Subject: RE: BS: Happy Birthday, Popeye!!! ....... From: catspaw49 Date: 17 Jan 04 - 11:40 PM Popeye old ass, you are without a doubt one of the goofiest piece of crap cartoons ever done, your only saving grace being that hard line scrounger of scroungers, Wimpy. The Jeep was the dumbest gawddamn thing ever put in a cartoon along with Alice the Goon. So on this your birthday, many have used your famous line, "Blow Me Down," but if I may, I'll just cut the greeting a bit short and suggest that you Blow Me. Spaw |

(chorus) Another one from circa `74: Popeye The Sailor Man written by Kinky Friedman & Panama Red My heart is on my sleeve, Do you still believe ? Are you listenin' to the tide roll in, watchin' ships at sea ? When I come sailin' home again will you be there for me, There for me ? Treasure ships of yore Grace the ocean floor Columbus sailed for Italy, Columbus sailed for Spain. Columbus sailed a wishin' well, Columbus died in chains, Died in chains. I don't pretend to know every answer To everything that life may ask of me. Hey, I'm Popeye the sailor man I'm Popeye the sailor man Hey, Popeye the sailor man And I sail the lonely sea eternally. My true love calls to me from far across the sea. She says, "Red skies in the mornin' Sailor take warnin' Sail with me tonight Sailor's delight, sailor's delight." I don't pretend to know every answer To everything that life may ask of me. Hey, I'm Popeye the sailor man Popeye the sailor man, Popeye the sailor man And I sail the lonely sea eternally. She said, "Popeye the sailor man Popeye the sailor man Oh, Popeye the sailor man Sail on home to me, come sail with me." |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy Birthday, Popeye!!! ....... From: Daithi Date: 22 Jan 04 - 10:01 AM At the risk of injecting a note of sanity (or at least distraction)into these highly enjoyable reminiscences, can I ask you Popeye experts about the Jeep character? I recall seeing the little dog-like creature who could walk through walls, turn invisible etc in early Popeye cartoons on TV as a boy. I also understand that the usual explanation for the Chrysler vehicle being called a "Jeep" is after "GP" for General Purpose vehicle, an epithet allegedly used to refer to the original Willys vehicle. Surely it's tempting to think that the car was actually named after Popeye's jeep - something that could go anywhere? Waddya think? |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Happy Birthday, Popeye!!! ....... From: Cluin Date: 22 Jan 04 - 03:25 PM Forgot about the Jeep. Maybe the etymology went the other way, Daithi. |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy Birthday, Popeye!!! ....... From: Peter Kasin Date: 22 Jan 04 - 10:50 PM Thanks, Bobert. Popeye is one of my all-time heroes. So, what was he actually saying under his breath? Some pretty adult suff, I understand. In one 1930's short, after being rejected by Olive Oyl, he says; "Awwww, I just ain't got no sex appeal!" |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy Birthday, Popeye!!! ....... From: Cluin Date: 22 Jan 04 - 11:20 PM Yep. The mumbling of Popeye were what I liked too. And I'm prretty sure Donald Duck was swearing blue streak too. |
