Subject: Tech: Acoustic guitar processor From: PaulBobbyBuzz Date: 26 Jan 04 - 01:42 PM I've been playing my Takamine forever, and can't afford to part with it. I'm in a band with 4 other guitar players, all of whom use effects of some sort(Beringer amps, BOSS AD-5). While I still consider myself somewhat of a purist, I like the sounds coming from the AD-5. However, being pretty much a pauper, I can't afford to go that route. Any suggestions on lower priced, yet quality processors? I know price doesn't always equal best quality, and also that you get what you pay for. But I'm trying to move on this and still be able to make the house payment! Thanks for any and all advice. pbb |

Subject: RE: Tech: Acoustic guitar processor From: s&r Date: 26 Jan 04 - 05:46 PM With five guitars it must be hard to tell whether effects are being used or not : ) Try looking thru hot deals here http://www.netzmarkt.de/thomann/thoiw2_index.html?sn=2c6f7612644cd1e751ac3d5083c7bcc5 or buy a fiddle.... |

Subject: RE: Tech: Acoustic guitar processor From: GUEST,Cluin Date: 26 Jan 04 - 08:21 PM I use an EQ pedal for leads, as well as a distortion pedal more rarely. Used to have a chorus pedal too but as I wasn't using it, I sold it. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Acoustic guitar processor From: UB Ed Date: 26 Jan 04 - 09:58 PM PBobbyB, what music are you playing? Are you playing out or just among yourselves? For my acoustic I will sometimes add a chorus for additional texture (Long Black Veil; Kilkelly) and for the lead an EQ for the boost. Otherwise I run straight thru the board with house EQ and just the smallest touch of reverb. I play a Lowden and a Martin. The electric has a distortion box, flange, echo and (thank God) a tuner. Sometimes a wah. I play a Les Paul Custom and SG. Small Fender tube amp mic'd to the PA. Seriously, 5 guitars? Is that a redefinition of Phil Spector's wall of sound? Ed Ed |

Subject: RE: Tech: Acoustic guitar processor From: Grab Date: 27 Jan 04 - 08:03 AM I've got a Korg AX1500G digital FX widget (cost £160). Dead cheap, and does everything you're likely to need. Obviously it's really aimed at electrics, but it's also very usable for acoustics. It doesn't have some of the acoustic-specific stuff like feedback prevention, but otherwise you can get a hell of a lot out of it. Enough storage for every sound you're likely to want, and several footswitches to select between them (instead of the crap "up/down" system). The wah is crap, but you won't want that for acoustic anyway. Oh, and it's got the best user interface ever. To give you an idea of how good: for something with this many options, the manual is about 10 pages long, and even that is OTT. And it's built like a brick shithouse so it's basically indestructable. Subject: RE: Tech: Acoustic guitar processor From: PaulBobbyBuzz Date: 27 Jan 04 - 09:52 AM Thanks for the input. Actually, we get nice separation because everyone has a different style guitar, and the various amps and effects give us a variety of textures. The true wall o' sound comes from our 7 voices!! But back to the topic...a friend suggests that maybe the pickup in my 20 year old Takamine has become "brittle"(his word), and maybe we ought to approach replacing the pickup with a sound-hole installation (Seymour Duncan, et. all), wiring it through my existing volume control, so I would still have the ability to adjust volume at the guitar. Any thoughts? Thanks pbb |

Subject: RE: Tech: Acoustic guitar processor From: mooman Date: 27 Jan 04 - 11:48 AM I have a programmable modelling guitar pedal (Digitech RP 50) but find it introduces too much noise for acoustic guitar (even using the built-in noise gate) so it's relegated now to electric guitar. For my acoustic and jazz guitars I have reverted to using my old Boss digital echo/reverb and chorus pedals plus a Boss A/B pedal all of which are noiseless through my acoustic guitar amp. I have a couple of basic settings for each which are easy enough to remember and tweak "on the go". The Boss pedals are, however, on the slightly pricey side. Peace moo |

Subject: RE: Tech: Acoustic guitar processor From: UB Ed Date: 27 Jan 04 - 03:21 PM Boss pedals are pricey, but in this instance you do get what you pay for in durability... I don't know about "brittle" pickups. Is it under the saddle? Perhaps it is "primative"? Might you replace it with a Fishman? |
