Subject: BS: Colin and Dick From: Nerd Date: 30 Apr 04 - 04:33 PM Let me be clear: I am NOT making this up. First of all, for our catters who may not be exposed to US news reports, I should point out that Colin Powell pronounces his first name unconventionally; it is pronounced as "colon." So, according to Bob Woodward's book, Colin Powell and Dick Cheney are not on speaking terms. In refuting this assertion, Powell is quoted as having said: "When the Vice President and I are alone, it's Colin and Dick." Ooh, I didn't think they were THAT friendly! |

Subject: RE: BS: Colin and Dick From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 30 Apr 04 - 08:22 PM Slightly more sophsticated, but in the same vein - from a story in the Guardian today about the political scene in the UK. It explains how Tory leader Michael Howard's life history doesn't really add up to a good "arc" - "An arc in the vocabulary of political consultancy is a coherent over-arching 'story' about a politician's personal and politifal 'journey'. " The term for this I've heard normally is "narrative" - and I suspect there's a reason the other word was chosen here by the journalist, Patrick Wintour. He points out how Michael Howard has to leave out a huge chunk of his life, from the 1960s to the 1990s, in constructing his "arc". And this gets him to the conclusion: "This leaves, Labour strategists suggest, a big hole in his arc." |

Subject: RE: BS: Colin and Dick From: GUEST Date: 02 May 04 - 02:13 PM Colin Powell's parents used the British pronunciation of his name, since they were from Jamaica. When they arrived in the States, the pronunciation got changed to accommodate the locals in New York ... not an uncommon practice in the States. Try Basil and Bernard for further variation. Cheers, Brian |
