How about "Saddam has something to do with the attacks on the World Trade Center."

Bush is intellectually bankrupt. There are so many lies. And his lies are costing many nations dearly. Not just the U.S. Who would have ever thought that there would be brutal beheadings of kidnapped victims from America and other nations happening anywhere in the world before Bush came into office? It's a direct outcome of his sorry-ass attitude toward the rest of the world.

Gosh... (and looking into an imaginary box of chocolates) ...it's so hard to pick just one...

How about "Saddam poses a grave and immediate threat to the safety of the American public... a threat that is sooooooooooo scary... that we need to start a premptive war for the first time in the history of the United States".

Or maybe the follow up...

"You'll thank us for it later"...

Amos, Amos, Amos...

You are way too obsessed with Bush! Hey, sure is is a lieing crook. Sure, he'd roll his own mother unner the bus. Yeah, he is pathological in his lieing. And, yeah, he's rather tell a lie than tell the truth.... but...

..hey, there's more to life than this crook. Really. Okay, when was the last time you just sat beside a creek and watched the water flow by? Or watch the squirrels in the park? Or take a day off and go to a rod & custom show?

Hey, according to Vegas, the chances of the United Sates surviving another 4 years of Bush and his lies are 7 to 5... Hey, that my friend, is better that 50/50....

So put on yer happy face, take a deep breath (cannibus enhanced) and all is well...

well, I read a lot of those, and since I am in this debate with bearded bruce about lies, I MUST be careful what I say. Many of the points in the links Amos gives can not be 'proven' to be lies, although many of them sure 'quack like a duck'...

What my position has been all along is that some people get the trick of lying to themselves ummm...deceiving themselves?...whatever- to such a fine art that they manage to really believe the most outrageous and far-fetched things.....and this, to me, is even more dangerous than outright, bald-faced lying. Nixon so managed to convince himself that his 'enemies' were hiding stuff and conspiring against him, that he allowed crimes to be comitted, and THEN had to resort to ordinary lies to cover it up.

All those complaints about Bush and his cronies noted above convince me that at least SOME of the crap they spewed were lies, but mostly they are guilty of corrupt morality which leads to 'false statements' as they try to justify their self-serving pettiness.

I'm only going to dip into this to a limited extent. I have yet to find that Bush told 'one true lie'. He and (most) of his crowd can point to misleading information and honest motivation as far as I can tell.

If you can point to a hard LIE by the definition of the term, please do so. Ranting on what he should have known, might've known, coulda but didna, will be ignored. I might agree with you on those, but they ain't lies.

From: Amos

a) "The smoking gun could be a mushroom cloud." Iraq didn't even have shitake mushrooms.

b) "Saddam would not let the inspectors in." Bush has now made this claim twice. It came as quite a surprise to the hundreds of U.N. inspectors that were in Iraq in 2003 and were told by the U.S. to get out or get bombed.

c) Iraq has weapons of mass destruction. All right, I cut them some slack on this one as EVERYONE thought that he still possessed some WMD capability. The difference is that no one else felt that Hussein was any sort of credible military threat to the rest of the region, much less the United States. And, by "no one" else, I mean C.I.A., the U.N. and anyone else not named Wolfowitz, Rice, Libby, Rumsfeld, Cheney or Pearle.

d) "We know exactly where they are." So said Rumsfeld shortly after the war ended. I wonder if he's shared that bit of information with his boss yet?

e) The laundry list. Both Bush in his 2003 State of the Union speech and Colin Powell at the United Nations read through a laundry list of horrors that was quantified down to the milliliter. Powell called these charges "facts" that were unassailable. Yet we have still not found a drop.

f) "We believe that, in fact, Saddam Hussein has reconstituted nuclear weapons." Dick Cheney said this on Meet the Press in 2003. Even as Bush and others were careful of going overboard, Dick "Goebbels" Cheney kept going for not just the Big Lie, but the Grandaddy of them all.

g) Drones that could attack the United States. True, if they were launched from Padre Island. The truth is that little Timmy down the block has a more sophisticated remote control airplane than Saddam did.

h) Yellow cake uranium. The Italian press thought those documents were fake. Let me repeat that: the ITALIAN PRESS thought they were forgeries!

i) "We will be welcomed as liberators". Those are bullets, roadside bombs and RPGs, not roses fellas.

j) Imminent? Who said imminent? Well, Ari Fleischer, Donald Rumsfeld and others. But, apparently Bush never said the words himself. He just used every other phrase he could think of to scare the crap out of us. And, as a point of order, isn't it the Bush Administration? When someone is speaking for the administration, don't they speak for Bush?

k) "Al Qaeda and Saddam had close ties". Well, both he and bin Laden are Sunni Muslims, they both have moustaches and, to quote Cliff Clavin, neither of them have ever been in my kitchen. They must be like brothers.

l) "We have found WMDs in Iraq." Bush and others have made this claim regarding an ever so dangerous weather tracking truck.

m) "They could have been destroyed by Saddam. Or moved out of the country." I know Bush doesn't read the papers or watch the news, but does he even listen to his own staff? David Kay, his hand-picked inspector, said there obviously weren't any weapons in the first place. But, what if Bush is right and they were moved, shipped out of the country? Well, then the whole purpose of the war -- to keep Hussein from giving his WMDs to terrorists -- was a failure. Well, George, which one is it?

ON THE ECONOMY:
GEORGE BUSH: "[W]e will not pass along our problems to...other generations."
THE TRUTH: $1.9 trillion in new debt over 5 years, with deficits continuing thereafter.

ON TAX CUTS:
GEORGE BUSH: "The tax relief is for everyone who pays income taxes...Americans will
keep, this year, an average of almost $1,000 more of their own money."
THE TRUTH: Nearly half of all taxpayers get less than $100. And 31% of all taxpayers get nothing at all.

ON SOCIAL SECURITY:
GEORGE BUSH: "[W]e continue to work together to keep Social Security sound and reliable."
THE TRUTH: The costs of the Bush tax cuts exceed by 3 times the entire projected shortfall in Social Security.

ON JOBS:
GEORGE BUSH: "Our first goal is...an economy that grows fast enough to employ every man and woman who seeks a job."
THE TRUTH: Bush is the first President since Hoover to preside over an economy that has lost jobs, not created them – more than 2.9 million since 2001.

ON THE ENVIRONMENT:
GEORGE BUSH: "[My] Clear Skies legislation...mandates a 70% cut in air pollution from power plants over the next 15 years."
THE TRUTH: The Bush plan will allow more than 100,000 additional premature deaths by 2020 than alternative legislation developed by the Environmental Protection Agency. The plan does not regulate carbon emissions and allows far more sulfur and mercury emissions.

ON EDUCATION:
GEORGE BUSH: "[W]e achieved historic education reform – which must now be carried out in every school and in every classroom."
THE TRUTH: Bush cut $8 billion from the promised funds for education.

I'm not here to plug for 'W' but I sense some throbbing arteries and not a few tremulous facial tics. A severe misdirection or lie on the part of Rumsfeld and Cheney is not the same (to me) as a hard 'W' lie. Plus, if he believes it, it ain't a lie, whether it's right or wrong.

Time to get a grip or as one American politico, name withheld because I forget said, "Sometimes you've got to grab the bull by the tail and look the situtation squarely in the face!" If you want to enjoy the next four years, let's hope that West Wing gets renewed because it's gonna be President Bartlett that gets us through!

"A severe misdirection or lie on the part of Rumsfeld and Cheney is not the same (to me) as a hard 'W' lie."

It is to me. Especially repeated lies, like Cheney's assertions that Iraq and 9/11 are linked. Bush is the commander in chief; the buck's supposed to stop with him. How can he run a country if he can't keep his Vice straight? Don't answer that; I know.

(Of course Mr Rumsfeld is responsible for Abu Ghraib, but not accountable, a wonderful concept. and a fine precedent.)

And, too, if - shall we say "false statements" - kill you is it ok if it's only a laughable mistake?

Robomatic,

You do not run for President of the United States and then plead stupidity abnd the inability to tell good data from bad as an excuse for promoting distortions of facts. "That's what I was told and I believed them" isn't good enough in that role. Hell, I can barely get away with it as a Nobody! Sheesh. If it isn't bald lying then it is raving dumb-shit hit-with-a-stupid-stick thickheadedness. It would be kinder to think he was lying to protect an oil-industry conspiracy.

Maybe he himself didn't lie but his staff and cabinet members have. and as stated above, He is the president and he is responsible. he appointed the lying s.o.b.s to their positions. Misdirection ect is just another form of lying. I expect our politicians to lie, it's the type that wants the job. What i find reprehensible is the fact that he went to war either out of ignorance orhate and sold a bill of goods to the American people (or tried to) and got over a thousand of our young men and women killed. Most of them, I might add, after "Major combat is over" (his words.) Indict the bastard for over 100 counts of crimanlly negligent homicide but for the sake of the nation don't reelect him!
