Subject: Lyr Req: The Sample Song--Dorothy Shay From: MadHamster Date: 28 Sep 04 - 08:34 AM I hope you can help me. Dorothy Shay had a song by this title in the 40's. My mother ( 72, half-blind and computer-illiterate) asked me to find the lyrics for her on the 'Net as I had a number of other old songs. Unfortunately when I've Googled (and Altavistaed, and Yahooed and other search engined :) ) it all I've found are MP3, Sheet Music and CD sites. The song, as I remember it from my mother's long-ago 78 collection, describes the unhappy effect of Shay's relatives bringing home samples from work. A typical verse: "My (Somebody) works in a pretzel factory Attendin' to Bendin' I'm thirsty, it seems, Even in my dreams 'Cause he keeps nringin' samples home" Other relatives worked in a patchwork factory ("My clothes are a sight/ Purple Pink and White") a bedspring factory ("I have to admit/ I'm afraid to sit") and a doughnut factory ("I've sampled doughnuts/ Till I go nuts"). The final verse is: "My uncle worked in a money factory (Line Missing) I heard a man say That he's gone away 'Cause he kept bringin' samples home." I did find a version of it about a year ago on a kid site (minus the last verse), but now that Mom's interested in the lyrics, that seems to have vanished! ;) |

Subject: Lyr Add: THE SAMPLE SONG (from Dorothy Shay) From: Frank Maher Date: 01 Oct 04 - 10:11 AM Here it is... My papa works in a pretzel factory, Attending the bending. I'm thirsty, it seems, even in my dreams, Because he keeps bringin' samples home. My grandma works in a patch-quilt factory. She matches the patches. My clothes are a sight: purple, pink, and white, Because she keeps bringin' samples home. And there's my silly cousin Willie. He makes doughnuts all day long. I sample doughnuts till I go nuts. No wonder I sing the sample song. My uncle works in a money factory, Inspecting, collecting. I heard a man say that he's gone away, Because he kept bringin' samples home. And there's my busy ol' cousin Lizzie, She works makin' cheese all day, And how her cheeses kill the breezes, For you can tell where we live a mile away. My brother works in a corkscrew factory, Assisting the twisting, I have to admit, I'm afraid to sit, Because he keeps bringing samples home, sweet home. He keeps bringing samples home. All the best, Frank |
