Subject: RE: Santa Lucia Swedish concert scheduled From: open mike Date: 17 Nov 03 - 01:21 PM more background info on Santa Lucia, Nyclekharpa and Tim Rued info about Santa Lucia history: During winter, the Swedes, who live near the arctic circle with the long nights and short days of the northern latitudes, are very conscious of light, or the lack there-of. In celebrating this holiday, candles play a very important role: of bringing light. One the morning of Santa Lucia day, girls wearing a wreath of candles on their heads (these days usually battery operated) start the day by serving cookies and coffee to their elders. This Festival of Lights on December 13 is a reminder that the the sun will return again and the days will soon become longer . Ancient customs of Yuletide bonfires were held on this day . Some say the festival was originated in Sweden by Vikings who traveled south on peaceful trading expeditions to Italy and brought back the stories of the Christian martyr, Lucia. She lived in Syracuse, Sicily, from the year 283-304. Because of various traditions associating her name with light, she is the patron saint of sight and of the blind . MOre about Nyckelharpa-a Swedish instrument. The Nyckelharpa, also known as the Key Fiddle, is a stringed instrument which originated in Sweden, as far back as the __12th___Century. The oldest known instrument in existance was built in 1526. The history of the nyckelharpa is based in the Iron Foundries in the Swedish province of Uppland. The modern Chromatic instruments have 4 strings, which are played with a bow, and 12 sympathetic vibrating strings which pick up the vibrations of the bowed strings and resonate. The instrument is held similar to a guitar or other stringed instrument, held across and in front of the player. the notes are played by pressing on keys which in turn change the note that the string plays rather than pressing directly on the strings such as an instrument with a fingerboard might be played. Tim Rued has travelled and studied in Sweden. He has been awarded the medal usually only bestowed on native Swedish musicians. He has produced video and audio tapes featuring the nyckelharpa and teaches and performs on this and other instruments. He is also an accomplished fiddler, and has been one of those chosen to judge the local fiddle contest, the California State Fiddle Championship in Oroville, Calilfornia. |

Lucia here in Sweden is very big. Lots of nice young girls getting their hair singed! Read in a local (Swedish) paper that a class of school children were going to Italy and would be there during Lucia time. Planned to do the Lucia thing. Which would wake up the Italians as they don't celbrate Lucia in Italy !!! Chas |
