Subject: RE: BS: Doncaster ? From: BanjoRay Date: 07 Dec 03 - 07:25 PM I live in Doncaster. Not a bad town, with lots of new businesses starting up around a new lake, and an airport (which everyone wants) starting up shortly not far away at Finningley. House prices are very reasonable compared with most places. It's a good place to travel anywhere from, near the A1, the M1 and the East Coast main line. You can be in the Peak District National Park in an hour, the Yorkshire Dales or the seaside in around 2. There's a couple of folk clubs and at least one weekly folk session, loads of pubs and restaurants, and a superb racecourse (home of the St Leger, the oldest classic race). There's even a good banjo instructor (ahem). Hope this helps... Cheers Ray |

Subject: RE: BS: Doncaster ? From: mooman Date: 08 Dec 03 - 10:34 AM Herself the Good Lady McMoo hails from Doncaster and has provided good and dependable service over the past 25 years. So an affirmative for the denizens of Danum and, although getting more pricey now, it's still a lot better value for accomodation than many other parts of the UK. Peace moo |

Subject: RE: BS: Doncaster ? From: Dave Bryant Date: 08 Dec 03 - 11:25 AM Actually I have some affection for Doncaster, because I discovered one of the most enduring loves of my life there in 1961. The (then) National Coal Board used to run a weeks course during the Easter Holidays to try and persuade sixth formers that they might be interested in working for them, after they'd been to university and it was free, all expenses paid and sounded fun. It was the first time that I'd been away from home alone, and at sixteen and threequarters I wasn't in the habit of frequenting pubs - things were different in those days. I'd drunk shandy and even sampled the odd drop of bottled light and brown ales, but these were rather fizzy for me. We were put up in a pub/hotel called "The Elephant" in Doncaster and I can remember that the first thing that the Coal Board rep said to us when we all met up in the bar was "Who want's a beer". Draught bitter was a revelation to me and anything we drank was paid for by the NCB. We spent our days down various pits - Manvers, Siverwood and looking at surface plants as well, but it was definitely the beer that I enjoyed most ! |

Subject: RE: BS: Doncaster ? From: Bassic Date: 11 Dec 03 - 09:13 PM This is where I was taken in hand by the steward at my college club, (High Melton for those locals who know) told to stop drinking "puffs" drinks like Mc Ewans and become a man. I was initiated into the delights of Barnsly Bitter by John and his wife Brenda ("get yer feet of them poofs") who used to manage the college Rugby team with consumate ease every weekend yet still atract the lecturers, music majors, teachers and computer nerds into the same small bar and create a great athmosphere. Happy times :-) (Anyone else remember the Socialist Republic of South Yorkshire :-) |

Subject: RE: BS: Doncaster ? From: Dave Bryant Date: 12 Dec 03 - 06:07 AM I've just remembered the company which brewed that first pint, it was Hewitts. Are they still around - it seems unlikely or I'd have come across it since. When I got back home, I grew quite fond of the products of my local brewery, Beasleys (of Plumstead, SE18), but they got taken over by Courage and were quickly shut down a few years later. Brewery Road is still there though. |

Subject: RE: BS: Doncaster ? From: GUEST,MC Fat Date: 12 Dec 03 - 06:15 AM Hewitt's (or Spewits as it was sometimes called) have long gone Dave. They were a gGrimsby firm that I think first got swallowed up by Hammonds and thence onto the Bass group. |

Subject: RE: BS: Doncaster ? From: fat B****rd Date: 12 Dec 03 - 06:24 AM Hewitts !!!!!! takes me back to nicking empties from the "offo" and taking them back to claim 3d from the usually slightly pissed lady who ran it. Anyone remember Taddy's on Cleethorpes front ????????? |

Subject: RE: BS: Doncaster ? From: GUEST,Strollin' Johnny Date: 12 Dec 03 - 07:55 AM Hewitts ('Spewitts' or 'Grimsby Rip-Arse' as it was affectionately known in certain Trentside towns) was always a poor second to Tennants (a fine Sheffield brew, absolutely not to be confused with that Scottish poison 'Tennents'). The finest of them all, however, came from Brigg (of 'Brigg Fair' fame) - Sargents. All long gone and very sadly missed. Johnny |

Subject: RE: BS: Doncaster ? From: Dave Bryant Date: 13 Dec 03 - 04:37 AM Ah well it got me hooked on the stuff in the first place. These days I tend to drink it by the quart, though. |
