My Dad taught me poem:

"As I went o'er Ilkley Moor
I met me Uncle Martin
He said nowt,
and I said nowt
So we both agreed to parting."

Now all you need is a tune and some more verses !

All of which puts me in mind of a line from one episode of "The Last Of The Summer Wine" which has nowt much to do wi't' Moor, but says a lot about the north of England.

"D'ye see that chimney?" (indicating a tall disused factory chimney in the background) "They do say as 'ow, on a clear day, ye can see Manchester from 't' top o' that chimney."

"Aye.... there's allus a snag, ain't there."

My brother John Hanna M.A. a student of northern dialects for many years; told me the correct translation of 'baht hat'.

'WITHOUT ANYTHING = NAKED' - You do not catch cold on Ilkley Moor not wearing your hat, but you could almost certainly do so without wearing anything!

Bob Hanna.

It may be the spelling that confuses people - should it be 'baht aht' = without owt/ought = without anything?

ILKLEY D'AMOUR

(Les Barker)

Ilkley d'amour, le 'ill where the Yorkshiremen go.
Ilkley d'amour et j'ai been there with mon chapeau.

Wheer hast tha' been since the day that I je t'ai vu.
J'ai been to court Mary Jane, chacun à son goût.

Ilkley d'amour, le 'ill where the Yorkshiremen go.
Ilkley d'amour et j'ai been there with mon chapeau.

Sacré bleu, vous will catch thy dee-ath tha knows
Vous allez snuff it si vous allez sans chapeau
Ooh 't worms'll ate thee, les ducks mange les worms for their tea
Et nous mange les ducks, so nous will have eaten thee

Ilkley d'amour, le 'ill where the Yorkshiremen go.
Ilkley d'amour et j'ai been there with mon chapeau.

In some American churches, Baptist type ones, not the happy clappy sort, the hymn "While Shepherds Watch Their Flocks" is sung to the tune of Ilkley Moor Bah't 'at. Funny!

It's t'other road round, Guest. The words of Ilkley Moor Baht 'At were made up by members of a church choir and set to a hymn tune they frequently sang.

Every time this comes up (which is very often) someone always thinks the carol is sung to the tune of the song.
Except when a certain journalist screws up by wrongly identifying the carol he's trying to talk about.
Try sending in a question to Mojo asking what song is sung to the tune of O Come All Ye Faithful.

The tune (Cranbrook) was written by Thomas Clark, shoemaker of Canterbury, 1775 - 1859

One's enough;-) - and why are there no songs about Otley Chevin? - or are there?
You can go rock climbing at on Ilkley Moor - better to wear a hat though, cos you'll probably fall off - its so slippery and polished because of parties of kids being taken up routes on top ropes.

Hi Muppet Plenty of songs and stuff on The Hermit from the Mountain Ash Band all about the Hermit who lived on Ilkely Moor. The Hermit Pub is named after him.
You can get a copy of the Hermit HERE!

Bass Cooper has a Monologue about a Ghost Bus that Runs via Otley Chevin.
