And Happy 75th Birthday to Tin Tin (cartoon character) as well. I'm not sure of the exact date but it was only in the last few days.

Maybe Popeye & Tin Tin were twins.

Tin Tin, brucie. Not Rin Tin Tin.

Great. I share my birthday with 2 cartoon characters and Jim Carrey. Explains a lot, I suppose.

Of course there's also Benjamin Franklin and James Earl Jones, so that's not bad.

Then again, there's also Kid Rock and Maury Povich. Yech!

But on the other hand there's Natalia Jeanpierre. grrrrrowllllll...

Balance that with Anne Bronte. Boooooooring...

And there's....

Wow! On January 10 I suggested that we (i.e., the Library) buy the complete adventures of Tin-tin! And I didn't even know! Well, I really suggested that we buy them because I'd read them in French in college and....

As for Popeye, all I can say is that I yam what I yam.

Arf! Arf! Blow me down! I yam mighty pleased and proud to be hearin' from you scurvy swabs after all these years. Is that a tear in me one good eye? I wants ta say that I yam proud to be a hard fightin' sailor man who never done a wrong turn to a friend and never turned away from a lady in distress. I also paid for a whole lotta burgers I didn't eat, but it's okay...the money comes and goes, and it don't stay long in me sailor clothes. Arf! Arf!

Now stand back, ya swabs, whilst I yells out me favourite line:

DON'T WORRY, OLIVE! I'LL SAVES YA!!!

I yam what I yam and that ain't gonna change.

Popeye old ass, you are without a doubt one of the goofiest piece of crap cartoons ever done, your only saving grace being that hard line scrounger of scroungers, Wimpy. The Jeep was the dumbest gawddamn thing ever put in a cartoon along with Alice the Goon. So on this your birthday, many have used your famous line, "Blow Me Down," but if I may, I'll just cut the greeting a bit short and suggest that you Blow Me.

Listing, Catspaw, ya dirty sea snake! I's heard of you and yer vulgar ways enuff times already, and what I's heard ain't good. Yer a nationable disgrace. Steps out on my poopdeck, buster, and I'll smacks your silly face from here to Shanghai with one good punch, and not even sweat a little whilst I does it. You wouldn't knows a good comic if ya had it shoved up your left nostril and twisted! I got a good mind to come down to Ohio and straighten you out, sailor! Didn't your momma tell ya it's not nice to insults people on their birthdays? Where did you get brought up...in one of them little one-room shacks with a half moon on the door?

Original Popeye Theme Song
Written by Sammy Lerner

Chorus:
I'm Popeye the Sailor Man
I'm Popeye the Sailor Man
I'm strong to the finishk
'Cause I eats me spinachk
I'm Popeye the Sailor Man.

I'm one tough Gazookus
Which hates all Palookas
Wot ain't on the up and square
I biffs 'em and buffs 'em
An' always out-roughs 'em
An' none of 'em gits no-where.

(chorus)

If anyone dastses to risk
My fisk
It's Boff! an' it's Wham!
Unnerstan'?
So keep good behavior
That's your one life saver
With Popeye the Sailor Man.

(chorus)

Another one from circa `74:

Popeye The Sailor Man
written by Kinky Friedman & Panama Red

My heart is on my sleeve,
Do you still believe ?
Are you listenin' to the tide roll in, watchin' ships at sea ?
When I come sailin' home again will you be there for me,
There for me ?
Treasure ships of yore
Grace the ocean floor
Columbus sailed for Italy, Columbus sailed for Spain.
Columbus sailed a wishin' well, Columbus died in chains,
Died in chains.

I don't pretend to know every answer
To everything that life may ask of me.
Hey, I'm Popeye the sailor man
I'm Popeye the sailor man
Hey, Popeye the sailor man
And I sail the lonely sea eternally.

My true love calls to me from far across the sea.
She says, "Red skies in the mornin'
Sailor take warnin'
Sail with me tonight
Sailor's delight, sailor's delight."

I don't pretend to know every answer
To everything that life may ask of me.
Hey, I'm Popeye the sailor man
Popeye the sailor man,
Popeye the sailor man
And I sail the lonely sea eternally.

She said, "Popeye the sailor man
Popeye the sailor man
Oh, Popeye the sailor man
Sail on home to me, come sail with me."

And this old verse from elementary school:

I'm Popeye the Sailor Man,
I live in a garbage can;
I love to go swimmin'
With bare-naked women,
I'm Popeye the Sailor Man

Cheerily,

Shiver me britches! I likes that verse, Charley. Any bare-nekkid women that wants to learn me a new stroke or two is welcome to try...but don't tell Olive! She's a jealous one, she is. There'll be hell to pay if she finds out.

At the risk of injecting a note of sanity (or at least distraction)into these highly enjoyable reminiscences, can I ask you Popeye experts about the Jeep character?
I recall seeing the little dog-like creature who could walk through walls, turn invisible etc in early Popeye cartoons on TV as a boy. I also understand that the usual explanation for the Chrysler vehicle being called a "Jeep" is after "GP" for General Purpose vehicle, an epithet allegedly used to refer to the original Willys vehicle. Surely it's tempting to think that the car was actually named after Popeye's jeep - something that could go anywhere? Waddya think?

I always had a bit of a thing for Olive Oil myself.

Spinach is good for you though, lots of vitamin B in the diet. Sure he'll be goin another 75 cos of it.
I'm a veggie myself, so have watched his career with interest.

Have one on me popeye mate!

Thanks, Bobert. Popeye is one of my all-time heroes. So, what was he actually saying under his breath? Some pretty adult suff, I understand.

In one 1930's short, after being rejected by Olive Oyl, he says; "Awwww, I just ain't got no sex appeal!"
