O.K., I know this site is for folk songs but I know many of you would enjoy the song, The Eagle, by Hap Palmer and Martha Chaney. This is a wonderful song basically about freedom. I have used it in our outdoor ed program and this year when the elementary school choirs (3 of them) combined for the World Largest Concert in celebration of Music In the Schools Month (March) we choose to sing this song and I got to direct it. What an indescribable feeling to hear 94 studnets united, what power. As a lot of you know I am retiring after being in the teaching field since '65, mostly teaching elementary music. Anyway, at the end of the song one of the other teachers took the mic from me, I was the MC for the evening, and the music teachers presented me with 19 beautiful roses, one for each year I have been at Moffat County and in keeping with the mood of the song, "set me free" to fly away. The audiance stood and the choirs cheered. Boy did the tears roll. I am so excited to turn this page in my life but will miss my time with the students. Thanks for letting me share this with you, it's just too special not to. bet

Wow, sis, the tears are flowing just reading about it. Wish we could've been there! You deserve all that and much more. I am sure they will miss you a great deal, but as you say, your next move is SO exciting!!

Oh, and, how about posting the words for us?

luvyabunches,

kathleen

Consider that as an eagle flies, it is from one place to another. Retirement need not be a death. It can be a progression.

Now, how does the song go?

Remember that life is a journey not a destination!
Congratulations on completing this leg of the journey! I am sure the kids will really miss you. I remember my kindergarten and first grade teachers fondly (I'm only 37 so its not too taxing on the faculties).

For the rest of ya'll

Eagle and the Hawk (as sung by J. Denver)

I am the Eagle
I live in high places
In rocky cathedrals
that reach to the sky

I am the hawk
and there's blood on my feathers
but time is still turning
and soon they'll be dry

Come dance on the west wind
and sail o'er the mountain tops
down through the canyons
and up to the sky
Reach for the heavens
and hope for the future
and all that we can be,
not what we are

I have always found this song to be inspirational and exhilerating

I'll talk to kat tonight, maybe she can tell me how to do the melody but here's the words.   It is recorded on Palmer's, Witches Brew tape.

Born for a western sky, sweepng a circle as he flies.
He was free__ when they let him be.__
Brave and a hunter's son, the land was his 'till he met a gun.
He ws free __ when they let him be. __

In a land without a friend,__ will there be an empty sky
Where the eagle used to fly__ in the wind?______

There on a mountain high, wounded eagle wants to die.
He was free__ when they let him be.__
Dreaming of days gone by, _ when little children watched him fly.
He was free __ when they let him be.__

In a land without a friend,__ will there be an empyt sky
Where the eagle used to fly in the wind?

Born for a western sky, sweeping a circle as he flies.__
He was free___   when they let him be.__
He was free___   when they let him be._________

Wonderful, Bet- and congratulations!

...I don't suppose you transcribed the song into notation, now, didja? Or, like, arrange it for elementary chorus, or any such thing, hmmmmmmmmmmmm?????

Hoping....

Bet,

You,like me,actually liked our jobs! You can't have a much better gift than that in this world.

I've gotten my disability retirement, but,I think I have a somewhat more bitter attitude about it than you do.

All my best

W.E.

Congratulation Bet! The tears you haven't seen are the tears of the parents and other teachers when they hear the voices of their little ones singing. Thank you so much for teaching them to love music.

To this day, my heart fills with joy at the sound of my own children singing. There is nothing quite like it. As a teacher, I have been moved to tears many times when the Jr. Choir performs at our school. I know the kind of dedication it takes to teach music. Thanks again.

Since my sister is not really the "retiring" type, I thought you all might like to see this older thread which tells what she'll be doing NEXT!

Sorry, I haven't learned abc notation, but I'll get the sheet music, scan it, and use one of those translators or get a midi of it, from bet, if possible and post it.

katburstingmybuttonswithpride..she my Big Sis!!:-)

To all of you, thanks for your kind words, this is all very humbling.
ChiefChaos, I love you name! Indeed life is a journey and I'm moving on............
brucie,   "lots" of thanks...
Animaterra, If I ever get things figured out I'll send you what I have. I've been thinking of arranging the song for Orff. If I do I'll send it to you. I do have piano acc. etc. for it but that is all right now.
Walking Eagle - You are right, I can't imagine spending my adult life working at somethng I didn't love!
Sttaw Legend .. I'm still flying hi from the other night but yes the eagle has landed
Allan, I really didn't think they would react the way they have.
open mike... I am really honored to be mentioned in the same sentence as Mr. Holland's Opus. I 'm not that great.   One of my highlights in life has been to attend the opening premere' of the movie, Wow! was that ever a kick!!!
dianavan... I still have the tears when I think about leaving this school but I'm not leaving music, I'll find some kids in Alaska though I don't think I'll sign on for a full time teaching job. Thanks for those words.
kat.. what can I say to you except thanks for it all. You always support my ideas, find my answers to songs and other stuff, and try to keep me up to date on this cumpter thing. I'm proud to call you my sister

I just sent off some music to kat, she is going to try to scan it for all of you. I had to do it in 3 pages because my brother has my directions to Print Music and I couldn't remember how to make more measures. If you can't figure it out let me know, I'll do somethng different. bet

Ah, thanks, bet. I got the email okay, but have to download a small program in order to open it, so will try to do so tomorrow, then see if I can figure out abc or something to get the tune posted.

I can almost smell those roses!

i see this thread is way old...that sucks cuz I kinda want someone to read this...but oh well.

I am 16 years old - i just stumbled upon this website while looking for the lyrics to "the eagle" (born for a western sky) that song is so beautiful! I wanted to know the lyrics and hopefully find like...a cd or something on youtube of it being sung in that beautiful melody. I cried watching my sister's class perform it in elementary school. She's 3 1/2 years older than me..this was some time ago. I really really would like to know if there's a cd or something with this song being sung professionally or the tape that the kids sing over...ooh..
I'll keep looking, but if anybody reads this - could you take the time to send me an email?
I'm at Paul_Reba@hotmail.com
thank you to all the music teachers in the world! as a present student, I appreciate all that you guys do.

That is wonderful to hear, Paul. Thanks! I have sent you an email with the information about the Hap Palmer CD and where you can hear a snippet of it. Good luck!

Here's the CD or download, whichever one wants:

Witches Brew and here's the mp3 snippet of The Eagle.

Paul,
My sister told me about your response on The Eagle. I am at school right now but will look when I get home and see about the whole song. I know I have it somewhere in all my stuff. Seems there is something special in that song. When I moved to Alaska I was needed at a school on Eielson Air Force Base (20 miles from Fairbanks). They were desperate for a music teacher. I took the job and taught 2 more years plus 2 months of music . I am "retiring" again from teaching music next Friday.   Guess you could say I'm going to be "free" again.
Anyway I'll see what I can do.

bet

Congratulations
Goodby Mrs. Bets you already know that the fine music teacher is the most fondly remembered of all the teachers he had.

I went to college for Music Ed but veered into esoteric pursuits so I vicariously enjoy your work and transition very much.

Enjoy.

Don.
