Subject: Poorly Cat Newsflash!
From: Hawker
Date: 22 Sep 04 - 05:02 PM

Hi,
Cats thought I should post a daily update on here on how my little cat Tipsy is doing. He came home last week with his leg hanging off, we assume he had a run in with a car, but it may have been something more sinister such as a trap. He had to have his rear right leg amputated. He was very weak at first, but is now enjoying being hand fed, spoilt rotten and is mobile again, a little slower, but he made his way to the top of the stairs yesterday and has even managed to climb into the dogs bed and cuddle up with him. He also suffered an alergic reaction to the anaesthetic, which made his skin very inflamed , especially on his front leg where it was injected, but that too is healing now. His wound was weeping a little today, but is clean and dry in the main. So we are hopeful for a trouble free recuperation, though knowing this cat, that may not be the case, for it there is trouble, you can guarantee Tipsy will be there! I will try to keep you posted on his progress.
Cheers, Lucy

Poor little fellow! But the good thing is that most animals adapt very easily to being amputees. They don't agonize over it psychologically - they just get on with things! Best wishes for Tipsy.

Hi Lucy,

Sorry to hear about Tipsy. Rest assured that he'll manage quite well without that leg. One of our cats, Bibi, had to have a rear leg amputated 4 years ago due to cancer in the leg muscle. It was only 2 months before she went down stairs on her own. She was able to handle going up the stairs much earlier than that. Expect a bit of frustration on his part as he gets accustomed to the leg not being there. Bibi would topple over or misjudge a jump and hiss like crazy out of pure frustration. That has pretty much gone away over the years. She has regained her post as queen of the household, lording it over the other 2 cats and we 2 humans (her staff).

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions or need a bit of emotional support. Believe me, they recover much faster than any human would. In fact, the vet said that he considers them to be 3-legged animals with a spare.

Give my best to Tipsy (really appropriate name now, don't you think?)

jeffp

Hi - sending mine in yours and Tipsy's direction. My dog broke his elbow in several places three years ago and had to have six operations altogether. He was 11 then, 14 now and, at times, we htought he'd have to lose the leg, which might have meant putting im to sleep - he probably was too old and other legs wouldn't have been able to support him.

However - he is back and more fit and cheeky than he has any right to be - God love him

May you and yours have the same good fortune as we did with ours

Blowz

Healing thots and then some to Tipsy. Our huge half Siamese/half wild cat years ago managed to hunt, take off for days, keep all other cats off our 60 property and bring down rabbits as big as he, without the full complement of legs. When he'd take off in the inter time we'd sometimes track him in the snow...his tracks were distinctive.
I think it is a huge help in healing that animals don't suffer the same pangs phsychologically. Their ability to accept things as they are and make the best of them without a thot of self-pity or the awareness of courage always blows me away.

Hey, Hawker:

I expect your kitten will do fine. I used to raise racing pigeons when I was a teenager and one of my pigeons had the lower half of one leg taken off in a rat trap that my Father set in the garage. The leg healed with very little treatment (and pigeons aren't renowned for their cleanliness,) and I ended up winning a couple of races with the pigeon.

Animals adapt well, in a way that humans might not. Maybe that's why cats have nine lives and four legs to start with.

Jerry

Hawker,

Healing thoughts, trilling and prancing coming at ya and Tipsy from myself and my buddy cat Hans, the giant twelve-pound five-month-old wimp. :) I'm sure Tipsy will be a terror around the place soon enough. ;)

Hi Lucy

all my best wishes to you and to Tipsy. My cat Baxter had a leg amputated 14 years ago after a run in with a dog. He is still limping along fine, although getting a little arthritic now. He and I send you and Tipsy best wishes.

Hi, Thanks to you all for your kind wishes to Tipsy, he is grateful to you all. Wow! what a lot of feline and canine amputees out there, I feel a lot better hearing that they all get along so well! Tipsy took a turn for the worse today when his wound started oozing again, we went back to the vets, he is back on antibiotics and has possibly got an infection. The vet gave him a 'lampshade' thing to wear to stop him licking it, but when we got home he really freaked out, to the point of making himself sick, though that may have been the car journey too. I took it off and cuddled him, it took an hour for him to stop shaking, He has however just devoured a bowl of minced turkey, so I think he is feeling better! I will have to put the lampshade back on later but maybe he will be less traumatised then as he will not have been in the car or at the vets! His twin brother, Shadow, by the way is blind, and Tipsy has been his eyes since birth, so it has affected them both, though our Staffy Hawker has been a brilliant companion to Shadow, never leaving his side and cuddling him. This morning all 3 got together for their 1st group hug since the operation. Just keeping our fingers crossed now
Cheers,
Lucy

Prayers for cats? I'm sure God has time to install a new leg on your critter, why, he has time to work that in between the human prayer requests. Where is the prayer chain when you need it?

Let's all pray real hard.

All together now 1-2-3

It's a Miracle! God Bless little Tipsy

Update on Tipsy....
He has regained his wilful character, his ability to sit on the kitchen table, chase and catch birds, climb trees and we even caught him climbing a ladder last week. Thank you all for your kind thoughts, we get very fond of our furry friends, some of us, and they are like a part of the family. It meant a lot to me.
Debi, any news of your brother? I sent kindest thoughts, hope his outcome was as good.
regards, Lucy

I'm not surprised, Lucy. Cats are absolutely amazing critters. They don't let anything keep them down for long. All the best to Tipsy and all your family.
