Subject: RE: Free Alaska folk albums for downloading From: Ebbie Date: 10 Apr 04 - 10:56 PM The song about falling dollars that Pat alludes to is one he wrote when the Oil Pipeline from the North Slope to the port at Valdez brought so much money to Alaska that the atmosphere was insane. From the Henry and Banghart (Bobby Heartbanger) link: "I don't remember which (festival) it was, but it was probably the eighth or the 10th or something like that," Henry said. "And that year one of my fresh songs was about $100 bills falling from the sky." "We got (son) Hiram an old bag, a burlap cash bag, and put a dollar sign on it, and we filled it up with $1 bills that were folded into airplanes," Katie Henry said. "(Daughter) Katie and I were singing, and Hiram was throwing these dollar bills into the audience," Pat said. "And I thought that was pretty cool. After a while people realized they were real dollar bills, and they started passing them on while the song went on. The air became full of flying dollar bills. I carry that vision in my head." Thanks, Mark Sabbatini. |

Subject: RE: Free Alaska folk albums for downloading From: Ebbie Date: 11 Apr 04 - 02:01 PM I wish this thread had a different name (No offense, Mark S!) It might be better if it had reference to next week's folk festival. It might also be good to mention that KTOO, a local PBS affiliate, will stream the stage activities. |

Subject: RE: Free Alaska folk albums for downloading From: Art Thieme Date: 12 Apr 04 - 12:03 AM I didn't see my friend Paul Roseland listed as performing. I do hope he is well and still active. Please give him my regards. Art Thieme |

Subject: RE: Free Alaska folk albums for downloading From: Ebbie Date: 12 Apr 04 - 12:58 AM Thanks for checking, Art! I noticed too that he's not listed. But sometimes he misses a year. He was here last year and looked and performed well. If he didn't get his application in on time, he'll be on stand-by. Almost every year they eventually get everybody in. If we see him, we'll tell him you asked. Elva B |

Paul and Diane have been good friends for many years. I even played guitar on one of Paul's albums. Next time I see him I'll tell him you said hi. Mike |

Subject: RE: Free Alaska folk albums for downloading From: Art Thieme Date: 12 Apr 04 - 08:00 PM Paul Roseland has an absolutely great bunch of folksongs in his rep. He and I have been swpping tapes and CDs for many years. I've never met him but I love his music. "30-ought-six On The Wall" that he does is a beauty---and there are so many more. His CD of miner's songs and another of cowboy songs are grand collections. He doesn't sing like anybody else I've ever heard. A unique artist. Art Thieme |

Subject: RE: Free Alaska folk albums for downloading From: Ebbie Date: 13 Apr 04 - 03:42 AM Thanks, gargoyle. Jack Fontanella puts in a lot of time on that website. FYI, at www.ktoo.com they're streaming the whole festival, from 7:00 Alaska time- 4 hours behind New York- to about 10:30 PM this week. On Saturday and Sunday there are also afternoon stage performers from 12:00 to 5:00, in addition to the evening performances. Tonight, the highlight of the evening to my mind was the Zahasky family plus a friend's additional harmony singing with them on a gospel song. |

Subject: RE: Free Alaska folk albums for downloading From: Ebbie Date: 20 Apr 04 - 12:52 AM Well, the Alaska Folk Festival is over for another year. The AFF is the only event in my life that is a long time coming- remember when Christmas time seemed so far away? That's how it is with me and the AFF. It is a magic time- packed with stage acts, songwriter showcases, greeting old and new friends from last year and jamming. Always jamming. Jams in the corners, back rooms, foyers, street corners, homes, restaurants and bars. Our guest artists this year were the 'Hot Club from Cowtown", an absolute crowd-thrilling threesome, each on the pinnacle of anyone's playing and singing. http://www.musicaustin.com/swing/hotclub.html: "Whit Smith on guitar and vocals, Elana Fremerman on fiddle and vocals, and previous bassist Billy Horton {now Jake Irwin, the most astonishing slap-bassman you can imagine) named their band after their hero Stephane Grappelli, whose collaboration with guitarist Django Reinhardt was called the Hot Club of France. "They have combined the Western Swing of Bob Wills with the hot stylings of Grappelli to create a youthful sensibility married to a traditional music form. " aaaaghhhhh |
