Well,not really the blues, but on the Mike Figgis film for Martin Scorcese's The Blues series ("Red, White, and Blue") there is Lulu doing a creditable job on "Cry Me A River" and some other song. Speaking of older women, she looks great (the last time I saw her she was making eyes at Sidney Poitier)! (Much better than Tom Jones, who should not have been in this film!) Can anyone British tell me if Lulu has done any recent albums of blues or equivalent?

Can't be too helpful but I saw Lulu (and Her Luvvers) at Grimsby mecca in 1964 and she did belting versions of Motown and the like. I would like to think that after all the success as an "all round entertainer" and boy band guest that she's back with a little more, well, "hip" material.

She's certainly still got a great voice. She was on UK TV this new years eve with Jools Holland. I don't know if there's any blues recordings in amongst this lot
but I would think, if she's made them, you'll find them here.

Thanks for the reference. I had no idea she was so continuously prolific all these years -- the Atlantic certainly muffles sometimes. It explains why she was so poised in the film.

Apparently Lulu has an album coming out soon. Don't know if it includes any blues though.

She sounded and looked great on Jools!

Cilla *is* making a singing comeback - new album recently released.

In a totally higher league vocally than either Cilla or Lulu, I reckon, are these two other ladies of the 1960s: Judith Durham and Helen Shapiro. These two know how to sing jazz and blues, no question ! If your last memories of Helen Shapiro is a teenager with a beehive hairdo singing "Walking Back to Happiness"...then do listen to her singing blues, jazz, gospel, and her Messianic Jewish albums such as "Kadosh". Wonderful.

Tom Jones knowledge of Blues surprised me, but I sure didn't like his delivery. Where was Joe Cocker in that episode?

Good question, Steve! I agree. Van Morrison on the other hand, was great (but then his cover of "Baby Please Don't Go" with Them was my intro to blues, so I am a tad biased).

Yeah, Van has always had feel. I would have liked to have heard more of Jeff Beck's acoustic playing too. It seemed that they talked over a lot of it.

You mentioned Judith Durham. You can still find her 'Judith Durham and the Hottest Band In Town, on CD. It's quite superb.

Yes, it certainly is the same Judith Durham. After leaving the Seekers she worked with her husband, jazz pianist Ron Edgeworth - who, sadly, died about 10 years ago from Motor Neurone Disease. She is still performing and writing now. See here: Judith Durham

I think she has a fabulous voice: strong, clear and totally versatile. She can sing equally well in all kinds of styles - to my mind, the sign of a really good performer... and she has certainly stood the test of time.
