Subject: Folklore: 1905 Fenris the Wolf book in auction From: katlaughing Date: 19 Aug 04 - 03:56 PM As this is a play based on Scandinavian mythology, I think it qualifies as "Folklore." Anyway, I've just put it in the auction and thought you all might want to read more about it: Click Here There's also a new "Y" necklace up for auction - garnets and goldtone chain. Thanks, kat |

Subject: RE: Folklore: 1905 Fenris the Wolf book in auction From: mack/misophist Date: 21 Aug 04 - 02:37 AM I suppose this question should be asked here. Does the book mention Fenris's sister Hel, the dutiful daughter? If I get it, it would be a present for Fenris's namesake. He would want to know but he can't read. |

And I don't think Hel would consent to be a part of the pack. She has her own role to play. Where do you think earthquakes come from? |

Subject: RE: Folklore: 1905 Fenris the Wolf book in auction From: mack/misophist Date: 22 Aug 04 - 12:15 AM Since you obviously played truant from Sunday School, Dear Lady, I shall tell you how earthquakes are made; to save you the trouble of asking. Or not, as it may be. When the Aesir discovered the trick which Loki had played on Baldur with the mistletoe, they resolved to punish him. Rather than chain him to a mountain top in the Caucasus, they chained him to the floor of a cave, deep under the earth. Rather than set an eagle to tear his liver, they placed a serpent on his head, to drip venom down upon his face. Perhaps because his daughter Hel is queen of the underworlds, they were unable to prevent her from interfering. So she crouches always at her father's head, catching the venom in a bowl she holds. But in time the bowl fills, and she must leave the cave to empty it, lest it run back upon her father. While she is gone the venom falls full on Loki's face, and his writhings shake the earth above. Thus it is reasonable to say that Hel is the direct cause of earthquakes, though they are not her fault. This must have happened after Tyr fed Fenris, for Fenris has no part in the tale. |
