Subject: Who is Sharon Fountain? From: Sooz Date: 19 Oct 04 - 11:20 AM Harvested from the thread drift in the Kate Rusby thread.... Sharon is a teacher from Barnsley who sings traditional, excellent self-penned and contemporary material. Check out her version of Jethro Tull's "Heavy Horses"! |

Subject: RE: Who is Sharon Fountain? From: asirovedout Date: 19 Oct 04 - 12:24 PM Sharon was the first singer to really impress me when I got back into folk clubs nine years ago. Even if she didn't write the song, she makes you believe it happened to her. You can't do much more with a song than that. |

Subject: RE: Who is Sharon Fountain? From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 19 Oct 04 - 12:37 PM Sharon's another greatly talented artiste who deserves far greater recognition. She writes great songs which can be moving, exciting, funny, sad, and she performs other writers' and traditional songs superbly. Try 'Death Of A Salesman' from the 'Sharon' Album - it's a killer! Subject: RE: Who is Sharon Fountain? From: MoorleyMan Date: 19 Oct 04 - 01:38 PM Right on, Johnny! Sharon's been one of my faves for ages, so much deserving of greater recognition. If she had a higher profile she could be massive (if you see wot I mean). Wish she'd get around to that elusive "next CD" (sort of promised around three years back), "Songs" was great! If you ever get the chance to see her live, grab it - she's got a presence and a half, and all the charm to go with it, one of the true unsung stars of the folk scene. |

Subject: RE: Who is Sharon Fountain? From: LesB Date: 19 Oct 04 - 02:48 PM forthded!! That one with the allegories about a boat captain, 'Point of Refuge' I think it's called. It makes the hair stand up on my neck everytime I hear her sing it. She's usually at Moor & Coast. By the way has anybody heard anything about next years event? They usually have the flyers out by now. Les |

Subject: RE: Who is Sharon Fountain? From: GUEST,Raggytash Date: 20 Oct 04 - 07:18 AM So we're all agreed that Sharon is a superb performer, so why doesn't Mrs Harding kid play any of her songs on his show. Perhaps (one can always live in hope) if we all email mike.harding@bbc.co.uk and pester him he will give her some air time and give a shout for The Duncan McFarlane Band whilst you're about it. I've emailed the show three times when they advertise their "request show" and to date haven't heard Dunc. However if enough people do so we may get a result I work on the theory if you brush a glass against a bar top you will eventually wear a hole in it, the question being which brushing causes the hole, the answer being they all do. So if we email enough eventually we will get to hear these two fine perfomers get some greater exposure |

Subject: RE: Who is Sharon Fountain? From: GUEST,Henryp Date: 20 Oct 04 - 08:07 AM Buchan is bonny...but Sharon has a strange first line for Annachie Gordon. |
|
Subject: RE: Who is Sharon Fountain? From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 20 Oct 04 - 08:13 AM there was some debate in a Mudcat thread about the first line Henryp. Seems as though 'Buchan' (which I use) or 'Our King', (which Sharon uses) can be Bonny interchangeably, if I understood it correctly. |

Subject: RE: Who is Sharon Fountain? From: Dave Hanson Date: 20 Oct 04 - 08:20 AM Raggy you ought to know by now Mike only plays requests if they are on his favourite list, and Mike likes very young female singers with squeaky voices, Sharon is far too good a singer. eric |

Subject: RE: Who is Sharon Fountain? From: GUEST,Davy Date: 20 Oct 04 - 11:11 AM Bout time someone blew Sharon's trumpet! She doesn't do it enough. Any song you like, though Annachie is my favourite. She can handle a ropey audience too, with her subtle Barnsley charm. |

Subject: RE: Who is Sharon Fountain? From: Red and White Rabbit Date: 20 Oct 04 - 11:21 AM Hot sure why you would want to wear a hole in the bar Raggy where would you put your pint/ Is Sharon going to have your babies too? |
|
Subject: RE: Who is Sharon Fountain? From: GUEST,Fingerpickjim Date: 20 Oct 04 - 11:28 AM Subtle Barnsley charm? - Interesting concept. I agree Sharon ought to have her own website - but meanwhile the only reference seems to be: Sharon Fountain Singer/ songwriter/ guitarist. Traditional and contemporary material. Subject: RE: Who is Sharon Fountain? From: GUEST,Raggytash Date: 20 Oct 04 - 11:30 AM Rabbit my little child bearing bunny girl, it's an analogy that every time we do something it has an impact, even if that impact isn't measurable or obvious, thus if we all bombard Mrs Harding Kid with emails it just might cause him to reflect and eventually play some tracks from performers other than his restricted play list at the moment As for Sharon having my babies we haven't discussed it ....... yet, but I'm sure that like you she would relish the opportunity |

Subject: RE: Who is Sharon Fountain? From: Ned Ludd Date: 20 Oct 04 - 05:01 PM Sharon could charm the birds from the trees.... but they wouldn't dare mess her about! Got all the tapes and cds. big fan! |

Subject: RE: Who is Sharon Fountain? From: GUEST,Sharon Fountain Date: 30 Oct 04 - 11:26 AM This is amazing - no wonder my ears have been burning for the last week or so! (and I thought I had some funny '-itis') and in what I am told is typical Barnsley fashion (!) I was so gobsmacked I nearly dropped my chips...(not quite, but nearly! - only joking!) The new CD is still underway - the musicians are being consulted at the moment - just really busy trying to juggle stuff around and still find a bit of time for the music. Nice to see you're not discussing whether I was dead or not - I do worry sometimes! I am a HUGE fan of Kate - her music wakes me every morning on my bedside CD player - good luck to her I say - "not many foo-rks from r'arnd 'ere mek it!" - and with that appalling attempt at typing in dialect, I shall bid you all a fond adieu... |

Subject: RE: Who is Sharon Fountain? From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 30 Oct 04 - 03:19 PM Hey Sharon - welcome from me too. And thanks again for your excellent arrangement of 'Annachie Gordon' which I 'borrowed' for my contribution to the 'Yellowbellies' CD. Magic stuff. Good to bump into you again at the Gainsborough Festival t'uther week. SJ :0) :0) |

Subject: RE: Who is Sharon Fountain? From: YorkshireYankee Date: 02 Nov 04 - 02:47 PM Just heard/met Sharon Fountain for the first time at the Sheffield Folk Festival, and was much impressed! Love her wonderfully low voice, and her singing & playing were great as well. Then she played 'Point of Refuge'... I'm with you, Les B! The last verse sent shivers down my spine – wow! Next time I know she's playing in/near Sheffield, I'll definitely try to get to it. |
