I haven't used this resource since August. It seems to have disappeared. A new location? Discontinued?
I don't recall any announcement here, unless it was while I was on vacation.
If it has gone, it is a great loss.

With luck, it's just a temporary absence; certainly it was his family's intention that it remain available. Perhaps the old subscription has expired, or something like that. Easy to overlook things of that sort when dealing with someone else's estate.

I confess that some time ago I made a copy of the entire site, just in case something went wrong; and I expect a good number of others did the same. The work Bruce put into it won't be lost, whatever happens; but, as I say, I would think this is only a temporary problem.

I visited the site within the last week and it was there then, but doesn't seem to be there now.

If the site is no longet there, it does not mean that it has been totally lost. There is a website which attempts to archive content from web sites just to guard against this happening. It is callled The Internet Archive.
It ahs proved useful in the past when other sites have been having problems. It contains snapshote of a web site on specific dates in its history - just paste the URL into its search box and click! - you can look at old versions of Mudcat even...

if anyone needs it, I have the whole thing saved to disk in HTML format, so you can browse it just like it was in its final form...It was mostly text, so it is not really a huge file.

As noted, it may resurface in another spot one of these days, also.

this is powerful program, and there are a number of options & settings, so it 'may' intimidate the timid user, but the most basic settings to get Bruce's site are not that complicated...it makes a good addition to your 'local' copy of the Digital Tradition..(you DO have that, don't you...*grin*)

I have never been able to get my local copy (downloaded several times) of the DT to work as it keeps giving an error that the files are corrupted when trying to install it - asked for help many times before.

Can anybody tell me if there is an easy way to copy the Olson site from the Wayback archive? I tried a couple of apps (Webwhacker, Surfoffline) but they got stuck at the index page. I'd be grateful for any tips.

I'm pleased that you have found my link useful. There have been several times since I discovered the Wayback Machine when I have found it invaluable.
The Internet Archive also has other features worth investigating. For instance, there is a vast collection of recorded music freely downloadable - with permission of the performers - ranging from the Grateful Dead through to weird "indie" bands. There seems to be a lot of bluegrass music included, amongst other stuff.

I didn't want the whole site I only wanted to save the abc's.
This was easy to do and was saved perfectly well by highlighting text and using CONT C,
I then dropped it into wordpad (and word processor prog will do) using CONT V.

I have now tried HTTrack. It's a fabulous piece of freeware and I'll use it for other things, thanks for the tip, but like the other apps I also tried, it can't get around the structure of the Wayback site which seems to have rerouted all the links. Has anyone any suggestions? I want to make an offline copy of the whole Bruce Olson site.

Dunlace...I 'think' I can upload it as a zip file, so it can just be UNzipped on your computer....I just 'opened' my copy by clicking on the folder name in my file manager program, and it showed me a splash screen of HTTrack, and then opened it in my default browser...I will assume that a copy should do the same there.

I am having trouble today with VERY slow cable connection- possibly due to wind & weather here. I will do the zipping of the files, and upload it as soon as speed is back up.

The entire thing, being almost all text, is only 8.91MB, so it is not terribly hard to get.

Last I heard, there was talk of archiving the site at California State Universtity, Fresno. The Traditional Ballad Index is also kept there. I don't know if Bruce's family have decided yet.

Well, it took over an hour for somebody to find it, and then wouldn't ya know it was Jeri. I think she's some kind of Mudcat Royal, or something.
Anyhow, it's listed in QuickLinks, and it's also here (click). You'll note that it's optionally available without the Mudcat logo. That's for people who want to save the file as an HTML or text page, without graphics.

Hi to the Mudelves - I see that this thread has resurfaced because the ongoing spam attacks have added a spam posting. I think it is a thread which might be of interest to people who weren't about when it originally appeared. When you delete the spam, why not leave it in the active forum with my posting rather than let it drop back into the depths with the old dead threads.

Actually, recent spam attacks have brought to light a number of interesting "Old Threads", but if nobody adds new postings, the mudcat elves just spot them and delete the offending spam. When this happens, the thread sinks back into the depths of Davey Jones's Locker and most of us are not even aware that the spam happened.

As for this specific thread, I thought that it deserved to be seen again for a couple of different reasons.
One is that people such as myself ( who actually contributed to the thread ) have short memories. I had forgotten about Bruce Olson's web site, and that a copy of it had been archived within Mudcat. I had forgotten that it is a valuable resource for the material collected together by Bruce and put into an internet friendly format.

Second reason is that anybody who was not on the web in 2004 is unlikely to even be aware of Bruce Olson and the web site he maintained. Mudcat newbies may find it contains something which is exactly what they are looking for.

Thirdly, a lot of people are not aware of the "Quick Links" drop down menu on the Forum Home page so would not spot the link, or not actually visit it. This reived thread might just spark off fresh interest. The links takes you to Bruce Olson's Website (Hosted on Mudcat).
