Subject: RE: Re: Rum and Shrub From: Dipsodeb Date: 01 May 04 - 04:42 AM I was recently introduced to Rum and Shrub by Hawker. I don't know about the lime and sugar the drink that I had was particular to the West Country and is only sold there as far as I know. It was invented by a gentleman who's name escapes me (sorry) to disguise the taste of salt in the rum that had got into the barrels as they were smuggled ashore in the days of yore. It is made from a secret blend of herbs and spices and is a alcoholic tonic 5%. It takes the burn out of the rum and a few of them makes you very happy. Dipso by name Dipsomaniac by nature and Rums my poison so I'd definitely recommend it I will also give the lime and sugar one a try sounds good. ;-)) ~Debs~ |

Subject: RE: Re: Rum and Shrub From: Hawker Date: 13 Dec 04 - 06:42 PM Shrub, according to the label - and I quote! is 'an alcoholic cordial made by Phillips of Bristol, distilled from Devon herbs & spices using J R Phillips secret recipe, handed down through the generations as a timeless classic and still one of Devon's most popular imbibes. Shrub is just one of a range of seven uniqueflavours, originally used in Cornwall during the old days of Rum smuggling to disguise the taste of the sea waterlet in during the perilous journeyof barrels from ship to shore. Shrub is still Rum's perfect partner@ there, that is what it is! They also make a cordial called Lovage - traditionally drunk 2 parts Lovage 1 part Brandy as a soothing winter warmer (and a real settler for an upset stomach in our household!) For more info J R Phillips & Co. Ltd., Bristol BS13 8AR And Mr Phillips if you read this can I have 20 bottles of shrub for plugging your company!!!!!!! Cheers, Hic Lucy |

Subject: RE: Re: Rum and Shrub From: Micca Date: 14 Dec 04 - 04:06 AM Some of our American Cousins now know what Rum and Shrub taste like. I took a few hip flasks to the Getaway suitabley filled and passed them around. I have had severeal requests for supplies of Shrub, and with reference to Ebbies post above, It was suggested that it was the only way most of those I met would let the terms "Rum and Shrub" pass their lips, and it was certainly the only way in which make "Rum and Shrub" were palatable!! |

Subject: RE: Re: Rum and Shrub From: My guru always said Date: 14 Dec 04 - 05:56 AM Wonderful stuff Rum & Shrub, very glad that Micca took some to the Getaway & intruduced our US cousins to it!!! Think Gervase was referring to the practice of 'hot toddies' as a comforter for the dreaded cold, it works for me. |
