Not sure this is much help - but I was in Bowness a year ago and only found a Sunday afternoon session in the Irish bar (can't even remember its name).

As regards gigs, if you see Angie Palmer advertised go see her - contemporary acoustic music with style!

If you got a time machine please include me in your visit. I would love to visit the Lamplighter , Keswick again. C1967. I heard wild Rover for the first time there.

The Cockermouth Folk Club is the nearest to Loweswater, at the Wheatsheaf. Try a bit of a search. I would also find Fellside record company's site(they are Workington based, and a very well respected folk record label) and email the boss Paul Adams for advice. Good luck, hope you find something. I was going to be around there for Christmas, but Ive had a change of paln.

If you look up the "Reckless Elbow" web site http://www.reckless-elbow.fsnet.co.uk/ they are playing up there as follows :-

Sunday 28th December, Christmas 2003 in The Lakes
We're playing at our favourite Lake District pub, The Eagle and Child at Staveley, between Kendal and Windermere. Join us for informal fun, good food and great beer. Free, on about 9pm, until late. Check out the links page for the pub.

I dont thinkthe Lake District is a folk desert. I could make a case for it being one of the main repositories for a continuing tradition (unrevived) of folk music in the British Isles. However, I agree it is not a huge stronghold of "folk scene" type music.
There are, for example, a considerable number of performers/bands who play what can reasonably be termed "Cumbrian" music. Now that can not be said for a lot of English counties, I would have thought(though I'd be delighted to be proved wrong). The thing is, those performers are perhaps not the kind of people with the right kind of hair styles for the front cover of FRoots.

Whilst not exactly local to Loweswater, some friends and I are in Threlkeld for a few days (from 27th Dec to 2nd Jan I think). We intend singing songs, playing beer, drinking tunes, and walking and running up and down mountains...probably quite a lot of that. We'll probably be in the Salutation in Threlkeld a lot of the time, we're staying at the Blencathra Centre in Threlkeld.

Cheers,

John

Is there a regular folk club at The Eagle and Child, Staveley,Fruibowls Dad at work [what sort of a name is that?!] I am moving to Kendal and asked about folk clubs but the nearest I could find was in Milnthorpe. Maybe somebody reading this would be interested in helping to start one in Kendal.

Greg - I am intrigued by your reference to Cumbrian music.

We are hoping to spend some time in the area in January once Julie's CD has gone to the pressing plant (we'll need the break !) - any links to the performers you are thinking of would be appreciated.

I also lack a hair style for Froots, or any other magazine come to think of it!
