I've just finished listening to a folk prog here on the radio and Mike Harding mentioned a 20 Cd set being issued from Topic records consisting of English, Irish and Scottish mainly songs, recorded before 1960. It seems that some of the material is from quite well known collectors and has been processed on a computer to remove all the crackles and hiss. there are I believe some 500 songs The set is called Voice of the People and costs as a complete set £250.
If the track I heard tonight is anything to go by it will be well worth the money.
Regards Baz

Go to Musical Traditions for reviews and information on the set. The review page is still under construction, not surprising on such a vast undertaking, but parts of it are up now. A plug for Musical Traditions in general, it is an excellent source of information on folk and old time music.

I got some info on this when I was in London last month. The set is called 'The Voice of the People.' They were not issued at that time but the CDs are: 1)Come let us buy the license - courtship & marriage 2)My ship shall sail the ocean 3)O'er his grave the grass grew green - tragic ballads 4)Farewell, my own dear native land 5)Come all my lads that follow the plough 6)Tonight I'll make you my bride - true & false lovers 7)First I'm going to sing you a ditty - fun & frolics 8)A story I'm just about to tell - events & issues 9)Rig-a-jig - dance music of Southern England 10)Who's that at my bedroom window? - amorous encounters 11)My father's the king of the gypsies 12)We've received orders to sail 13)They ordered their pints of beer and bottles of sherry 14)Troubles they are but few - dance tunes 15)As me and my love sat courting 16)You lazy lot of bone shakers - seasons 17)It fell on a day, a bonny summer day - ballads 18)To catch a fine buck was my delight - hunting & poaching 19)Ranting & reeling - Northern England dance 20)There is a man upon the farm - working songs. There are between 20 - 30 tracks per CD and they seem to be field recordings and early studio sessions.

Also put out very recently, Baz, is 'A Century of Song: a celebration of traditional singers since 1898' by the English Folk Dance & Song Society.

All the best.
