Hello Don,
The Houghton Weavers come from a town in Lancashire (UK) called Westhoughton, which is North West-ish of Manchester and between
Wigan and Bolton.

I have a couple of albums of theirs, "Howfen Wakes", (the word howfen
is local dialect for Westhoughton and the wakes were the annual
local holiday week), and "Sit Thi Deawn".

I take this information from the (very sparse) sleeve notes on
Howfen Wakes, I can't find the other album as yet, it may have more
information on it than this one has. This was recorded in 1976 by the
way.

If you would like more information or track listings of these albums
let me know and I will try to provide it, though I'm sure that if
Dave the Gnome, Noreen and many others see this you will be swamped
with lots of answers to your questions.

Best wishes, and I hope this helps a little

Fieldvole

They've recently reissued some of their old vinyl albums (there were 6 or 7 of these in the 1970s/80s) on CD, including their very first (Howfen Wakes). They're good entertainment if you see them live, although some would probably consider them a bit on the 'easy listening' side of folk music. They do perform a lot of Lancashire material, as well as a lot of Irish stuff (tends to be the Rose of Tralee type stuff rather than traditional). They don't seem to write a lot of their own material (at least, they didn't used to) and tend to cover other artists songs mostly (although Norman Prince penned a few). Nevertheless, I first heard several good songs from them which led me to 'discover' other artists through them.

Steve was admitted to hospital early yesterday having suffered a stroke! 54 years old, what a bummer!
Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
