From: John M.

This is from a telephone "field recording" of John Frushour. He learned this in the early 1950's at Indiana University.

Hanna, My Delta Gamma

Hanna, my Delta Gamma,
She's got a figure like a baby grand piana
She's not so nifty, she weighs two fifity,
But fat girls now and then are relished by the best of men.

Oh Hanna, my Delta Gamma,
I put my arms around as far as they will go, go, go,
Oh, I don't care for pretty faces,
All I want is Hanna's graces,
Hanna my Delta Gamma!

You can listen to a low quality public domain mp3 of the song here: http://tinyurl.com/5nhky (61KB)

This song is very rare. I have only found one reference to on the net (See here: http://tinyurl.com/4okf3). I interviewed the window of the Paul Schifferli the author of that online book. She confirmed the tune and remembered some of the lyrics (Listen here: http://tinyurl.com/4ovof (57KB)).

If you wish to use any of these mp3s on mudcat, I have made it public domain and John Frushour & Deborrah Schefferli have both agrred to the public domain issuance of these recordings.

Sincerely,

John Patrick Mehlberg

Some versions (not so different) on the net:

(1) Anchors Online - Delta Gamma Song Lyrics

Hannah

Well, well, well, Hannah
My Delta Gamma
She's got a figure like a baby grand piana
She's kind of nifty
She weighs two-fifty
But fat girls now and then
Are cherished by the best of men
Well, well, well, Hannah
My Delta Gamma
I'll put my arms around as far as they will go, go, go, go, go
I don't care for other faces
I just go for Hannah's graces
Hannah, my Delta Gamma!

(2) The Straight Dope Was the melody of The Star Spangled Banner taken from an old drinking song

You want to use the lyrics above for a singalong, more power to you. But in my heart they'll never replace, "Oh Anna, my Delta Gamma, she's got legs like a baby grand pianuh."

(3) Delta Gamma, Kappa Chapter Hannah

"Well, well, well, Hannah! My Delta Gamma..."

The idea of Hannah first surfaced in an old vaudeville hit, "Hannah from Indiana" by R.H. Wilson (who would later become a DG dad). The familiar Delta Gamma song, "Hannah," has been sung since the 1930's

(4) Children's Songs Part Two

Hanna The Delta Gamma
From Cally Soukup's mother (who was a Pi Phi)

Oh, oh, oh, Hannah
My Delta Gamma
She's got legs like a baby grand piana.
She ain't so nifty.
She weighs 250.
But fat girls now and then are cherished by the best of men.

Dear Masato Sakurai,

Thanks for the extra texts. I great appreciate you finding these as it gives some variants and gives me the tune for the song.

Sincerely,

I heard this at the University of Idaho about 1948. But they sang "stylish stout" instead of "fat."

I have a new e-mail address, it is cococats32@verizon.net - did you get the song I sent you? "There Are No Chi Omegas at Purdue"? if so let me know.

I also have some military pictures that I have found, if you still want one.

Since I haven't heard from you I feel that I have lost touch.

best regards,

John

Well look at Hanna,
She's got a man-a
She's losing weight all around her fann-a;
She's getting nifty
She's lost one-fifty
And now I say it's hard to keep the boys away
From my Hanna
My Delta Gamma
Oh how I long to tell her that I love her so, so, so-so-so.
I don't care for pretty faces, I just long for Hanna's graces,
HANNA! My Delta Gamma!

With a D and an E and an LTA, well well well Hanna, my Delta Gamma. (Repeat)

I was a member the first pledges class at Florida State University. Gamma Mu Chapter
Fall of 1951.
Of course, Hannah was one of our favorites.
I was just now visiting my past and Hannah popped into my mind.
Now I can''t get it out of my mind. Don't want to.

My mother taught us this version:

Oh ho ho Hanna, my Delta Gamma,
She's got a figure like a baby grand piana.
She ain't so nifty, she weighs two-fifty,
But fat girls now and then are relished by the best of men oh ho ho

Hanna, my Delta Gamma,
I'll put my arms around as far as they will go-oh-oh.
I don't care 'bout the Gamma Phi Betas,
I don't care 'bout the Kappa Alpha Thetas,
Hanna, my Delta G!!!!

I was so glad to find the lyrics to Hanna My Delta Gamma.   Thank you for sharing.   My father used to sing it to me when I was a little girl.   His lyrics were slightly different -   his version had "Fat girls are prized by the very best of men" for example - but it is definitely the same song, and I used to sing it to my kids as I put them to bed.   Dad would have learned it at University of Kansas in the 1940's.    I am glad you are preserving it.

Thank you

FRATERNITY

Oh, Oh, Oh, Hanna,
My Delta Gamma,
She's got a shape just like a
        baby grand piano.
She's not so nifty.
She weighs two-fifty,
But al the fattest girls are
        relished by the best of
        men.
So, oh, oh, oh, Hanna,
My Delta Gamma,
I'll put my arms around you
as far as they will go, go,
        go, go, go.
I don't want no mashed potatoes,
Alls I wants a hot tomato,
Hanna!
My delta Gamma, Gamma
        Gamma, Gamma, Theta.
Rah, what, rah, what rah!

I can't find any reference to a "Hannah from Indiana" except a 1951
copyright by Frank Kenneth Gillis & Letha Mae Gillis under
"unpublished music".
