Just used the Super Search and found Summaries for each posting *hit* that came up. Somebody's (JEFF!?) been busy! Wonderful, though a bit wordy in some cases (what to do with old Birks thread:-).

Thanks, very much. It just keeps getting better!

Interesting. Not exactly a summary, simply the first few lines of the post, but it works well enough as a summary if we wrote a good topic sentence! It also gives the author and the date with that text, which is tremendously helpful if you're trying to find something you wrote ages ago. I just did a search on "Ellis Island" that we've been discussing recently and found it easy to find the really germane posts. Thanks for pointing this out, Kat! And thanks, Pene Azul or whoever worked on this!

I'm trying to figure out what limit Jeff set on the length of the summary. It looks about right to me - enough to get an idea what the message is about. But it doesn't seem consistent: sometimes it's two lines, and sometimes four - but however he has it set, it works nicely. Oh, I suppose it's not really a "summary" - "excerpt" might be a more precise word. But since it's an excerpt that's presumably taken from the beginning of a message, you have to have a reasonably-sized chunk of the message so people can get the gist of the message.

I'm prejudiced, but I think it's perfect. Nice work, Jeff!

Yes I've noticed it too - it's very useful. Is the reason that Mudcat's been so slow, because Jeff's been testing out this new feature ?

the internet in general is very slow lately - worse today then it has been. our clients are screamin' blue murder - and we've complained to our service provider - but there isn't much anyone can do about it...

good stuff...!!! I hadn't actually done a search in the last few days, so it didn't quite dawn on me how far it had been improved, but a quick test shows me it works very well indeed...

Now...I STILL don't understand what it means to sort a search by 'relevance' as opposed to 'date'. I suppose it ranks the words according to some sort of frequency rather than just in order of posting.

I think "relevance" ranks them according to how close the word match is, between the search term and the posted message. (Cowpie has it too.) So if I search for HAMMERING I will get a higher relevance rate on HAMMERING and a lower one of JAN HAMMER, and probably a still lower one on RUSTY HAMER, but since there can be so many spellings of a word, and misspellings, the search gives us all of what might work so we can dig as deep as we care to.

That seems right to me. Doing relevbance with one word is easy enough. Using synonyms or germane terms would be another thing altogether.

Is there a way to turn the summaries off ? Sometimes they are useful, but at other times they just take up screen space.

yeah - there are lots of "I wishes" - but in the long run I would rather have the summaries then not if it has to be one way or the other. I'd also prefer to have ALL the responses on a single page - rather then paginated (but I know I'm wierd that way) and some other things that in the long run don't really matter.

The search feature is still about 7000% better then any other I have used with any other forum
