Subject: BS: PLEASE defend the JUG
From: GUEST

G'day,

Some of the comments about 'old time' el-cheapo folk instruments have me drooling. In fact I'd be dribbling in my jug (if I still had it). 'Twas a one gallon (UK) capacity glass jar, with a 'finger loop' alongside the neck, and a mouth diameter of ca 1¼". Original contents were sulphuric acid - which leads to Bluey Brink.

OK - old juggies and skifflers - (Gus Cannon excluded) - come up with some yarns and links. My first thought is - what was better for acoustic resonance in a jug?

Glass or earthenware?

Prooopppp (or somesuch)

Cheers - Sam

Have you tried a semi-demijohn?

If the jug is full, it is impolite not to share with your neighbors... (sulphuric acid or not)
if it is empty, it is full of music...
Ernest

You have me tittilated and tittering - go wash your grubby mind with a jug of sulphuric acid....

LOL - Sam - who seems to be re-baked

I love the sound of the Jug and the twelve string guitar. The jug really underlines the string-tuba quality of the twelve. The only icing on that sort of cake is a well bent blues harp. It needs no defence! besides, I've not heard any jug-jokes yet.

I used a soft plastic milk container at St Albans this year and it made a very acceptable sound.

My favorite is earthenware, brown glazed, with a loop, not any precise measure but looks a bit under a gallon. No clue what it was used for initially. I do know it has been filled with moonshine plenty of times. Pairs wonderfully with a wooden flute (cedar) or recorder (pear). My uncle and his friends said it wouldn't sing if it wasn't refilled from time to time.

I'd defend it to the death if it had good ale in it.
