Subject: BS: Waht Do You Worry About? From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 01 Oct 04 - 12:35 AM On another forum I use, some folk seem worried about a nuclear explosion. I know there is dangers etc, but I don't really worry about terrorist attacks, nuclear war, enviromental disasters etc. can't see the point, if you sit there worrying you'll just end up scaring yourself, and nothing bad wil probably happen anyway. |

Subject: Lyr Add: I'M SO WORRIED (Terry Jones/Monty Python) From: Jeanie Date: 01 Oct 04 - 03:40 AM Here is my favourite song on the subject of what a pain in the backside worriers are - to themselves and others. Very therapeutic whenever attacked by worry. It has a highly suitable moaney, whiney tune, too, going round in circles, just like the worries. I'M SO WORRIED Words and music by Terry Jones Sung by Terry Jones on "Monty Python Sings" (1989) I'm so worried about what's happ'ning today in the Middle East, you know, And I'm so worried about the baggage retrieval system they've got at Heathrow. I'm so worried about the fashions today; I don't think they're good for your feet, And I'm so worried about the shows on TV that sometimes they want to repeat. I'm so worried about what's happ'ning today, you know, And I'm so worried about the baggage retrieval system they've got at Heathrow. I'm so worried about my hair falling out And the state of the world today, And I'm so worried about being so full of doubt About everything anyway. I'm so worried about modern technology. I'm so worried about all the things that they dump in the sea. I'm so worried about it, worried about it, worried, worried, worried. I'm so worried about everything that can go wrong. I'm so worried about whether people like this song. I'm so worried about this very next verse; it isn't the best that I've got. And I'm so worried about whether I should go on or whether I shouldn't just stop. I'm so worried about whether I ought to have stopped, And I'm so worried because it's the sort of thing I ought to know, And I'm so worried about the baggage retrieval system they've got at Heathrow. I'm so worried about whether I should have stopped then. I'm so worried that I'm driving everyone round the bend. I'm worried about the baggage retrieval system they've got at Heathrow. - jeanie |

Subject: RE: BS: Waht Do You Worry About? From: jacqui.c Date: 01 Oct 04 - 03:53 AM As a result of reading Neville Shute's book 'On The Beach' at age fourteen, shortly before the Cuba crisis I worried about the threat of nuclear war for a good few years, particularly after my children came along. To save my sanity I worked out that there are two kinds of worry - those you can do something about and those you can't. If you can do something about a problem, do it, hence no more worry. If you can't, what's the use of worrying? It may not work for everyone but it does for me. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Waht Do You Worry About? From: Georgiansilver Date: 01 Oct 04 - 04:19 AM What's the point of worrying? Do something about the things you can and wait to see what happens to the things you can't. Find something to put your faith in and believe all will work for good eventually even if things seem to be going wrong now. Best wishes. |

Subject: Lyr Add: DON'T WORRY; BE HAPPY (Bobby McFerrin) From: JennyO Date: 01 Oct 04 - 09:09 AM Don't worry, be happy Don't Worry, Be Happy - Bobby McFerrin Here's a little song I wrote You might want to sing it note for note Don't worry, be happy. In every life we have some trouble But when you worry you make it double Don't worry, be happy. Don't worry, be happy now. Don't worry, be happy. Don't worry, be happy. Don't worry, be happy. Don't worry, be happy. Ain't got no place to lay your head Somebody came and took your bed Don't worry, be happy. The landlord say your rent is late He may have to litigate Don't worry, be happy. (Look at me -- I'm happy. Don't worry, be happy. Here I give you my phone number. When you worry, call me, I make you happy. Don't worry, be happy.) Ain't got no cash, ain't got no style Ain't got no gal to make you smile Don't worry, be happy. 'Cause when you worry your face will frown And that will bring everybody down Don't worry, be happy. (Don't worry, don't worry, don't do it. Be happy. Put a smile on your face. Don't bring everybody down. Don't worry. It will soon pass, whatever it is. Don't worry, be happy. I'm not worried, I'm happy...) |

Subject: RE: BS: Waht Do You Worry About? From: Blowzabella Date: 02 Oct 04 - 06:12 AM I'm with jacqui c on this - there are enough things for me to worry about that I can do something about. If I also spent time worrying about things I can't do anything about, I wouldn't even be able to do anything about the ones I can have an effect on...see what I mean... I have a lot of lists that I have to add things too - cos I worry about not remembering to do things - I'm a bit of a perfectionist, but easily distracted and with a not-perfect memory - hence the lists...then I worry about losing my list... |

Subject: RE: BS: Waht Do You Worry About? From: kendall Date: 02 Oct 04 - 08:49 AM Why does worry have to have a point? There are things that threaten us and we worry. That's how it is. Subject: RE: BS: Waht Do You Worry About? From: Little Hawk Date: 02 Oct 04 - 12:01 PM Yes, Susan, you could say it was an experiment. Spaw had done it with weird stuff like Paw & Cletus & Cleigh O'Possum, so I figured "Why not try William Shatner...a real living, breathing icon?" It tooks guts and perseverance, but I did eventually turn Shatner into a Mudcat icon. :-) What's really weird about it is...in the process I actually did become much more of a William Shatner fan than I had been previously. This was partially due to finding out more about him, and partially due to reading his autobiography, "Get a Life", which really is a delightful book. I have to say that old Bill is, in his own strange way, a pretty cool guy. |

Subject: RE: BS: Waht Do You Worry About? From: katlaughing Date: 03 Oct 04 - 03:19 AM Even though it's a little old-fashioned, I highly recommend a book by Dale Carnegie entitled, HOw to Stop Worrying and Start Living. There are lots of used copies at Amazon where you can also scan some of the pages of the book. www.abebooks.com has a lot of copies available, too. A friend's dentist recommended it to her; she told me about it, I checked it out from the library and found it quaint but full of good solid advice and practical suggestions. kat |

Subject: RE: BS: Waht Do You Worry About? From: GUEST,Clint Keller Date: 03 Oct 04 - 11:38 PM I worry about most everything. I realize this is bad, but saying "Don't worry about things you can't do anything about" is about as effective as "Don't think about a hippopotamus for the next three seconds." Or as effective as telling a depressive to snap out of it. As far as I can see you can't command feelings. Persuade, maybe, but it'll take a long time. clint |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Waht Do You Worry About? From: jacqui.c Date: 04 Oct 04 - 02:43 AM Clint - it does take some time to change your mindset that way. I know because I did it. You need to be able to recognise when the negative thoughts are coming in and, if they are about something you can't, at that time, change then to push them out and replace them with something pleasant or productive. With some practical worries this seems to lead to the subconscious working out a solution to a problem. It may sound trite or difficult but I've been doing this for over 30 years and all I can say is that it works for me and I've had quite a number of reasons to use the technique in that time. |

Subject: RE: BS: Waht Do You Worry About? From: GUEST Date: 04 Oct 04 - 05:20 AM What jacqui says is right - not worrying about things you can't do something about does not stop you being concerned about them or thinking about them.
