Subject: Captain Cook Festival 2004 From: GUEST,Steve Dawes Date: 27 Oct 04 - 05:53 PM Haven't noticed anyone mentioning this yet, so I will...a bit late in the day, I know, but it's happening this weekend in Whitby (29-31/10/04). Accommodation almost impossible to get as Whitby's full of Goths as well, but if you're within day-trip distance it might be of interest. Check out the Web Site: http://www.captaincookfestival.org.uk/ |

Subject: RE: Captain Cook Festival 2004 From: muppitz Date: 28 Oct 04 - 03:17 AM I'd almost forgotten about that festival, the last time I went, Paul Sirman was being stalked by Landlocked, everywhere he was playing, Landlocked were just after him. He got a bit paranoid, bless him! I think that was about 8 years ago, when most of the events and singarounds were in pubs but I wasn't really old enough to be in them. That seems a while ago now! Subject: RE: Captain Cook Festival 2004 From: Fossil Date: 29 Oct 04 - 04:53 AM Perhaps I could put in a plug for a book - Tony Horowitz's "Into the Blue (Boldly going where Captain Cook has gone before" (ISBN 1 74114 163 X). I bought it in NZ on my last trip and devoured it on the way home. It's the account of how Horowitz and his boozy, rambunctious seafaring friend followed most of Cook's voyages around the Pacific, retracing his steps and recounting what they found remaining of the legend. By turns very funny, very serious and very tragic, it certainly helped me understand the history of Cook and his times a whole lot better. And yes, they did go to Whitby, too... |
