One internet site is claiming that Dylan has AIDS, and this is the reason for his recent illnesses. Can anyone confirm or refute this?

Why are you so keen to know? If he does or doesn't, will it affect your attitude to his music? Or are you just being prurient? Enjoy the music, let the man live his own life in peace I say.

I'm keen to know because: a. I am interested in people as well as their music b. If it is true I would like to send a message of support, having had close friends who have died of AIDS c. If it isn't true, then the site which is putting it about needs to be told Satisfied?

I meant no disrespect to anyone, including Bob, who I revere as a minor deity. It's just that if he's sick (his health has never been great since his various drug habits and especially since that weird heart/lung problem he had last year) it doesn't matter what the disease is, I only hope that it's not serious. If he's dying, we will all pray and mourn in our own ways. "Bob Dylan with AIDS" sounds like nothing more than a tabloid headline. Besides, it's none of our business unless he wants it to be.

I love Bob Dylan,

Chet W.

Mystery solved - I think, I hope - I am glad to say. Mo, thanks for your message, and sorry if it came over aggressive. But I do not think we should question whether a thread should even exist, or where our interests lie. Any how . . . When I found the Dylan info on the net the page it was on had only a single line. It has now been added to considerably. It turns out to be by Alan Weberman, who is a self-confessed Dylan-trasher. He puts 'evidence' for his case of Dylan having AIDS, but it is, well, suspect to say the least. He revels in it. He - Weberman - must be sick, desperate, or both.

Don't worry about it Ian....you will find that the blowhards at this forum hide all their rudeness behind haughty language, they absolutely come unglued when you take the direct approach. My guess is , that with a name like Ian, you are a Celt and are used to more direct communication.

I personally found nothing in anything that you said objectionable or aggressive, but I too, still have my testicles.

geeze...Chet. Don't apologize for a joke! Anyone with a brain KNOWS it is a joke....why do you care about those that don't?

I think that calling me a smartass, however, was a nice, thoughtful touch. Off to my library to muse over dusty tomes of forgotten lore. Quoth any raven, nevermore?

Ian - glad it's good news! In return I'm sorry too if I came across as stuffy, it's just that as Chet pointed out, your thread did look a little "tabloid" and that doesn't seem to be Mudcat's style! Still, maybe I came across as a bit too prissy about it. By the way - Tinwhistler's Mutha - nice generalisation there! As I'm as celtic as you can get, where does that leave your "direct approach" idea? I could tell you - but that would be rude! (!) Cheers, Mo

I am in two minds as to whether to reply. I do think this thread has gone past its usefulness. But since you ask. . . Yes, I do like to be direct, yes I am a Celt, yes I do have a sense of humour, yes I do care about what happens to people, and having had three close friends die of AIDS, there are nevertheless some things I find unfunny. Like AIDS jokes. Goodbye and God bless, one and all. My intention was to find the truth, not to make jokes, to offend, or to - God help us all - appear tabloid.

From: Pete M

Well I originally avoided this thread because it seemed as noted above "a bit tabloid", but finally got here, and it's actually far more interesting than the title implies.

I'll do my two pennorth of stirring by adding that as someone who may be accused of using "haughty language", I do not repeat not use it to "hide rudeness" and resent the implication. One of the great strengths and joys of this forum is that for the, most part, we can all hold and share strong views on a subject without descending to inane name calling. Those who have to deal with me in the flesh would never I think, accuse me of being anything other than direct, but that does not mean rude, or that one must abandon formal English.

As for blaming your character deficiencies on your ancestry, I suspect that many English people have a celtic forbear, and many Scots / Irish / Welsh Anglo-Saxon. Add in Dane, Norse, Hugenot, Norman etc etc and the futility of ascribing racial characteristics, if such exist, to an individual becomes clear.

Right, having got that off my chest, if you find out where one can purchase lives Chet, let me know, I could do with a few in reserve for when this one runs down.

Haughtily - Pete M

You use a couple of archaic words and you think that you are some how demonstrating a more formal style of English than others. I suspect that it is in effort to hide the utter lack of substance in your argument. Strip away the olde English and the haughty indignation and what you have left is very shallow indeed.

As for character deficiencies.....it would appear that you own the franchise on that product.

Clearly, the statemant to which you alude was referring to cultural, not genetic, tendencies. And while such a statement is dangerously broad sweeping, it is not unfair to comment on cultural traits that make us all so very interesting.

Whistletosser/Mulligan,

1) If you have testicles, why do you hide behind two shadows? 2) The Scots are Scots, the Irish are Irish, the Welsh are Welsh, the English/Scot/Irish/Italian/German/French/Indian/African/I-Don't-know-my-granny-changed-her-name-but-I-wanna-be-romantic Americans call themselves Celts. Lurker,

I wasn't referring to Pete or Ian. If you will check the thread titled "Essential Irish Session tunes", will find that the same person who raised the "haughty" issue here, raised a similar issue in that thread. It got ugly and I am not proud to say that I let myself get sucked into it. Every so often I go back and read it to remind myself that a sense of civility and respect for others opinions is required in online communities, in order for me to get the full benefit of opinions of and discussion with others from many backgrounds, cultures and experiences. That is what makes the 'Cat such a treasure to me as a singer of songs.

I understand why T.M. said "i pull the strings and they all dance." All he had to do was say "they absolutely come unglued when you take the direct approach" and they oblige him by doing just that, as well as being haughty and insufferable. John, I hear that Paul Simon has very serious athletes foot...you can read all about it at www.drshoals.com. (perhaps its from those diamonds...)Even more noteworthy is that Art Garfunkel has dry scalp...(in his case that might be terminal.)
