Subject: BS: Nameless thread From: GUEST Date: 12 Sep 04 - 04:10 PM From BS: Is anonymous posting to be encouraged?"Did you try using the Mudcat during the time when all the names were done, GUEST Date: 12 Sep 04 - 02:35 PM" "I did, and found it incredibly refreshing McGrath. Enjoyed it immensely. For the first time ever since I've been here, we had a level playing field." Right then, here is a level playing field once more. I suggest that everyone p[osting to this makes apoiunt of doing so as an unnamed GUEST, and let's see what happens. |

|
Subject: RE: BS: Nameless thread From: GUEST Date: 13 Sep 04 - 10:45 AM The lack of content in this thread is a direct consequence of the namelessness of posters here. It demonstrates that it is in fact necessary to have some kind of indentity marker on posts as a general rule, other than just the name and date. So long as most people do sign in, however anonymously, the occasional nameless GUEST is just a minor irritation, but if we all did it in all the threads, it would very rapidly destroy the Mudcat. Who'd bother to come here? One practical side of it which hadn't really struck me is the sheer inconvenience. Normally, if you post to a thread and then close it, when you open it up again, you can go straight to your last post, and read on from there and find what has happened. But without names you're lost, especially if you've been away for a few days, and the thread has grown. Since the thread is here, how about someone who normally posts as an unnamed GUEST on the threads in general using it to give some hint as to what their reasons for choosing to do this might be. "I do it because I can do it" isn't really much of a reason, since we can all do it, and the result isn't that interesting when we do all do it, as this thread demonstrates. And please accept that this is not an unfriendly request - this is something that I am sure has puzzled a lot of people. If there really are reasons other than a desire to cause irritation to other members and GUESTs, disclosing what these might be would perhaps make the practice seem less irritating. |
