Earl Scruggs turns 80 today. I think that it is pretty safe to say that Earl is probably the most influential Banjo player ever. So many people got interested in the banjo and Bluegrass after having heard his Foggy Mountain Breakdown on the Bonnie & Clyde Soundtrack, His Ballad of Jed Clampett and his theme from Petticoat Junction. His contribution to Bluegrass through his work with Bill Monroe and later Flatt & Scruggs is second to none. His book, Earl Scruggs and the Five String Banjo is considered "the" book for aspiring Bluegrass pickers.

Earl is still quite active.

Pete Seeger influenced many, but Earl Scruggs was and always will be the most well known banjoist of them all.

Overdrive is right. His early stuff with Monroe and then with Flatt is incredible. The Foggy Mountain Banjo Album/CD is considered a "Must have" by Banjo players. Rob McCoury, of the Del McCoury Band and one of the finest young banjo players on the planet was once asked for advice for beginning pickers. His answer was to learn every tune on Foggy Mountain Banjo. I am still aspiring to this. To heck with NOLA.
