... My baby done left me (shoo-wop-a-dooby) She hurt me so bad (shooby-dooby-doo-wah).............. :-) :-) |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Rasener Date: 20 Aug 06 - 04:26 AM I guees the other point about tickets Sooz, is that if you are a competitor, don't wait on the off chance you might be in the final. Get your tickets ASAP and if you get into the final, thats a bonus. Where do you get the tickets from though? |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Rasener Date: 20 Aug 06 - 04:35 AM >>The competition is designed to encourage the writing of new folk songs that are relevant to our county. Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Ruston Hornsby Date: 05 Sep 06 - 07:44 AM Just what is a "Lincolnshire Feel" as specified as one of the requirements for a Song for Lincolnshire?? |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Big Al Whittle Date: 05 Sep 06 - 08:42 AM well if you can think of a rhyme for Dogdyke and Mareham le Fen - I'd call that a Lincolnshire feel. |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Ruston Hornsby Date: 05 Sep 06 - 09:49 AM This sounds like a challenge. How about including Claxby Pluckacre and Grimblethorpe as well..... |

Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Micca Date: 05 Sep 06 - 11:53 AM do you mean something like Mudflats all the day the edge of fenland where the shitehawks fly everything is grey the stump of Boston seen from miles away saw the Wash as it run dry Where Lackland lost his jewels in the sea Looking on your Eastern shore Saw winter sunrise screamed, "no more" I stood by that grey northern sea And moaned a song for Lincolnshire (apologies to the Colcloughs) I'll get me coat |

Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Rasener Date: 07 Sep 06 - 01:23 AM I assume the Lincolnshire feel is not the same as a Mudcatter hug. Or is it possible that Lincolnshire Mudcatters whilst having a hug with Non Lincolnshire Mudcatters have a quick feel at the same time. |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Big Al Whittle Date: 07 Sep 06 - 01:45 AM Well i for one would like to see the parody of Song for Ireland in its totality. I really love Lincolnshire - its my home county, but I'm not blind to its faults and I've taken too many other people there - not to know the effect it has on some people. Its not everyone's cup of tea, but as I've got older - I've found increasing pleasure in driving through the big skies around Boston, sorting through the tat at Grantham market, watching the bowls matches at Skeg, the simple pleasures of the alcopops gangs as they throw bags of chips around and queue up for the nightclub opening in Cleethorpes, Market rasen folk club, and the harmless yokel who runs it.... the list is endless. It reminds me a bit of the story Alan Bennet tels about meeting Betjeman at a lecture on The Joys of Reading - and finding John B very disappointed that it was about the delights of literature - rather than that town in Berkshire. The Joys of Reading ....now that would be a challenge! the serendipity of Slough.....! Lincolnshire's better than those places. |

Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Georgiansilver Date: 07 Sep 06 - 04:22 AM Well Micca..the song is a stroke of genius but not altogether accurate...a little too negative for the liking of most of us I'm sure....Ask all the holiday makers as well as the locals and love Lincolnshire for what it really is eh? Best wishes, Mike. |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: GUEST Date: 07 Sep 06 - 04:49 AM GS, I agree, a little negative, but the self-deprecating feel of the earlier parts of this thread sort of leaked through, I like and appreciate the area and have some good friends there too, and I appreciaate their (very english)ability to laugh at themselves and their "featureless" county and at themselves. Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: GUEST,Ruston Hornsby Date: 07 Sep 06 - 05:04 AM Anyone who implies that Lincolnshire is Flat has never ridden a bicycle from Grimsby to Market Rasen via Binbrook...... |

Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Rasener Date: 07 Sep 06 - 05:06 AM Micca What is "featureless" supposed to mean ? I have lived in London, Midlands, Berkshire, Torbay, Scotland and Holland. I have been on holidays to Spain, Potugal, Tunisia, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany. I have lived in Lincolnshire for 4 years now, and have grown very fond of it. There are some lovely areas of Lincolnshire and it is not flat as some people seem to think. I suggest you get you facts right. Les |

Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Rasener Date: 07 Sep 06 - 05:13 AM Ruston Hornsby, you should have popped in to Market Rasen Folk Club to recover. :-) |

Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Micca Date: 07 Sep 06 - 07:37 AM I agree, there is much to enjoy in Lincolnshire, I was endeavouring to use the "perception" of the area by those, perhaps, less familiar with it, after all what good is a "stereotype" if not used in a "stereotypical" way? As to "featureless" well, some of the areas in the vicinity of the Wash were pretty featureless and samey, and , dare I say it "Flat".. icca |

One little corner of Lincolnshire which in my honest opinion is not typical of the rest of Lincolnshire. |

Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Tim theTwangler Date: 07 Sep 06 - 01:22 PM He he is funny how defensive the yellow bellied ones can be innit? Other places seem to inspire a certain air of unshakeable superiority in those who inhabit them. Maybe our love for our home land is the stronger if we can recognise its shortcomings and love it in spite of those? Personaly being a cod head as well as a yellow belly I have always been gratefull that I have not had to struggle all my life with a hideous accent or dialect. Great Grimsby is the only place in the country where we speak the Monarchs language naturaly. |

No place that I wish better things for. No place I would rather be this evening. |

Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Ruston Hornsby Date: 08 Sep 06 - 03:58 AM I hope the Song For Lincolnshire doesn't result in a Lincolnshire version of what we have over in the North West where I've been exiled for a few years now.....the Folk Cabaret. These are the bands like the Houghton Weavers, Fivepenny Piece, Oldham Tinkers and Gary and Vera Aspey who specialise in doing "Lancashire Evenings" where you know two things: 1. That at some point during the evening you'll be served a Hot Pot Supper with pickled red cabbage, and 2. You will have a whole evening of contempory songs that are obliged to be as full of Northern cliches as possible - clogs, flat 'at, pit, mill, poor, shawl, tin bath etc etc - usually delivered in the "when I wuz a lad" mode. Thankfully very little of this makes it into the actual folk clubs, more or less resticting itself to special nights at the local town hall, social clubs and the like. Thank goodness that in people like John Connoly, Dave Evardson and Co, Lincolnshire has songwriters who can write songs about past times with a bit more subtlety! And they're letting me back in this weekend - back to Lincolnshire tonight! |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Big Al Whittle Date: 08 Sep 06 - 04:40 AM Lincolnshire doesn't really lend itself to that sort of thing - a pity really, it would be a nice little sub industry! I think because it wasn't really an industrial economy - that sort Gracie Field/sing as we go/ we're all in it together ethic that you get in Northern and Cockney music isn't really there. I don't know if you followed the Celtic Music/English music debate. My reaction was of course English music is celtic in origin - all our place names are viking in origin, the same sort of roots that Irish music springs from. Somebody sagely pointed out - only on the east coast mate! If you think of the classics of Lincolnshire song - Brigg fair, Creeping Jane, I suppose sea and fishing songs, poaching songs of course - the Lincolnshire Poacher - lest we forget! Theres a clear sort of pastoral theme therein. In most of my songs I try fairly ruthlessly to to stick to talking about my suburban roots - and much joy has it brought me. However it was a life lived in Lincolnshire and as valid as the tales of poachers and farmers. Strangely enough I seem to writing on a more mainstream topic this year. Perhaps the competition is starting to influence my writing! |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Rockhen Date: 08 Sep 06 - 05:00 AM I agree with the idea of using what you know in your music as in wld's comment, "In most of my songs I try fairly ruthlessly to to stick to talking about my suburban roots - and much joy has it brought me. However it was a life lived in Lincolnshire and as valid as the tales of poachers and farmers." I am a Lincolnshire lass. Born here and lived here most of my life. I love Lincolnshire and what it means to me and my family. I wasn't brought up on a farm and I didn't have a father who was a fisherman etc etc. I do, however have just a few lovely memories of this county and sometimes they creep into my songs. If I tried to write more traditional songs, I think they would probably sound a bit contrived. (Btw weelittledrummer have you got any other cds? Really enjoying listening to 'Sacre Bleu!' and 'St Peter and J.D.' Not creeping or being paid to say that, have a listen to wld's music on his website, great!) wee little drummer |

Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Tim theTwangler Date: 08 Sep 06 - 08:14 AM Obviously by the accent you type with V you are not aware of the huge variety of underwear bushes that grow in and around the quieter lanes and laybyes of Lincolnshire. I am assured that one can aquire a whole wardrobe of kinky and only slightly soiled underwear. And this with the ease with which in other areas one can assemble the tasty berries and nuts that are the basis of a delightful summer pudding. As you have no doubt noticed those of us who are aware of WWWs "collecting activities" are very carefull to make sure it is Terry or some other poor innocent that ends up wearing their free handouts at their gigs. I understand that medicated shampoos may help in all but the most serious cases mate so dont despair. |

Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Tim theTwangler Date: 09 Sep 06 - 10:07 PM why bother do you think Lincolnshire will listen if you do write one? write a song for an anonymous place so that you can insert names as apropriate when you are gigging. |

Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Rasener Date: 10 Sep 06 - 02:16 AM >>why bother do you think Lincolnshire will listen if you do write one?<< What sort of a statement is that Twangy? |

Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Tim theTwangler Date: 10 Sep 06 - 06:38 AM One containing words, composed and typed in by someone from Lincolnshire. We are all entitled to an opinion and if you have one of those around here it is all to easy to be marked out for it. The population of this county must be about the most defferential, apathetic and easily pleased. With the lowest standards in nearly every thing in the country. We have high polution levels, low wages, poor housing, crap public services, low voter turnout, next to nil community contribution. Generally high crime rates, low acheivement in education.] And we are supposed to be grateful. I know that some of us are lucky to live in nicer parts of the county. Some are not so hard up but that is generally due either to the profits from the exploitation of the poor. The majority of the population of Lincolnshire would have a far better life if they moved. |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Georgiansilver Date: 10 Sep 06 - 08:00 AM But Tim! There are a lot of lovely people here and in spite of the so called featureless landscape there are many entries each year with songs about Lincolnshire. I moved here (to Gainsborough) three years ago after marriage break up and had a busy and comfortable lifestyle which includes Folk clubbing/writing/performing(occasionally) and am totally happy with life in Lincolnshire.....It's a great place to live. Best wishes, Mike. |

Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Rasener Date: 10 Sep 06 - 09:28 AM There's a song in there Tim. |

Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Tim theTwangler Date: 10 Sep 06 - 10:46 AM Mike I did say some have a better time of it than others. But if you go visit the other side of it and see the relative poverty and notice the run down and rougher areas there are a lot of better places to be. The estates where a lot of people have to live are awfull depressing dirty run down places. The people in them would be grateful for jobs that pay so badly that most of us wouldnt get out of bed for them. There are race attacks in the streets of Grimsby against people who are white! The police are indifferent to calls for assitance around here unless you are well off or capable of getting your story in the local press. In lincoln there are areas just as bad if not worse. I dont know about Gainsbro The people with money move out to the villages, and live seperately from the majority of the population. There is nothing of any me ning for the kids in these places to do. the schools system is only there to train them to work in factories or whatever industry currently needs fresh fodder to exploit. There is nothing in the area to give anyone any pride in being born here. This area has been a s**t hole since the Bitch Thatcher got her claws on the country and taught her mantra of greed is good and screw every one else to the country. LOL discuss. |

Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Big Al Whittle Date: 10 Sep 06 - 02:09 PM I grew in the Boston of fifty years ago, and to be quite honest - the picture that Tim paints is entirely recognisable to me. I don't think the stuff you are talking about is the result of Thatcherism. Much as I would like her to be blamed for everything. The sort of class of petit bougeoisie that Thatcher sprung from had its equivalent in every Lincolnshire town - a freemasonry in every sense that kept Lincolnshire a backwater - culturally and economically. That way they were the big fishes in the pond. I warn you though Tim - you have a discovery yet to make. Namely Americans love America, The Irish love Ireland, Russians love Russia - and even though you may not be aware of it - Lincolnshire is deep somewhere now in your make up as a person, and you may not realise it, but you love your homeland - Heimat - call it what you will. Parts of Lincolnshire are undeniably flat - but to us lot, it is never featureless - never disinteresting. |

Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Big Al Whittle Date: 10 Sep 06 - 06:18 PM I think it has a lot to do with songwriting Johnny. So much is verboten, when it comes to folksongs and folksinging. That's why the whole folk process is moribund in so many ways. Heres a guy saying, Lincolnshire isn't like that - so I can't write a folksong about it - the picture postcard stuff that passes for folkmusic on Radio2 offends his intelligence. It expresses nothing of his life experiences. Is folkmusic like Winnie the Pooh and it has to stay in the enchanted 100 Acre wood with its poachers and sail-i-ors and handsome maidens, or is folk music like Piglet who fitted into Chritopher Robin's pocket and could go out with him into the world. Its a valid debate. |

Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Big Al Whittle Date: 11 Sep 06 - 03:06 AM My father joined the Boston Borough police in 1939 - he was from Lancashire - from St Helens to be precise. Compared to the industrial pollution that was the everyday lot of working people in St Helens - he saw Lincolnshire as a bright and clean environment. Before long he was off on his war service, but during the war - he married my mother and he lured her back to Lincolnshire with tales of this bright new world he had discovered on the east coast. My mother detested Lincolnshire from the very first, for nearly all the reasons you mention, Tim. She thought of it as the last outpost of the feudal system, virtually devoid of civilised values and moreover she encouraged her children to distance themselves from the place. I left Lincolnshire when I was fifteen, but came back to spend four unhappy years in Grantham - qualifying as a teacher. It came as quite a shock to me, when I started revisitiing Lincolnshire from the 1980's onwards doing gigs how deep the feelings the place stirred within me. The BS section is the non music section below. As we are songwriters discussing how we arrive at the themes for our songs - it doesn't really apply. I remember I was in Boston one time, and I picked up the newspaper - The Standard and the lead story was about the drugs problem on the streets I had grown up in, but was no longer a part of. Right then and there Tim, I YEARNED to write the sort of song you are talking about. But I could see it wasn't my song to write. Keep at it mate, you'll get there! i was always up and about - but not for long - my energy levels are shit. I've got a scan today. I'm waiting to see a surgeon. all the best to all al |

Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Ruston Hornsby Date: 11 Sep 06 - 09:54 AM Tim - it's not just Lincolnshire you know. Come and try Manchester/Bolton/Bury/Blackburn/Burnley/Preston/Warrington/Runcorn/Wines/Liverpool and yes, St Helens is particularly grim in terms of social attitudes and deprivation. I don't think it's a Song for Lincolnshire we need - it's a lament for the whole country. |

Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Big Al Whittle Date: 11 Sep 06 - 06:06 PM Very true what you say Ruston - social problems afflict every town. However theres a certain poignancy about how they hit your area. Anyway folksongs are often about the particular, rather than the generalised problem. Think of the New deserter, which starts As I was a walking along ratcliff Highway, and tells the story from a subjective point of view. of course people have written in a general way quite successfully - Woody Guthrie's Do Re Mi, for example. Strangely enough I think it loses something without it being the statement of a lone individual. Quite recently I watched John Mellencamp's version of Do Re Mi, on a DVD commemorating Woody and there were some excellent musicians on the DVD - but to my mind - it was so obviously a song about losers rather then a song for gorgeous looking pop stars with virtuoso musicians backing them on expensive classic guitars. I think what I am struggling to say is that - context, in a way is part of the writing in our artform - context which the artist has to try to provide. |

It seems a bit of an odd thing for me to do buit it keeps Mrs T happy and there is no chance of me having to go there and sing. It is a different feeling deliberatly setting out to write a particular song innit? Usualy mine sort of turn up,and wriggle around a bit until they are ready. i hope I can get the time of to attend the final to cheer some you others on. Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Mr Happy Date: 21 Sep 06 - 06:07 PM Walking all the day Near tall buildings where pigeons build their nests Mottled-winged they fly They know the call of binbags in their breasts Saw Black Smoke against the sky Where twisted perverts run down to the sea Living on your eastern shore Saw summer sunsets, asked for more I stood by your near northern Sea And sang a song for Lincolnshire! |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Sooz Date: 22 Sep 06 - 02:36 AM We have few tall buildings hereabouts! Mind you we do have pigeons and perverts just like everywhere else. I wish I'd written this one: Lincolnshire Song John Sykes Time stands still on the Lincolnshire fenland Which the sea once embraced in its watery arms The dykes and the ditches cut deep their incisions And the only landmarks are the churches and farms When the rain tumbles down the earth it drinks deeply The plough turns it over like chocolate spread And the toiling farm workers keep their yearly promise That this nations belly is constantly fed The pageant of history is marked in the topsoil The riches and relics lie under each sod There are secrets that will forever be hidden While the towers of the churches play homage to God A man is a speck on the Lincolnshire landscape A thought that is made the more poignant at night As you stand underneath the starry umbrella Til the moon rubs it eyes in the clear morning light Spring cleaning the fields in life giving sunshine Turns brown soil to green then yellow and red The women bend backs beheading the tulips To strengthen the bulb in its peaty bed In the dark days of Hitler the Lancaster bombers Took death and destruction to heaven knows where The struck a return course for Lincoln Cathedral And staggered back home on a wing and a prayer I've heard people say that the hills of the Pennines Are more pleasing to view than the fields of the Fens But look to the sky the clouds the horizon And watch the slow sunset when days at an end. |

Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 22 Sep 06 - 06:44 PM When's the list of finalists due to be announced, and by what means? S:0) |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Sooz Date: 23 Sep 06 - 09:07 AM Past experience suggests that the announcement may be made on Wednesday 27th September but because there are so many entries I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't happen until Wednesday 4th October. In previous years thay have announced the ten finalists and then done a FA style draw for the order on the night. |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Tim theTwangler Date: 23 Sep 06 - 01:09 PM FA Style? Words that seem to fit rather badly with each other. LOL Heard Dave and Julie Evardsons entry last night at MRFC was very good. All about the Rope Walk at Barton. The judging must be very difficult in these comps anyone done any? |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Sooz Date: 23 Sep 06 - 03:10 PM Yes, I was a judge before I got round to entering the competition. It is an interesting experience! |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Tim theTwangler Date: 23 Sep 06 - 06:26 PM So what is the way 'tis done then oh knowlegable one? |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Sooz Date: 24 Sep 06 - 04:05 AM Basically each judge comes up with their rank order. (They don't sit together during the performance and they have a tape of all the songs in advance). Then they compare notes. Then they argue, trying to justify each of their favourites above the others until three winners emerge! |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Rasener Date: 24 Sep 06 - 04:29 AM Just the same as last year when I did it. |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Tim theTwangler Date: 24 Sep 06 - 04:50 AM So three winners eh! It all sounds very interesting actually. I cant imagine V and Sooz disagreeing about music. LOL How do the judges come to be invited? Are they all as involved and knowlegable as you two? Or are there some who work for the sponsors and maybe have different objectives in the judging? |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Rasener Date: 24 Sep 06 - 11:27 AM To be a judge you have to be invited. Whoever does the invites, looks at people who might be suitable and then gets in touch with them. Sooz wasn't a judge last year Twangy, so we didn't have to disagree :-) |

Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Tim theTwangler Date: 25 Sep 06 - 08:16 AM It sounds like a great thing this comp I think the should do a cd of all the entries would be really interesting to hear all the ones that dont make it and choose your own favourites. |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Big Al Whittle Date: 25 Sep 06 - 09:06 AM if I were you Tim, I'd have a listen before coming up with such a proposal. I can't even stand to listen to my entry last year. I hynotised myself into thinking it was allright by practising it - but it really was rubbish. Thats the thing about songwriting - you have to develop confidence in and comittment to, what you create. Right now I've convinced myself I've written a brilliant song for this year - and maybe that is how it has to be. |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 25 Sep 06 - 09:30 AM Mine's a collaboration with another guy so, if it's crap, I'm only partly to blame! :-) S:-) |

Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Tim theTwangler Date: 25 Sep 06 - 01:18 PM Well I am pretty sure mine is a work of genius!lol and so will be all the others that you guys have done. I would think I could make any song sound crap and by the same token any you two played on sound brilliant. |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Big Al Whittle Date: 25 Sep 06 - 06:38 PM when I was a wolf cub, you could decide these things by considering 1) who has the shiniest shoes? 2) who has got a straight woggle? 3) what would Baden Powell have done in this situation? 4) is it a cubby sort of thing to do? 5) clean fingernails? 6) is it the sort of thing a boy would be proud to tell his mother? Small wonder that in the great ping pong game of life, I felt I was playing with a cracked ball. |

Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Big Al Whittle Date: 28 Sep 06 - 11:29 AM I'd like to hear your song Tim. The approach sounded original. send me a cd. I'm sorry you didn't make it through, as you sounded sincere in what you were saying about writing something outside the accepted folky subjects. Who knows - it might be my sort of thing. I am doing a lot more stuff from outside writers these days. In fact there are a lot of songs I would like to do - but its coming up with a distinctive accompaniment. Something edgy..... Thats what brilliant about Mudcat - you meet kindred spirits. Did you hear that version of Alex Campbell's Been on the Road So Long - by Eric Geever, who apparently was Link Wray's bassman. It really makes it worthwhile trudging through those ghastly posts about - do you think it would acceptable if I ran the 15th and the Sixteenth verses of The Ballad of Tam Linn together. I suppose I should have marked your card about song competitions - theres usually an agenda. I remember one time I went all the way to County Galway to take part in some songwriting competition / festival. Anyway there was this Father Ted lookalike on the panel - obviously hated the English. Now bear its cost me several hundred pounds to get there, he marks me nought out of ten for musical ability and my song nought out of ten. as you know Tim, i am not a nought out of ten guitarist - whatever you think about my songwriting abilities. Don't worry pal - we live in a world where people think that Liza Carthy's nose stud is challenge to the tradition. Keep on, keeping on baby. |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Rasener Date: 28 Sep 06 - 11:40 AM Mike >>Les...you also know Phil.....from Louth... << Was that meant for me? Of course I know Phil, what the hell are you on about? |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Tim theTwangler Date: 28 Sep 06 - 03:22 PM He he he ! You are an most excellent guitarist WLD and your songs are PDG! I will send you a recording but it is not very edgy at all. I am afraid. That is why V likes to book you at MRFC and we all come to listen. V hows it hanging mate? I do have a song about a teachers life that is errrmmm catchy. But not very folky. |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Big Al Whittle Date: 28 Sep 06 - 04:50 PM love the teachers thing. bin there bought that t-shirt. sat on the edge of your bed in the morning - hating your life. are you a teacher? liked the second one also - although I detest anything about the 1st world war - well directly about it. So I'd leave that verse out.TheBand Played Waltzing Matilda blew me away 30 years ago - ever since then , everything else on the subject has felt like a free ride on Bogle's sensibility. To be honest - even Bogles other songs on the subject. It could be about a bloke on death row in America or Thailand.A little compassion for someone living in the here and now would be a bit more convincing. check out this guy, Steve Conway http://www.btinternet.com/~unclechristo/index.html He's just a genius at adding atmosphere to Vikki's songs. Ask Monsieur Appleton about edge - I'm sure he'll understand. he's a very creative guitarist. And you can't learn that from a book of tablature. A creative guitarist doesn't necessarily have to be a great technician - the guy working with Vikki Clayton at themoment has a very original mind, but considers himself more of a keyboard player. |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Big Al Whittle Date: 28 Sep 06 - 04:52 PM sorry ChrisConway - don't know who Steve Conway is. I'm getting like Trigger in Only Fools and Horses, I'll start calling him Dave in a bit. |

Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Tim theTwangler Date: 28 Sep 06 - 06:31 PM No am not teacher mate but is kind of you to say is ok. Is it ok for non teachers to........ He he he another long argumentative thread. Dick is excellent and I will ask him about edge but although I envy his playing and yours and strollins and well most people who play I would never want to play like any one except me. Which sounds very snotty but why would the world need another Al or Dick or John maybe a Tim is an ok thing to be. |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Big Al Whittle Date: 28 Sep 06 - 08:49 PM didn't say it was easy - you got to look for your own edge - like Billy Bragg. who would have thought of singing folk songs to a clash style guitar before him. anyway, as you say do your own thing. I think with guys like SJ and myself, we perhaps make it look too easy - perhaps because it is easy to us after we've played for such a long time. then our accompaniments can get formulaic. I know its something only in recent years I've become aware of - for various reasons. mainly because I was under pressure as pro musician trying to cover bases. as a retired old fart, I have more time on my hands and I can see these things clearer - at I hope I can. could be just another layer of dust on my myopia! |
Subject: RE: Write a song for Lincolnshire From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 28 Sep 06 - 10:44 PM Hey, you saying my playing's formulaic WLD? Gosh, thanks for the compliment mate - hmmmmm, f-o-r-m-u-l-a-i-c - I've always thought my playing style was repetitious crap! LOL! :-) S:0) |
