Subject: Help me find a poem..... From: emjay Date: 08 Jun 04 - 03:03 PM Many, many years ago in school in New York State, my husband heard a peom with the lines, "The golden rod is yellow and the corn is turning brown." I have searched Bartletts quotations, and other books. I hav elooked on the internet. I have read through countless books of poetry but I have never found this. There are so many Mudcatters, I have confidence that someone among us will know this poem and I can finally have an answer and we can go on and discuss really great poems like my favorites. You know, ones like, "It was the schooner Hesperus that sailed the wintry sea..." |

Subject: Lyr Add: SEPTEMBER (Helen Hunt Jackson) From: GUEST Date: 08 Jun 04 - 03:19 PM September Helen Hunt Jackson The goldenrod is yellow; The corn is turning brown; The trees in apple orchards With fruit are bending down. The gentian's bluest fringes Are curling in the sun; In dusty pods the milkweed It's hidden silk has spun. The sedges flaunt their harvest In every meadow nook; And asters by the brook-side Make asters in the brook. From dewy lanes at morning The grapes' sweet odors rise; At noon the roads all flutter With yellow butterflies. By all these lovely tokens September days are here, With summer's best of weather, and autumn's best of cheer. |

Subject: RE: Help me find a poem..... From: Stilly River Sage Date: 08 Jun 04 - 03:37 PM As you can see, there is a big difference between searching on "golden rod" and "goldenrod." Here is an interesting site that came up when I seached on your first few words. SRS |

Subject: RE: Help me find a poem..... From: emjay Date: 08 Jun 04 - 04:33 PM I can't believe I did put golden rod but I know it's goldenrod! I wonder if I did search with that mispelling. (That's the first mistake I've made, I'm sure.) |

Subject: RE: Help me find a poem..... From: Sandy Paton Date: 09 Jun 04 - 01:16 AM I'm assuming that you all know of H. H. Jackson's two most widely known works: "Ramona" and "A Century of Dishonor", the latter being a scathing history of the U.S. Government's trashing of one treaty after another with our native Americans.
