OK, after nearly 2 years of unemployment filled with networking, schmoozing, applications, a few interviews (none at all in calendar year 2003), and no job offers - I start a job in marketing that I can do partly from home, partly from Alexandria (@ 2 hours away), on Monday. How did this miracle occur? Well - I'd been doing some freelance marketing here and there around Cville, and went last weekend to a trade show with a client. Client helped a caterer set up by lending a dolly for the keg, so caterer invites us to sample excellent French food. People whose party was being catered were really cool, and traded free massage (what client does) for free food, and in the chatting, turns out they are a publishing company, and I asked if they were hiring, and they hadn't been thinking of it but decided to hire me as they don't have anyone in my exact area... So, the moral is, jump right in, or maybe always carry the keg. Anybody else just fall into something?

Yes, I did fall into something really great once. I had submitted an application to the Tulsa Zoo for a position as a zookeeper. In the meantime I took a job as a veterinary assistant at a privately owned animal hospital, and my application stayed in the file at the zoo. About nine or so months later I got a call from a guy who identified himself as the director of Tulsa's brand new (and first ever) nature center, and he asked me to come in for an interview. Turns out that the nature center director got my application from the zoo file because they were both run by Tulsa's municipal government. (And as it turned out, it was the job at the nature center that helped me eventually get the job I wanted at the zoo, so I guess I fell into that one as well.)

It was a fantastic job, even though it hardly paid anything. But I got paid to watch birds and collect wildflowers!

Congratulations!

I'm still working on my potential full time employers. I may have a temp freelance gig with one of them -- I've received their house style book, but so far no actual work. There's a few other good leads in my future -- I just have to believe the right job will happen at the right time.

For the past three years since I was laid off from the printer I had worked for for 10 years, I've been combining freelance with part time jobs. No benefits, no paid time off, no security, and -- in the case of the p/t gigs -- not a heck of a lot of money.

But hard work in the job search pays off -- congratulations again, and best of luck in the new job!

CarolC: Let us know if you find any folk in Tulsa ... used to live there and OKC but folk wasn't exactly the thing (but there is a subculture of music, apart from C/W that you'll find): you'd get some interesting events at the "Cain's Palace/Ballroom."

Thanks Brian. I left Oklahoma in 1978, and I've only been back once for a couple of weeks since then to visit an old friend. I've been told that OKC has a thriving folk music community though.

Best of luck in the new job -- hope it either is or you can turn it into what you really want. Most of all, I wish you a good employer who cares about his/her employees, good and cheerful co-workers and a workplace with no politics or games.
